Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's Land: And Other Recent Verses In the mid land was born a real man, Who out of penury and plainest toil Grew on to his great manhood. Child and boy, He knew the lessons of adversity, The frugal fare, the pioneer's stern task, The lonely longing, those few ragged books That yet his kindling meditation fed And launched his mind upon uncharted seas. His inner life a brooding solitude, With melancholy wondering, he saw No path to what his yearning spirit sought And least of all could guess where he would find An answer to the query of his soul. He stood on the hills and looked over the lovely land of Kentucky. There were deep forests and Open grassy places. Bears and wild turkeys and all kinds of game were in the woods. Great herds of buffalo roamed over the hills. It all looked so peaceful and beautiful that it seemed to be prepared by the hand of God for the use of man. But Indians went on the warpath through those beautiful forests. They lay in wait along the streams with tomahawks ready, for any white men who might come to their favorite hunting ground. The scalps of many brave hunters hung from their belts. One never knew what bush or tree might hide a. Painted savage. There was a man, built of heroic mould, In gaunt strength fashioned, patient, tender, sage: From out the West he came, when years untold Brought on this land the crisis of her age. Upon her scutcheon was a scarlet stain, On her fair name a cloud hung night and day, And who save he, the Union might maintain, And wipe, with tears, her slavery away? They summoned him to free a myriad slaves. What chains, what fear, what grief their bondage wrought N 0 one shall ever know; but soldier's' graves Show what heroic answers to his call were brought! The spirit OF history. And was this needed, all this human life Laid on the altar of the Highest Right? Hark to the story. See if bitter strife Were bitterer than the hunted Slave by night, Were bitterer than the auction block and pen, Were bitterer than the mother torn from child, Or fugitives, one night in poisonous fen, The next, through forests and by rivers wild. As certain shepherds by a Star were led, Obedient to the Heavenly Hosts' command, So the poor Slave, by his star comforted, Followed its guiding light into a freer land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: An Historical Address Then so much depends upon the point of view. In this regard, men are like mountains. A height of land towers over our heads: is it a mountain, splitting the clouds, and joining the earth and the sky; or is it a mere knoll, shutting from our view the real peaks which are just beyond it? In a deep and narrow valley, one has no idea how some mighty peak dominates the whole landscape for miles and miles. But when he gets away upon the other summits, he sees at once how easily it is the master and king of the en tire region. I repeat - so with men. We do not judge the public men of our own time with intelligence even, - let alone fairness and candor. No man, it is said, is a hero to his own valet. The genuine greatness or the essential littleness of those who figure largely in the world's affairs is not clearly perceived in their own times. To illustrate by familiar examples how have the contemporary estimates of Daniel Webster and of Charles Sumner changed since their deaths. You all know how John A. Andrew is reckoned to-day; but in 1862, there was a strong opposition to his re-election, even within his own party, and no less a man than Charles Dev ens was made the candidate of dissatisfied republicans, and of democrats eager to profit by the dissensions of their oppo neuts. At rare intervals, there appears upon the stage of human affairs, a man, whose life and deeds and character compel the attention, the admiration, and the lasting affection of the world. His is one of the few, the immortal names, that were not born to die. Generations come and generations go; but his memory, living and green, does not fade. Parties rise and fall; but his name becomes a household word, dear to the hearts and the lips of his countrymen. Great issues are settled so that the settlements mark clear gains for human progress his fortunes had been married to those great principles and his fame is forever linked with their triumph. His services, too carelessly estimated during his life-time, - his motives, often lightly aspersed by the thoughtless and the ignorant; his relations to progress and truth, so rarely understood by his fellow - citizens, particular ly when they seemed to threaten the triumph of some party or sect, these at last become evident. Then he receives the place in history to which he is entitled; his services, his motives and his various merits bring him again the happy experience of the modest guest, and the muse of history is constantly inviting him to come up higher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Lincoln Early a century has passed since the men and maidens of a quiet Village in Kentucky met to celebrate the wedding day of Thomas Lincoln and his young bride Nancy. The ever - changing line that marks the borders of the West rested then over the territory of Indiana, and a large part of Kentucky was hardly more than a wilderness. Hospitality was the law of the land. The stranger, pausing on his journey for the night, became a guest of honor. The customs of the time were simple; but there was no want of friendliness in the company that gathered around the rude table to wish the bride and bridegroom a long and prosperous life. The table was loaded with the delicacies of the period. Venison, bear - meat, wild turkey and ducks - all that the forest yielded was there in abundance, and what the occasion may have lacked in formality was made up in good cheer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Brilliant . . . Ferguson’s guided tour of the often amusing, sometimes bizarre ways we remember Lincoln today . . . is heartening and even inspiring.” —Bill Kristol, Time Abraham Lincoln was our greatest president and perhaps the most influential American who ever lived. But what is his place in our country today? In Land of Lincoln, Andrew Ferguson packs his bags and embarks on a journey to the heart of contemporary Lincoln Nation, where he encounters a world as funny as it is poignant, and a population as devoted as it is colorful. In small-town Indiana, Ferguson drops in on the national conference of Lincoln presenters, 175 grown men who make their living (sort of) by impersonating their hero. He meets the premier collectors of Lincoln memorabilia, prized items of which include Lincoln’s chamber pot, locks of his hair, and pages from a boyhood schoolbook. He takes his wife and children on a trip across the long-defunct Lincoln Heritage Trail, a driving tour of landmarks from Lincoln’s life. This book is an entertaining, unexpected, and big-hearted celebration of Lincoln’s enduring influence on our country—and the people who help keep his spirit alive. “A hilarious, offbeat tour of Lincoln shrines, statues, cabins and museums . . . Mr. Ferguson maps it expertly, with an understated Midwestern sense of humor that Lincoln, master of the funny story, would have been the first to appreciate.” —William Grimes, The New York Times

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Memorial Album-Immortelles Ou the fifteenth day of April, 1880, I was standing near the monument of Abraham Lincoln, waiting for the Lincoln Guard of Honor to begin their first memorial service 011 the fifteenth anniversary of the death of Abraham Lincoln. The gathering was a small one, it being only about twenty-two minutes after seven o'clock in the morning. As I gazed on the pinnacle of the towering shaft, that marks the resting-place of him whom I had learned to love in my boyhood's years, when, in the spirited campaign of 1860, Old Abe was the watchword of every Republican, I fell to wondering whether it might not be possible for me to contribute my mite toward adding luster to the fame of this great product of American institutions. I had begun as early as 1860 to collect tro hies from his campaign, and had ever since then carefuiiy preserved every article I could secure that related in any way to his memory. The first thought that came into my mind, as I stood looking at that noble monument, was that of building a Memorial Hall in which to preserve the memorials I then possessed and those which I might subsequently secure, and I then and there adopted this plan. I have con tinned up to this time to gather Lincoln mementos, and have now in my possession nearly two thousand books, sermons, eulogies, poems, songs, portraits, badges, autograph letters, pins, medals, envelopes, statuettes.
