From abstract and conceptual visual interpretations of structures to more traditional architectural renderings, the featured work is divided into thematic chapters, ranging from 'Adapt/Reuse' to 'Clandestine'' 'Mobile'' 'Radical Lifestyle', 'Techno-Sustainable', and 'Worship'. Along with arresting and awe-inspiring illustrated content, every chapter also features an essay exploring its respective themes. Highlighting visions that exist outside of established channels of production and conventions of design, Architectural Inventions showcases a wide scope in concept and vision, fantasy and innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visual, large-format compilation of some the finest architectural drawings from Sir John Soane's extensive collection. Architectural Drawings casts light on the magnificent architectural drawings of neo-classical architect, teacher and collector, Sir John Soane that are otherwise concealed in archives. This book, featuring artworks handpicked from what was probably the first comprehensive collection of architectural drawings in the world, numbering 30,000 at the time of his death in 1837, celebrates a life spent procuring curiosities. The collection encompasses the hands of Montano, Thorpe, Wren, Talman, Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, Gibbs, Kent, Chambers, Adam, Clérisseau, Pêcheux, Wyatt, Playfair, Nash and, of course, Soane himself. The quality of Soane's collection of drawings is scarcely paralleled elsewhere and on account of their fragility, these items are infrequently seen by the public. This innovative book draws together the most exquisite and important works from the collection for the first time, showing the extraordinary connoisseurship of Sir John Soane while also exploring what drove Soane to amass such a collection and the provenance of his various significant acquisitions. This book illustrates the story of Soane as a collector of architectural drawings, but a story which is not normally available to the public, and will provide a sumptuous opportunity to peruse some of the finest architectural drawings in existence.

Book excerpt: The flowering of Gothic architecture depended to a striking extent on the use of drawing as a tool of design. By drawing precise "blueprints" with simple tools such as the compass and straightedge, Gothic draftsmen were able to develop a linearized architecture of unprecedented complexity and sophistication. Examination of their surviving drawings can provide valuable and remarkably intimate information about the Gothic design process. Gothic drawings include compass pricks, uninked construction lines, and other telltale traces of the draftsman's geometrically based working method. The proportions of the drawings, moreover, are those actually intended by the designer, uncompromised by errors introduced in the construction process. All of these features make these drawings ideal subjects for the study of Gothic design practice, but their geometry has to date received little systematic attention. This book offers a new perspective on Gothic architectural creativity. It shows, in a series of rigorous geometrical case studies, how Gothic design evolved over time, in two senses: in the hours of the draftsman's labor, and across the centuries of the late Middle Ages. In each case study, a series of computer graphics show in unprecedented detail how a medieval designer could have developed his architectural concept step by step, using only basic geometrical operations. Taken together, these analyses demonstrate both remarkable methodological continuity across the Gothic era, and the progressive development of new and sophisticated permutations on venerable design themes. This rich tradition ultimately gave way in the Renaissance not because of any inherent problem with Gothic architecture, but because the visual language of Classicism appealed more directly to the pretensions of Humanist princes than the more abstract geometrical order of Gothic design, as the book's final chapter demonstrates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture has always been the faithful mirror of society's most important transformations. By the same token, modern architecture, which has broken away from established trends and has a wealth of technology at its disposal, affirms new values that cater to the psychological and spiritual progress of humanity. This innovative work's timeline starts with the end of World War II and the ensuing rift in international architecture and urban planning. Through highly informative images, the book conveys the new representative languages of the postwar era, with its need for reconstruction and its quest for a new monumentality, and examines the new trends that emerged up to the beginning of the 21st century. Photography has been used as an extraordinary medium to explore this new world of architecture, with its ethereal and sometimes colossal forms that are utterly rational and surprisingly well balanced. Essays written by experts, accompanied by high-quality photographs that perfectly capture the multifaceted spirit of modern architecture, illustrate the complex tapestry of the international movements of the 20th century, from technological expressiveness to a new modernity, investigating meg-astructures, advanced technology, postmodernism, minimalism and deconstructionism. Sprawling museums and hyperfunctional airports, enormous shopping centers and futuristic libraries, sports arenas and immense university complexes are presented - along with their brilliant creators - on this surprising journey through forms, materials, colors, ideas and symbols. The outcome is an uncommon portrait of our world and the way architecture interprets it. Book excerpt: "The age of multimedia constitutes a great challenge for libraries as they have to reinvent themselves to meet the constantly growing demands of digital applications. As a result, within the past decade, libraries have evolved from introverted hoards of knowledge to globally networked information and communication hubs. The architectural implementation of this transformation process has resulted in sophisticated buildings that succeed in combining impressive architecture with the complex contemporary requirements. The new edition of 'Masterpieces: Library Architecture + Design' shows that this process of transformation is far from over. Whether new building, conversion or extension, it presents new masterpieces of library design from around the world. The successful combination of contemporary architecture and cutting-edge technology is evidence that in the digital age, this type of building is as topical as never before."--Web page for this work.
