Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1972, the Brandywine Workshop has become an internationally recognized center for printmaking and a vital part of the Philadelphia community. In 2009 the workshop donated one hundred prints to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in memory of its late director Anne d'Harnoncourt. Full Spectrum celebrates this generous gift and documents and contextualizes the workshop's achievements over its distinguished forty-year history. All one hundred prints by the eighty-nine artists represented in the gift--including John Biggers, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Joyce de Guatemala, Sam Gilliam, Mei-Ling Hom, Jacob Landau, Kenneth Noland, Betye and Alison Saar, and Kay Walkingstick--are beautifully reproduced. Cultural identity, political and social issues, portraiture, landscape, patterning, and pure abstraction are some of the many subjects explored in these works, underscoring the breadth of the workshop's conceptual and stylistic reach. And plead for the many here upon whom light is beginning to break, but who shrink from taking up the heavy heavy cross which confession of Christ must bring! We missionaries see something of their struggles and sufferings; perhaps through the medium of my little book you may also be able to form a somewhat better idea of the difficulties and darkness through which converts in Hindustan are now groping their way to the Saviour. Book excerpt: Robert Michael Pyle is the author of twenty books and hundreds of essays, stories, papers, and poems, but it is the occasional prose--the deeply personal essays that explored and indulged his immediate fascinations--that make up this selection of never-before-collected testimonies. Beginning with a 1965 cri de coeur written on mountain motel stationery, Through a Green Lens ranges across broad territory of topic, vehicle, geography, populace, and politics, concluding with powerful forewords for two 2015 books. Pyle's half-century long view, acute and uncommonly attuned to the physical world, gives readers a remarkable window on the natural setting of our life and times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its formation and in a citizenry made up largely of repatriated ex-slaves, Liberia has been the scene of a fascinating intercontinental history. Trans-Atlantic Sojourners enters this history through the experiences of one Americo-Liberian family. M. Neely Young introduces us to two patriarchs, both former slaves--Othello Richards of Rockbridge County, Virginia, and William Coleman of Fayette and Woodford Counties, Kentucky. From their arrival in the new African republic in the 1850s until the overthrow of Americo-Liberian rule in 1980, the family played a key role in the nation's economic affairs, representing the interests of the interior agriculturalists against the merchant elites of Monrovia, and was prominent as well in Liberia's political and cultural arenas. The author traces the family over a number of generations, revealing a course as dramatic as that of the country itself. With the violent upheaval of the 1980s, most of Richards' and Coleman's descendants escaped to America; in the time since, some have recently returned to Liberia. Encompassing the issues of slavery, white and black colonization, the tensions within the Americo-Liberian class, and the Liberian concept of "black republicanism," this family's narrative reflects historical patterns in Liberia and America that resonate to today.
