Masked Atheism: Catholicism and the Secular Victorian Home by Maria LaMonaca begins with the assumption that anti-Catholicism reveals far more about the Victorians than simple theological disagreements or religious prejudice. An analysis of anti-Catholicism exposes a host of anxieties, contradictions, and controversies dividing Great Britain, the world's most powerful nation by the mid-nineteenth century. Noting that Catholicism was frequently caricatured by the Victorians as "masked atheism"--that is, heathenism and paganism masquerading as legitimate Christianity--LaMonaca's study suggests that much anti-Catholic rhetoric in Victorian England was fueled by fears of encroaching secularism and anxieties about the disappearance of God in the modern world. For both male and female writers, Catholicism became a synonym for larger, "ungodly" forces threatening traditional ways of life: industrialization, rising standards of living, and religious skepticism. LaMonaca situates texts by Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, Christina Rossetti, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Michael Field, and others against a rich background of discourses about the growing visibility of Anglo and Roman Catholicism in Victorian England. In so doing, she demonstrates the influence of both pro- and anti-Catholic sentiment on constructs of Victorian domesticity, and explores how writers appropriated elements of Catholicism to voice anxieties about the growing secularization of the domestic sphere: a bold challenge to sentimental notions of the home as a "sacred" space. Masked Atheism will contribute a fresh perspective to an ongoing conversation about the significance of Catholicism in Victorian literature and culture.

As this volume shows, it was at work not just during the Enlightenment, but within a much wider periodical framework: the Reformation, the rise of the Puritan movement, the conflict over the Stuart state and church, the English Revolution, and the formation of key American colonies in the eighteenth century. Advocates of Civil Religion tried to reconcile a national church with religious toleration and design a constitution capable of preventing the church from interfering with affairs of state. The volume investigates the idea of Civil Religion in the works of canonical thinkers in the history of political thought (Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau), in the works of those who have been recognized as shaping political ideas (Hooker, Prynne et al.) during this period, and in the advocacy of those perhaps not previously associated with Civil Religion (William Penn). Although Civil Religion was often posited as a pragmatic solution to constitutional and ecclesiological problems created by the Reformation and the English Revolution, they also reveal that such pragmatism was not at odds with religious conviction or ideals. Civil Religion certainly enhanced citizenship in this period, but it did so in ways which depended on the truth claims of Protestantism, not on their domestication to politics.

This concreteness is the true universal. The “double negation”, “The Orthodox Hegel”, shows how the Christian movement, obliged by its own momentum to recognise its spiritual identity with the thought called, metonymously, “Hegelian”, is Spirit itself impelling. As standing for, even incorporating this movement, as Aristotle once had incorporated philosophy for some, Hegel instances that concrete particularity determining religion towards its ideal of universality in an individual, the spirit “poured out” upon “all flesh” but on a given “day”. It originates in “prophecy” as philosophy originates in religion and art, the three “forms of absolute spirit” (Hegel) perfected in philosophy, the third, which “the absolute religion” must, consequently, elicit. After indexing this project, themes of logic, subject and predicate, meaning and identity in difference are developed. Philosophy and absolute idealism are identified, thus capturing the latter for orthodoxy. The primacy of mediated thought over immediate observation emerges as the first condition for science and spiritual self-consciousness generally. In later chapters, the thought rises to properly theologico-metaphysical themes, such as Rinaldi’s critique of the Hegelians, Kenneth Foldes and Richard Winfield. Trinity, incarnation, immortality, infinity, and the absolute are all discussed, along with revelation, the idea. A postscript relates the work to contrary attitudes among some orthodox thinkers, falling short of, or denying the rights and duties of, a specifically speculative reason. The title intends no reference to any recent work denying the orthodoxy of Hegel or, rather, the Hegelian character of orthodoxy.
