Book Synopsis Non-canonical Marking of Subjects and Objects by : Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald
Download or read book Non-canonical Marking of Subjects and Objects written by Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some languages every subject is marked in the same way, and also every object. But there are languages in which a small set of verbs mark their subjects or their objects in an unusual way. For example, most verbs may mark their subject with nominative case, but one small set of verbs may have dative subjects, and another small set may have locative subjects. Verbs with noncanonically marked subjects and objects typically refer to physiological states or events, inner feelings, perception and cognition. The Introduction sets out the theoretical parameters and defines the properties in terms of which subjects and objects can be analysed. Following chapters discuss Icelandic, Bengali, Quechua, Finnish, Japanese, Amele (a Papuan language), and Tariana (an Amazonian language); there is also a general discussion of European languages. This is a pioneering study providing new and fascinating data, and dealing with a topic of prime theoretical importance to linguists of many persuasions.

Book Synopsis The 1989 FAO Standard Specifications for the Marking and Identification of Fishing Vessels: Use and options for review by : Davies, S., Hjort, A. and Markides, M.
Download or read book The 1989 FAO Standard Specifications for the Marking and Identification of Fishing Vessels: Use and options for review written by Davies, S., Hjort, A. and Markides, M. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marking of fishing vessels is important for their identification, to support the global efforts to promote sustainable fisheries, for safety at sea and to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. For this reason, the FAO Standard Specifications for the Marking and Identification of Fishing Vessels were developed and endorsed by COFI in 1989 as a voluntary instrument providing a standardized system for the identification of fishing vessels operating, or likely to operate, in waters of another State. Global developments have had an impact on the usefulness of the FAO Standard Specifications, specifically the increased use of the International Maritime Organization number as a unique vessel identifier and the establishment of the FAO’s Global Record. This document provides background to the development of the FAO Standard Specifications and the results of a study to assess the level of their adoption at the national, regional and international levels. It also describes progress in the areas of vessel identity, vessel tracking, different vessel types and catch traceability and how these impact the usefulness of the FAO Standard Specifications. Finally, the document proposes a review and update of the FAO Standard Specifications.

Book Synopsis The Paradigmatic Structure of Person Marking by : Michael Cysouw
Download or read book The Paradigmatic Structure of Person Marking written by Michael Cysouw and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates paradigms of person - both independent pronouns as well as bound person marking. Based on empirical and theoretical grounds, the author argues that the notion 'number' has to be redefined to deal with the cross-linguistic variation of person marking. Equipped with a new definition, a typology of the paradigmatic structure of person marking is presented, incorporating data from around 400 languages. Nothing appears to be impossible for the paradigmatic structure, although some patterns are clearly more probable than others are. Starting from the more commonly occurring patterns, the diachronic dynamics of paradigmatic structure are investigated by comparing close relatives that differ slightly in the structure of their person paradigms.

Book Synopsis Diachrony of differential argument marking by : Ilja A. Seržant
Download or read book Diachrony of differential argument marking written by Ilja A. Seržant and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are languages that code a particular grammatical role (e.g. subject or direct object) in one and the same way across the board, many more languages code the same grammatical roles differentially. The variables which condition the differential argument marking (or DAM) pertain to various properties of the NP (such as animacy or definiteness) or to event semantics or various properties of the clause. While the main line of current research on DAM is mainly synchronic the volume tackles the diachronic perspective. The tenet is that the emergence and the development of differential marking systems provide a different kind of evidence for the understanding of the phenomenon. The present volume consists of 18 chapters and primarily brings together diachronic case studies on particular languages or language groups including e.g. Finno-Ugric, Sino-Tibetan and Japonic languages. The volume also includes a position paper, which provides an overview of the typology of different subtypes of DAM systems, a chapter on computer simulation of the emergence of DAM and a chapter devoted to the cross-linguistic effects of referential hierarchies on DAM.
