Book excerpt: Mary Sexson and Lylanne Musselman connected quickly and became poetry sisters. This joint book leads the reader down two different paths the authors have walked. As you meander through the pages you will find tears and joy, fear and anticipation, life and death. This book leads you down a self-reflective arc where you will find hope in good times and bad. Despite having traveled very different paths, Mary Sexson and Lylanne Musselman remind us in Marriage Maps and Driven Destinies that the people we journey with profoundly impact our paths and purposes. The poets' talents for imagery and analogy place us in fast cars driving Indiana roads after curfew and sitting in waiting rooms reflecting on mortality-raw and relatable vignettes resonating of hardship, heartache, and tenderness. Poems illustrate how our choices when navigating threats, for better or worse, prepare us to survive and find joy in what might feel routine or mundane. Independence comes from boldly taking the wheel and learning when to stop and ask for directions. Sexson and Musselman's collection explores relationships that shape and bind us: those we cherish and those we must forgive. Liz Whiteacre Author of Hit the Ground and founder of Etchings Press From cancer to cars, love to longing, the collected poems of Marriage Maps and Driven Destinies remind us that wisdom, too, is a journey, not a destination. It is the journey of this book. Sexson's poems speak with a delicate but honest self-examination. Her husband's cancer diagnosis shapes some of her most revealing and insightful poems. Love, fear and grueling uncertainty bring home the ultimate truth of a long marriage. Musselman's robust voice takes us back to the fast cars and AM radio of smalltown Indiana. While they convey a sense of isolation and loneliness, her poems have a humor and humanity that meets life head on. "Not one to fear the dark", she travels the winding roads that ultimately bring her closest to home. Liz Hughes Wiley Poet, educator, and event planner. Wiley planned the memorable tribute to George Hitchcock, famous editor of the poetry journal Kayak

Book excerpt: Two civilizations confront each other on the banks of the River Indus in 7th century India. Their world views could not be more different. One is an ancient civilization with many esoteric rituals and beliefs that have evolved over thousands of years. The other is less than hundred years old with a singular belief in the supremacy of its one true God. One has a glorious past but an uncertain future. The other's future is filled with promise and opportunities. One is polytheistic, and extols pluralism. The other is ardently monotheistic and insists on submission to the one true faith. These world views are irreconcilable and in the 7th century there is only one way to harmonize such disparate viewpoints. War. War is ugly. It is costly. It destroys people's humanity and wrecks vengeance on the innocent. Yet it is also a crucible for change and provides an opportunity for a fresh start. Under its intense pressure a piece of coal can turn into a diamond. The result of this war, will forever alter the history of this subcontinent and inexorably change the lives of two people. On one side of this conflict is a beautiful princess. Her grace, charm, beauty and kindness make her the darling of her kingdom. Her innocent demeanor and spirit of service bring warmth to her subjects hearts. Every prince in the surrounding kingdoms has dreamed of winning her hand in marriage. Yet she has a dark past and pursues an improbable dream. She yearns for a certain kind of soul mate, one who has been foretold to complete her spiritually, a strong dominant stranger who will release her dormant submissiveness so she may fulfill her destiny. She has waited patiently for four years and prayed everyday for him. Riding on the wings of this calamitous war a stranger approaches. Will he fulfill the princess's destiny? Or will he be an usurper who rapes and pillages his way into the forgotten pages of history. Can he temper his dominance with justice and compassion or will power corrupt him completely? Will he see the humanity of "the other" or are they just pawns in his game of domination. Will history recognize him as "The Protector" or despise him as "The Annihilator"?

Download or read book Work Mate Marry Love written by Debora L. Spar and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial guide to life before—and after—Tinder, IVF, and robots. What will happen to our notions of marriage and parenthood as reproductive technologies increasingly allow for newfangled ways of creating babies? What will happen to our understanding of gender as medical advances enable individuals to transition from one set of sexual characteristics to another, or to remain happily perched in between? What will happen to love and sex and romance as our relationships migrate from the real world to the Internet? Can people fall in love with robots? Will they? In short, what will happen to our most basic notions of humanity as we entangle our lives and emotions with the machines we have created? In Work Mate Marry Love, Harvard Business School professor and former Barnard College president Debora L. Spar offers an incisive and provocative account of how technology has transformed our intimate lives in the past, and how it will do so again in the future. Surveying the course of history, she shows how marriage as we understand it resulted from the rise of agriculture, and that the nuclear family emerged with the industrial revolution. In their day, the street light, the car, and later the pill all upended courtship and sex. Now, as we enter an era of artificial intelligence and robots, how will our deepest feelings and attachments evolve? In the past, the prevailing modes of production produced a world dominated by heterosexual, mostly-monogamous, two-parent families. In the future, however, these patterns are almost certain to be reshaped, creating entirely new norms for sex and romance, and for the construction of families and the raising of children. Steering clear of both techno-euphoria and alarmism, Spar offers a bold and inclusive vision of how our lives might be changed for the better.

