Book excerpt: U.S. Army leaders acknowledge the importance of the Human Domain, and it is therefore in the Army's best interest to retain the capabilities and knowledge built over the past 12 years. Failure to maintain these capabilities will inevitably mean redeveloping them during the next conflict at the cost of national treasure, e.g. American lives and dollars. Historically, the Army's improvements in process and technique draw directly from lessons learned in conflict. However, there is value in looking at empirical research drawn from fields with relevant parallels to practices used by influence operators. Within academia, there exists a vast amount of research on techniques and procedures influence operators can utilize. This study sought to identify how Army influence operators can benefit from outside institutions, and not rely solely on our experiences to further our capabilities. Therefore, this paper looked at what mass communication, advertising, and marketing research influence operators can adapt and implement at the strategic and operational levels of war. As a result, this study identified four reinforcing takeaways from the academic literature and two distinct recommendations for implementation, an additional step in the doctrinal process and training for our influence operators in communication strategy design that better supports the military campaign.

Book excerpt: The United States has struggled to define its approach to what has been called the "information battlefield" since the information era began. Yet with the outbreak of the war on terror, the United States has been violently challenged to take a position and react to the militants' use of emerging information technology. Ideological demigods operating against the United States now have unprecedented channels by which to disseminate their message to those targets who are uncertain, sympathetic, or actively supportive of their philosophy. From the caves of southeastern Afghanistan to the streets of Baghdad, "the message" has dominated the thinking of those who perpetrate horrific acts of violence, whether in the name of ideology, ethnic and sectarian partisanship, or religion. This anthology is divided into four sections: geopolitical, strategic, operational, and tactical. The geopolitical perspective covers world politics, diplomacy, and the elements of national power, excluding military force. The strategic view examines where the violence has begun and the military element of power. The operational perspective handles the campaigns to accomplish a specific purpose on the world stage--for example, as in the Iraq campaign. The tactical level takes the individual's role into account. Because the nexus of information conflict is most easily seen in the world's contemporary violent confrontations, this anthology reflects the experience and lessons learned by military personnel who have managed these difficult issues. With a foreword by Colonel H. R. McMaster, U.S. Army, the author of Dereliction of Duty: Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam.

Only two of the contributions are directly related to questions of terrorism and the media, with one discussing mass-mediated violence as a form of terrorism and the other exploring the social control role of mass media after September 11th. The others examine such issues as the media companies and policies in Europe and Asia, the globalization of the public relations industry, transnational media management structures, the transformation and structural changes in the advertising industry, and the terminology of media consumed by the democratic globalization movement.

Book excerpt: "This paper attempts to address a perceived gap in UK defence thinking which currently has little documentation on the emerging and cross governmental art of Strategic Communication. After defining the term, this paper attempts to locate its utility within the defence community, considering its relationship with Media and Information Operations. The paper notes, that at its core, Strategic Communication can only be successful when three processes are clearly understood: the role of strategic communication in campaigning, the actual cognitive process of communication and the empirical analysis of target audiences. The dangers of over-reliance upon polling are considered concurrently. The paper concludes with the place of Strategic Communication withinUK military operations, the need for robust measurements of effectiveness and a short assessment of the challenges of emergening and new media"--P. Book excerpt: In writing the second edition of Introduction to Mass Communication, we continue the main thrust found in the first edition. We have attempted to analyze the mass communication empires on their own terms, to recognize them for what they are--large, sometimes monolithic industries established to earn a profit as well as to serve the interests of their customers. The media are studied here within the broad contexts in which they operate. Technological, economic, political, philosophical, and sociological factors are considered throughout.

Book excerpt: A provocative and eye-opening study of the essential role the US military and the Central Intelligence Agency played in the advancement of communication studies during the Cold War era, now with a new introduction by Robert W. McChesney and a new preface by the author Since the mid-twentieth century, the great advances in our knowledge about the most effective methods of mass communication and persuasion have been visible in a wide range of professional fields, including journalism, marketing, public relations, interrogation, and public opinion studies. However, the birth of the modern science of mass communication had surprising and somewhat troubling midwives: the military and covert intelligence arms of the US government. In this fascinating study, author Christopher Simpson uses long-classified documents from the Pentagon, the CIA, and other national security agencies to demonstrate how this seemingly benign social science grew directly out of secret government-funded research into psychological warfare. It reveals that many of the most respected pioneers in the field of communication science were knowingly complicit in America’s Cold War efforts, regardless of their personal politics or individual moralities, and that their findings on mass communication were eventually employed for the purposes of propaganda, subversion, intimidation, and counterinsurgency. An important, thought-provoking work, Science of Coercion shines a blazing light into a hitherto remote and shadowy corner of Cold War history.
