Book Synopsis The Latin Masks of Ezra Pound by : Ronald Edward Thomas
Download or read book The Latin Masks of Ezra Pound written by Ronald Edward Thomas and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : UMI Research Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you've read Kenner's The Pound Era and some psychological criticism, you will probably be able to imagine what a book written in the tradition of Kenner, interpreting the poetry as a series of 'Masks' based on separate Roman poets, all in the attempt to rewrite history in Classical rather than Romantic terms, reads like. Maybe you can't imagine it. That's fair. Anyway, the book has some really good insights, and while it can be tough reading at times, will help your understanding and appreciation of Pound's genius, if not of his person. The 'Ovid' section is where the interpretation really hits its stride, and as a whole the book is a good strong lens through which to view Pound, whose great failure, Thomas argues, is his lack of charity."--Goodreads

Download or read book The Cambridge Introduction to Ezra Pound written by Ira B. Nadel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ezra Pound is one of the most visible and influential poets of the twentieth century. He is also one of the most complex, his poetry containing historical and mythical allusions, experiments of form and style and often controversial political views. Yet Pound's life and work continue to fascinate. This Introduction, first published in 2005, is designed to help students reading Pound for the first time. Pound scholar Ira B. Nadel provides a guide to the rich webs of allusion and stylistic borrowings and innovations in Pound's writing. He offers a clear overview of Pound's life, works, contexts and reception history and his multidimensional career as a poet, translator, critic, editor, anthologist and impresario, a career that placed him at the heart of literary modernism. This invaluable and accessible introduction explains the huge contribution Pound made to the development of modernism in the early twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Language, Sexuality, and Ideology in Ezra Pound's Cantos by : Jean-Michel Rabate
Download or read book Language, Sexuality, and Ideology in Ezra Pound's Cantos written by Jean-Michel Rabate and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ezra Pound's Cantos remains among the most influential and difficult of twentieth century poetic writings. But now, for the first time, Rabaté's powerful and original study presents a theory of reading adequate to the challenge of Pound's writing. Using elements from Lacanian psycho-analysis and Heidegger's powerful meditation of poetry and language, this book constructs a theory of reading which both gives full force to the strategies of writing deployed in the Cantos and to the historical and political situations to which those strategies are a response. This study provides a fresh reading of the familiar Pound canon: Homer, Dante, Ovid but also of the less well-known: Ruskin, Browning, Frobenius. Pound's practice of quotation is understood in the context of a new poetic discourse characterized by parapraxis, ellipsis, condensation and autonomous "voices" which refer the division of the speaking subject back to an "omniform" intellect capable of taking on any new personality at will. Crucial to an understanding of Pound's situation is the relationship between Chinese and Greek culture, an analysis of which allows Rabaté to elaborate the tragic dimension in Pound's life and works. This book also parallels and contrasts Pound with his major contemporaries such as Eliot and Joyce and with his immediate heirs, like William Carlos Williams, H.D., Zukofsky, and Olson.

Book Synopsis Ezra Pound and Poetic Influence by :
Download or read book Ezra Pound and Poetic Influence written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of twenty essays investigates a series of different aspects of poetic influence in relation to the major modernist poet, Ezra Pound. The volume commences with five essays on matters to do with translation and poetic influence, which situate Ezra Pound as an important transitional figure between 19th-century and 20th-century translation strategies. The next five essays consider different influences on Pound’s poetry, and introduce the reader to new research in a variety of areas, including how specific Chinese cultural artefacts inform his poetry. The following five essays explore Pound’s influence on some of his major contemporaries, such as Eugenio Montale and Charles Olson, and also (through the reading he gave her as a girl) on his daughter, Mary de Rachewiltz. The concluding five essays exemplify different approaches to the thorny issue of Pound and politics, and end with two diametrically opposed interpretations of Pound’s political / poetic thought. The collection will be of great interest to scholars of Ezra Pound and of modern to postmodern poetry; but it will also serve as a useful and lively introduction to some of the debates within Pound scholarship to students coming to his work for the first time.

It starts off with a luci introduction to Pound's technique in general, and to his imagist phase (during which the poems commented on in this book were written) in particular. In the critical passages Mr. Ruthven steers a sage middle course between the attitudes of uncritical adoration and wholesale rejection that mar so much of the literature on Pound. . . . informative without being pedantic, and exhaustive without being long-winded. . . .To turn to Mr. Ruthven's Guide is to follow in the footsteps of an intelligent, sensitive and reliable scholar." --English Studies This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Synopsis A Guide to Ezra Pound's Personae, 1926 by : K. K. Ruthven
Download or read book A Guide to Ezra Pound's Personae, 1926 written by K. K. Ruthven and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1969-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the invention of literary modernism is usually attributed to James Joyce, T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, it was Pound alone who provided (in Hugh Kenner's words) "the synergetic presence") to convert individual experiment into an international movement. In 1926 Pound carefully sculpted his body of shorter poems into a definitive collection which would best show the concentration of force, the economy of means, and the habit of analysis that were, to him, the hallmarks of the new style. This collection, where Pound presented himself in a variety of characters or "masks," was called Personae. In 1926, Personae's publication gave solidity to a movement today the work stands as one of the classic texts of the twentieth century.