Book Synopsis Mapping The Faerie Queene by : Wayne Erickson
Download or read book Mapping The Faerie Queene written by Wayne Erickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the Faerie Queene's setting, examining Spenser's quest structures and his ideas about epic, romance, and history. Critics almost invariably treat Spenser's Faeryland as coextensive with the world of the poem, but this is not the case; rather, Faeryland is part of an epic cosmos reaching from heaven and the abode of the classical deities to demonic underground realms. Spenser situates Faeryland within a specific spatial and temporal terrestrial geography in which locations outside Faeryland represent various heroic settings in political history. The politico-historical world built around Faeryland is ripe for analysis by contemporary historicist critics. Spenser uses political geography, in conjunction with the time-inclusive medium of Faeryland, to coordinate several transhistorical quests that create a pattern of temporal mediations among sixth-century British, 16th-century English, and biblical and prophetic versions of history. He juxtaposes chronicle history, empirical historiography, and cultural myth while manipulating genre to create a world capable of accommodating his grand romantic epic design. In mapping the world of The Faerie Queene, the book provides a widened context for Spenser's quest structures, a significant contribution to the study of the poem's relation to history, and a new perspective from which to view Spenser's debts to classical epic, Italian romantic epic, and his native medieval inheritance. Book excerpt: This is an inspirational book written by a man who spent over thirty years of his life drinking and drugging, after two intense inpatient rehabs, twenty-eight arrests, nine felony convictions, and a five-year prison sentence. The only thing that changed was the amount of party money that was available, had increased, and the disease had gotten worse than ever. Then on the thirtieth day of a thirty-five-day jail sentence, God inspired him to write this book. His life has now changed forever. No more drinking and no more drugs, he is now high on life, happier than heÊs ever been, and for once in his life, totally stable. Dozens and dozens of unbelievable events have taken place, way too ironic to be coincidental. It is all miracles performed by God himself, a perfectly mapped-out plan, totally created by the Master, to change this manÊs life so that he could become a minister and show the world that there is a cure to addictions. Download or read book Destiny written by Kerrine E. Peck and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Destiny is about two different cultures. It deals with love, loss, and fate and is a young adult romance novel that will appeal to everyone: fantasy readers, hopeless romantics, as well as those who enjoy a good story and a happy ending. It is not just a romance or a problem novel but explores the issues of racism and family loyalty in these two different angles. The story is set in the summer of 1989 on an island in the Caribbean. It talks about two main characters: Sheena Becker, a young woman in her twenties who, like many, dreams of something that is very difficult to have because of cultural differences, and Jonathan Samson, aged twenty-nine, who comes from one of the wealthiest business families in Seattle. He has a very tough relationship with his father who has a strong and powerful character, giving orders to his son that drains him. The two protagonists are brought together, and their forbidden relationship begins to blossom, but because of their relationship, the circumstances of culture begin to tear them apart where their lives were changed forever. There is a conflict between the two families that are so deep, but at the end, their loves wins all.
Download or read book A Body of Fates written by Kenneth Evren and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 31st, 1999 history changed. Precisely at midnight. David Becker was born into abuse and left home young. Rescued by Deborah Glasscock, a natural-born leader from three generations of extraordinary women, they married in 1998. With the first tick of Saturday January 1st, 2000 the course of their lives was forever altered and time-travelling consequences began to manifest. The peculiar lives of their predecessors, the epigenetics of a war-torn, alcohol-soaked ancestry, and entangled events from previous life-changing Saturdays somehow connect through cause and effect to an ominous diagnosis hanging over their now young family. Rational explanations fail leading Dave into the mirrored funhouse of consciousness, beliefs and free will. Fearing an inescapable destiny, as his family is daily ravaged, Dave encounters his own personal Fate, a being he becomes convinced is real. She torments his dreams, whispering malign revelations. It’s all beyond your control. Your family’s survival depends on your choices and the future hidden within them. You are no more than a self-aware bag of meat. Perhaps you’re hearing voices David? Witty, quirky, surreal and tender Evren retells the Greek myth of the Fates as an if only story of regret and redemption, sex and power, the old animus of science and religion, the endurance of suffering, and the resilience of family.

But the role that sex played has largely been unexplored by scholars. This is the first book-length study to examine such topics as Thomas Jefferson's interest in the sex lives of American Indians, white's fear of Indians raping white women, Christian missionary beliefs that Native American sexual practices needed to be altered in order to save Indian souls, and the desire of Mormons to practice polygamy. These and other sex-related dynamics all combined to play a role in America's extension from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
