Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Martin Luther and the Reformation is a comprehensive global study of the life and work of Martin Luther and the movements that followed him—in history and through today. Organized by a stellar advisory board of Luther and Reformation scholars, the encyclopedia features nearly five hundred entries that examine Luther’s life and impact worldwide. The two-volume set provides overviews of basics such as the 95 Theses as well as more complex topics such as reformational distinctions. Entries explore Luther’s contributions to theology, sacraments, his influence on the church and contemporaries, his character, and more. The work also discusses Luther’s controversies and topics such as gender, sexuality, and race. Publishing at the five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation, this is an essential reference work for understanding the Reformation and its legacy today.

Book excerpt: Published in Finland in 1983, Two Kinds of Love is the second of Tuomo Mannermaa's provocative books offering a distinctly different interpretation of Martin Luther's theology. In Two Kinds of Love, Mannermaa unfolds Luther's understanding of love as the key to the reformer's theology of grace. Human love orients toward that which is already "good and beautiful"-and, as such, comes into being only through "the prestige and glory of the loved one." In contrast, God's love is a pure gift of grace, which makes possible our love for God and for one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to Martin Luther's sacramental theology addresses a central question in the life of the church and in ecumenical dialogue. Although Luther famously reduced the sacraments from seven to two (baptism and the Lord's Supper), he didn't completely dismiss the others. Instead, he positively recast them as practices in the church. This book explores the medieval church's understanding of the seven sacraments and the Protestant rationale for keeping or eliminating each sacrament. It also explores implications for contemporary theology and worship, helping Protestants imagine ways of reclaiming lost benefits of the seven sacraments.

First, he contrasts the theological perspectives of earlier biographies with the results of more modern research into Luther's socio-economic context, psychological relationshps, late medieval and humanist thought, university curricula, and political factors. Second, in keeping with his theory that the historical discipline "must make its results accessible to a wider audience" unless it wishes to encourage the "historical amnesia which it so often laments", the author communicates the findings of technical Reformation scholarship to the public in a comprehensible style. -- Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This volume brings together two important contemporary accounts of the life of Martin Luther in a confrontation that had been postponed for more than four hundred and fifty years. The first of these is written after Luther’s death, when it was rumoured that demons had seized the Reformer on his deathbed and dragged him off to Hell. In response to these rumours, Luther’s friend and colleague, Philip Melanchthon wrote and published a brief encomium of the Reformer in 1548. A completely new translation of this text appears in this book. It was in response to Melanchthon’s work that Johannes Cochlaeus completed and published his own monumental life of Luther in 1549, which is translated and made available in English for the first time in this volume. Such is the detail and importance of Cochlaeus’s life of Luther that for an eyewitness account of the Reformation – and the beginnings of the Catholic Counter-Reformation – there is simply no other historical document to compare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther’s collected sermons for the church year were originally called postil or postilla (in German: Postille) which was originally a term for Bible commentaries. It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus" (after these words) referring to Biblical readings. Luther's postil was published in two series: the Church Postil and the House Postil. His published sermons and catechisms were by far his most popular. They did more to teach people the Reformation than any other book. Luther intended his postils to serve common pastors and people, and therefore was one of the greatest educational and devotional books of the Reformation. From the time Martin Luther published the first part in 1521, every annual cycle of sermons on the lessons, whether consisting of homilies or formal sermons, is termed a postil. This unabridged edition of Luther's writings of the works of Martin Luther is an accurate and clear translation. We have Presents the Church Postil as the mature Luther wanted it to be. It includes Luther’s extensive revisions to his own work. For those who are not familiar with the Church calendar year we have elected to number and title each sermon accompanied with a short description of the contents accompanied by the Bible verse. Thus it will look something like this: NO. 1 A KING ARRIVES FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT A Discourse on Christ Coming into Jerusalem TEXT: Matthew 21:1-9. The primary basis for the work is the comprehensive the 1905 translation of Luther's Church Postil by John Nicholas Lenker of which volumes 1-5 were originally published in Minneapolis by Lutherans of All Lands, 1904-1906, and volumes 6-8 were originally published in Minneapolis by The Luther Press, 1908-1908. In 1986 Baker Books reprinted this work. For convenience we have maintained the volume numbers of the more recent Baker Books reprint rather than the original volume numbers. Vol. 1. He bade his followers look up for that sign of God in the heavens which announced their invincibility, pretending to discover it either in a rainbow or a halo round the sun which was visible at the critical moment when the princes advanced to the attack. The peasants were protected by an entrenchment constructed of waggons and other impedimenta, a form of camp as old as the days of Tacitus and Hermann. The artillery of the princes tore a path through this obstacle, and the cavalry charged in upon the main body of the peasants. As they advanced, the peasants attempted to raise the hymn, "Come, Holy Spirit!" But their loose array was broken in a moment, and the battle soon became a massacre. More than half the number of the rebels were slain. Miinzer escaped from the field. His mania was cured, but the foxy cunning which was in the nature of the man survived. He crept into a house, got into bed, and feigned sickness. But he was taken, and most justly condemned to death. The delirium that had possessed him for years subsided, and the religion of his boyhood returned. He took the Sacrament in one kind, and died a Roman Catholic. There are things on which all comment is drowned in tears. Who can express the pathos of that hymn of the peasants, "Come, Holy Spirit!" as the horsemen dashed in upon them? That Miinzer made a poor end must not be held conclusive as impeaching his sincerity. He had a narrow brain to begin with; the agitation of the time intoxicated him; and when the visions of his frenzy vanished he awoke to the consciousness that he had been acting the madman. There was truth, doubtless, in his bitter answer to those who asked him why he had wrought such woe, that the peasants would have their...
