Book excerpt: Excerpt from Markets for Forest Products in Southeast Georgia Certainly the most practical way to sell timber is to market the product which will net the largest return, without overcutting or other wise impairing the Opportunities for future sales. What that product may be will be determined by the quality, size, and Species composition of the timber stand and by the markets which are available. Often it develops that sales of two or more products, such as poles and saw timber, or veneer logs and pulpwood, will yield a larger aggregate return than the sale of one average - quality product. Much of the farm woodland in South east Georgia lends itself to such combined sales, but to take advantage of this fact the owners must determine what products their individual stands are capable of producing, the location of markets for such products, and the price each prospective buyer will pay. Table 2 on pages 4 and 5 lists the average prices that were paid for various species and products in February 1949. Since then, a slacken ing demand for many finished wood products and the presence of increasing amounts of timber on the market have caused a reduction in the prices being offered for stumpage and rough forest products. It should also be remembered that stand quality, topography, length of haul, and other phys ical factors all exert an influence on the price a buyer can afford to pay. For these reasons, the chief usefulness of the prices shown is for compar ing products and Species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Markets for Forest Products in Southwest Georgia Forest products are an important industry in Georgia. In recent years, the State has consistently ranked either fifth or sixth in the Nation in the manufacture of both lumber and veneer and among the top ten in the production of pulpwood. Georgia is also noted for the variety of its minor wood products ranging from hickory ski blanks and parts for textile machinery to fence posts. Yet, unlike some other states with well= developed forest products industries, the commercial forest land of Georgia is predominantly in small ownerships. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Georgia's forests was completed in 1936. During this period annual production of lumber in Georgia more than doubled. Pulp wood production jumped from cords in 1937 to million cords in 1954. Georgia now produces more pulpwood and lumber than any other State in the South. Since 1936, over 16 million acres of forest land have been put under organized fire protection. Pine trees have been planted on more than one-half million acres. About 8 million acres of forest land have been put under management. During the 19 years that the Naval Stores Conservation Program has been in operation, turpentining practices have steadily improved. To get an accurate measure of the impact of these events on Geor gia's timber supply, a second inventory of the State's forests was begun in July 1950. In November 1953 the last of ground survey plots was taken. The findings of this second survey furnish the back ground for an understanding of the present forest conditions in Georgia and focus attention upon the principal forest problems and what needs to be done to solve them. No attempt is made to fully evaluate the use of forests for wildlife, recreation, or grazing; these uses are dis cussed only as they affect the timber supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marketing Farm Timber in Monroe County, Georgia Georgia piedmont near the geographical center of the State. Forsyth, the county seat, is about 70 miles from Atlanta and 20 miles from.macon on a line joining the two cities. Monroe County was chosen primarily because the timber, the prevailing methods of selling timber, and the products produced from timber were judged typical of a broad surrounding area the so-called concentration yard belt. This belt, extending through the piedmont from Virginia to Mississippi, is characterized by thousands of small portable sawmills cutting low-grade pine construction.lumber. The lumber is trucked to centrally-located planing mills or concentration yards where it is sorted, dressed, and otherwise prepared for market There are four of these yards in.monroe County and several more close to its borders in adjacent counties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Georgia's Future Timber Supply: An Economic Outlook This more than 2 million acre loss of forest land suitable for pine forestry partially reflects diversion to other land uses, as reflected by the decline of the total forest from million to million acres. But it also reflects the reversion of 1 million acres of forest land to hardwood forest types which are of limited value as a raw material source for Georgia 3 forest indus try and which are economically unfeasible for reconversion to pine forestry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of South Georgia Open waterways and narrow shoestring lake are to be found in all parts of the swamp. The Suwannee River originates in the western part of the swamp and flows southwest into the Gulf of Mexico, while the St. Marys River emerges from the southeast corner and flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Okefenokee Swamp was largely unsurveyed State property until 1889, when the State land was sold to the Suwannee. Canal Co., which attempted to drain and reclaim the area. This gigantic task, known as jackson's Folly, was abandoned in the middle nineties as unsound, and the timber re sources were placed on the market. Approximately acres, including the major portion of the swamp, were purchased by a large lumber company that began logging operations about 1910. From then' until 1926, when active operations ceased, approximately 400 million board feet of cypress and about 60 million board feet of pine were removed. No blackgum was logged, and it was believed that over 100 million board feet were left standing in the areas cut for cypress. Since 1926, several small companies have successfully Operated in the smaller and more sparsely stocked stands bordering the swamp, and the cutting of cypress railroad ties has long been an activity along the outer rim. A severe fire which swept the swamp in the spring of 1932 and destroyed much of the residual stand caused particularly heavy damage in the western part, where well over one-third of the blackgum was said to be destroyed. The Bureau of Biological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, has recently acquired approximately acres, to be administered as a game and bird refuge. Here the unique and interesting natural conditions can be studied and the vanishing bird and animal life protected and preserved for future generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Georgia Forest Resources and Industries In the endeavor to ascertain how important such re sources are to the people of the State and how they can be made even more valuable, a State-wide field inventory was conducted in Georgia during 1934, 1935, and 1936 by the Forest Survey, employing several crews of three men and a supervisor.1 Parallel lines 10 miles apart were run approximately east and west across the State. At % mile intervals along each line, quarter-acre sample plots were established. In the southeastern part of the State, because of relative inaccessibility, the Okefenokee Swamp acres) and coastal islands acres) were 'not covered in the field survey. On the forest plots examined, the field men recorded such items as forest type, forest condition, fire damage, density and distribution of repro duction, and site quality. They tallied the trees by species and diameter class and. Made increment borings to deter mine total age of the stand and growth of the timber during the last 10 years. These data, together with some esti mates for the areas not covered by the field survey, furnish the basis for the statistics of area, volume, and growth presented in this report. Information on forest industries and timber-drain figures for 1934, 1935, 1930, and 1937 were obtained from a can vass of the wood-using plants and local wood consumers.
