Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage for convenience is not new under the sun. Movie stars, politicians, military members, immigrants have used it as a tool to achieve their goals. Think of it, and then ask yourself: Am I in a marriage for convenience, or do I know anyone in this situation? The answer could be stunning. Remember any marriage not based on love or a relationship is considered as marriage for convenience. Arranged marriages are still existed in our society as well as abroad and will continue to immerge as long as the grooms and brides are under the influence of their parents in part or as long as singles are surfing the Internet. On the other hand, marriage by verdict is unique, and for some odd reasons we tend to avoid it. The characters demonstrated all three types of marriages mentioned above. Stephanys first marriage is no doubt a marriage based on love. Annette and Hugues had their meeting arranged, and finally Christopher utilized the court system to enter the matrimony with his feisty fiance Stephany. As entertaining my book may be, be mindful that if a loved one or a significant other helps you reach your goal in life, you should be thankful to that person. That person put all his or her faith on you to become somebody; rise up with that person, dont just dismiss that person, make him or her your partner in life. Should you separate from that person, dont diminish him or her because you become the fruit of that persons labor. Always play fair. Be thankful

Book excerpt: An examination of how the U.S. court system has shaped the boundaries of a central building block of American society from the colonial era to the present day. Marriage on Trial: A Handbook with Cases, Laws, and Documents explores the evolution of marriage, a seemingly static institution that, in reality, has been dramatically redefined over time. An illuminating introduction tracing the reasons for ongoing controversies leads to a historical overview of the ways in which marriage has evolved, with a particular emphasis on women, racial minorities, polygamists, and homosexuals. A review of significant court cases that represent key arguments regarding marriage—legal identity of women, polygamy, interracial marriage, rights of unmarried couples, and same-sex marriages—illustrates how the legal system has shifted with the changing mores of society. Will Americans ever tolerate polygamy? Will gay marriages be legally recognized? Scenarios of these and other possibilities for the future suggest that more change is in store.

Book excerpt: "Tells the story of a watershed trial that unfolded over twelve tense days in California in 2010. A trial that legalized same-sex marriage in our most populous state. A trial that interrogated the nature of marriage, the political status of gays and lesbians, the ideal circumstances for raising children, and the ability of direct democracy to protect fundamental rights. A trial that stands as the most potent argument for marriage equality this nation has ever seen. In telling the story of Hollingsworth v. Perry, the groundbreaking federal lawsuit against Proposition 8, Kenji Yoshino has also written a paean to the vanishing civil trial--an oasis of rationality in what is often a decidedly uncivil debate"--Dust jacket flap.

Book excerpt: The fascinating and very moving story of the lovers, lawyers, judges and activists behind the groundbreaking Supreme Court case that led to one of the most important, national civil rights victories in decades—the legalization of same-sex marriage. In June 2015, the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage the law in all fifty states in a decision as groundbreaking as Roe v Wade and Brown v Board of Education. Through insider accounts and access to key players, this definitive account reveals the dramatic and previously unreported events behind Obergefell v Hodges and the lives at its center. This is a story of law and love—and a promise made to a dying man who wanted to know how he would be remembered. Twenty years ago, Jim Obergefell and John Arthur fell in love in Cincinnati, Ohio, a place where gays were routinely picked up by police and fired from their jobs. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government had to provide married gay couples all the benefits offered to straight couples. Jim and John—who was dying from ALS—flew to Maryland, where same-sex marriage was legal. But back home, Ohio refused to recognize their union, or even list Jim’s name on John’s death certificate. Then they met Al Gerhardstein, a courageous attorney who had spent nearly three decades advocating for civil rights and who now saw an opening for the cause that few others had before him. This forceful and deeply affecting narrative—Part Erin Brockovich, part Milk, part Still Alice—chronicles how this grieving man and his lawyer, against overwhelming odds, introduced the most important gay rights case in U.S. history. It is an urgent and unforgettable account that will inspire readers for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Same-sex marriage has become one of the defining social issues in contemporary U.S. politics. State court decisions finding in favor of same-sex relationship equality claims have been central to the issue's ascent from nowhere to near the top of the national political agenda. Same Sex Marriage in the United States tells the story of the legal and cultural shift, its backlash, and how it has evolved over the past 15 years. This book aids in a classroom examination of the legal, political, and social developments surrounding the issue of same-sex marriage in the United States. While books about same-sex marriage have proliferated in recent years, few, if any, have provided a clear and comprehensive account of the litigation for same-sex marriage, and its successes and failures, as this book does. Updated through 2013, this edition details the watershed rulings in favor of same-sex marriage: the Supreme Court's June 26th repeal of DOMA, and of Proposition 8 in California, as well as the many states (New Jersey, Illinois, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Nevada among others) where activists and public leaders have made recent strides to ensure that gay couples have an equal right to marry.
