Book excerpt: Leading scientists discuss the most recent physical and experimental results in the physics of Bose-Einstein condensate theory, the theory of nonlinear lattices (including quantum and nonlinear lattices), and nonlinear optics and photonics. Classical and quantum aspects of the dynamics of nonlinear waves are considered. The contributions focus on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and on the quantum nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Recent experimental results on atomic condensates and hydrogen bonded systems are reviewed. Particular attention is given to nonlinear matter waves in periodic potential.

Book excerpt: With the purpose of promoting cooperative research involving the fields of mechanics and pure mathematics, the International Society for the Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics (ISIMM) sponsors a series of Symposia. The ninth in this series (STAMM 94) took place in July 1994 at the University of Lisbon and emphasized the current trends in nonlinear mechanics, phase change problems (in cooperation with the European Science Foundation Scientific Programme on Mathematical Treatment of Free Boundary Problems), non Newtonian fluids, optimization in solid mechanics and numerical methods in continuum mechanics. This book collects a refereed selection of original contributions presented at STAMM 94, covering a large spectrum of current research in the above topics, from nonlinear elasticity to nonlinear fluids, from phase transitions to diffusion phenomena, and from structural optimization and homogenization to numerical schemes.

Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative new approach to interval analysis. Modal Interval Analysis (MIA) is an attempt to go beyond the limitations of classic intervals in terms of their structural, algebraic and logical features. The starting point of MIA is quite simple: It consists in defining a modal interval that attaches a quantifier to a classical interval and in introducing the basic relation of inclusion between modal intervals through the inclusion of the sets of predicates they accept. This modal approach introduces interval extensions of the real continuous functions, identifies equivalences between logical formulas and interval inclusions, and provides the semantic theorems that justify these equivalences, along with guidelines for arriving at these inclusions. Applications of these equivalences in different areas illustrate the obtained results. The book also presents a new interval object: marks, which aspire to be a new form of numerical treatment of errors in measurements and computations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lecture notes as well as some invited papers presented at the Third Winter School in Complex Analysis, Operator Theory and Applications held February 2-5, 2010, in Valencia, Spain. The book is divided into two parts. The first is an extended self-contained version of the mini-courses taught at the School. The papers in this first part are: Notes on real analytic functions and classical operators, by Pawel Domanski; Shining a Hilbertian lamp on the bidisk, by John E. McCarthy; Selected problems in perturbation theory, by Vladimir V. Peller; and Composition operators on Hardy-Orlicz spaces, by Luis Rodriguez-Piazza. The second part consists of several research papers on recent advances in the area and some survey articles of an expository character. The articles in this second part are: Remarks on weighted mixed norm spaces, by O. Blasco; Interpolation subspaces of $L^1$ of a vector measure and norm inequalities for the integration operator, by J.M. Calabuig, J. Rodriguez, and E.A. Sanchez-Perez; On the spectra of algebras of analytic functions, by D. Carando, D. Garcia, M. Maestre, and P. Sevilla-Peris; Holomorphic self-maps of the disk intertwining two linear fractional maps, by M.D. Contreras, S. Diaz-Madrigal, M.J. Martin, and D. Vukotic; ABC-type estimates via Garsia-type norms, by K.M. Dyakonov; and Volterra type operators on Bergman spaces with exponential weights, by J. Pau and J.A. Pelaez. The topics selected for the mini-courses cover several aspects of complex analysis and operator theory that play important roles in understanding connections between different areas that are considered in fashion these days. This part is aimed at graduate students and young researchers. The courses are self-contained, focusing on those aspects that are basic and that can lead the readers to a quick understanding of the theories presented in each topic. They start with the classical results and reach a selection of open problems in each case. The research and survey articles are aimed at young researchers in the area, as well as post-doc and senior researchers interested in complex analysis and operator theory. This book is published in cooperation with Real Sociedad Matematica Espanola.

The 40 full papers and 12 system demonstrations were selected from a total of 88 submissions and include, in their revised versions presented here, the improvements suggested during the meeting. This book also contains a report on the graph-drawing contest held in conjunction with GD '95. Graph drawing is concerned with the problem of visualizing structural information, particularly by constructing geometric representations of abstract graphs and networks. The importance of this area for industrial applications is testified by the large number of people with industrial affiliations, submitting papers and participating in the meeting.

Book excerpt: This volume of selected academic papers demonstrates the significance of the contribution to mathematics made by Manfredo P. do Carmo. Twice a Guggenheim Fellow and the winner of many prestigious national and international awards, the professor at the institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro is well known as the author of influential textbooks such as Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces. The area of differential geometry is the main focus of this selection, though it also contains do Carmo's own commentaries on his life as a scientist as well as assessment of the impact of his researches and a complete list of his publications. Aspects covered in the featured papers include relations between curvature and topology, convexity and rigidity, minimal surfaces, and conformal immersions, among others. Offering more than just a retrospective focus, the volume deals with subjects of current interest to researchers, including a paper co-authored with Frank Warner on the convexity of hypersurfaces in space forms. It also presents the basic stability results for minimal surfaces in the Euclidean space obtained by the author and his collaborators. Edited by do Carmo's first student, now a celebrated academic in her own right, this collection pays tribute to one of the most distinguished mathematicians.
