Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume tells the story of some of the paintings rescued by the the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) organization, the so-called "Monuments Men." In December 1945, 202 paintings, found in German salt mines 2,100 feet underground, where they had been hidden to escape the allied bombing of Berlin, were brought to the United States "for safe keeping" by the Department of the Army. They were exhibited in 1948 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, before some of them were sent on a whistle-stop tour of 13 US cities, despite furious opposition from museum directors, Gallery staff, the public, government officials, and a resolution from 98 leading art authorities demanding the immediate return of the works to Germany. All the paintings, examples of Flemish, Dutch, German, French, English, and Italian Schools, were from museums in Berlin, and had been found in April 1945, along with 100 tons of Reichsbank gold, by the special team of art historians and experts, seconded in the US army, and charged with locating and restituting works of art looted by the Nazis. This book is the first to consider the paintings themselves; it features 22 artworks that were in the original NGA exhibition, including four paintings on loan from Berlin, augmented by others from Cincinnati Art Museum, National Gallery of Art, Washington, The Getty Museum, Miami University (Oxford, OH), and the Taft Museum.

Book excerpt: Home to five museums, including the Old and New Museums, the Old National Gallery, the Bode Museum, and the Pergamon Museum, Berlin's Museum Island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 and represents nearly two hundred years of museum history. In this new book, renowned experts on Museum Island take readers on a fascinating tour of the history and architecture of the museums located there, as well as their collections. The Essays included here focus on features and artworks of particular interest and are richly illustrated with both current and historical photographs. Broadening the scope, the book also includes discussions of the surrounding urban development, conservation efforts associated with the museums, and the ongoing redesign of Museum Island, which includes plans for expansion and the Archaeological Promenade. Museum Island is notable in that it illustrates the evolution of modern museum design throughout the twentieth century. For those interested in art, architecture, or conservation--or those hoping to visit--this book offers a comprehensive guide to the five museums and their masterpieces.

Five museums were built on this site between 1824 and 1930 to house archaeological treasures and art collections. The last of the five to be built was the Pergamon Museum, which was designed by Alfred Messel and houses spectacular works of architectural antiquities, including collections of Assyrian, Far Eastern, Greek and Islamic art. Highlights include the Pergamon Altar, with a 394 foot frieze, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate from Babylon.

Book excerpt: "The royal art collection in Berlin had its beginnings in the seventeenth century under the Great Elector, Frederick William I of Brandenburg. From that time on, it grew steadily until, together with the works exhibited publicly from 1830 in the museum at the Lustgarten, and from 1904 at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, it achieved a place among the foremost collections in the world. ... The cream of the collection (which since the Second World War has been divided between East and West Berlin) is now displayed in the museum in the western suburb of Dahlem. Rüdige Klessmann, who was assistant and Curator of Paintings at the Dahlem Museum from 1957 to 1970, provides in this book a complete account of the Gallery's history and development. A representation selection of ninety outstanding works is illustrated in color, and each is accompanied by detailed notes. These, together with well over a hundred black-and-white illustrations, give a vivid impression of the full extent and quality of the five hundred paintings that hang today in the West Berlin's Dahlem Museum." - back cover.
