Book excerpt: Winner of the 2009 Critics Choice Book Award of the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Through careful ethnographic research, Market Movements represents community leaders, school officials, and most importantly, African American working class families who have used vouchers as a means of removing their children from public schools they deemed unacceptable. The book works to discern the overlaps and tensions between the educational visions of African American voucher families and those of powerful conservative educational forces in U.S. society which purport to be allied with them. To the extent that there are points of divergence with the educational right, and points of convergence with educational progressives, this book provides a hopeful message and a practical vision. It seeks to accomplish some of the critical empirical and conceptual groundwork that is necessary in order to renew the increasingly fractious relations between those social actors—teachers, communities of color, critical researchers, and labor unions—most likely to defend and expand previous social democratic victories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arms traders and sophisticated individual investors with the tools they need to play the markets successfully Many traders believe that they must perform at least one trade every day, no matter what. However, as expert Price Headley clearly demonstrates in this groundbreaking book, not only is that assumption false, it can also be dangerous. He shows why focusing too narrowly on the daily ebb and flow of the markets minimizes a trader's chances for the big returns. He explains why maximum results are achieved by identifying the big market trends and riding them for all their worth. Headley explores the major market indicators-including the popular CBOE Volatility Index, Nasdaq 100, Rydex Mutual Fund Flows, and Equity Put/Call Ratio-and shows readers how to use them to identify the stocks that are about to take off. Emphasizing the aggressive use of options, he also empowers investors with stock selection techniques and options strategies that work in virtually every type of market.

Book excerpt: The book titled "Prediction of Stock Market Index Movements with Machine Learning" focuses on the performance of machine learning methods in forecasting the future movements of stock market indexes and identifying the most advantageous methods that can be used across different stock exchanges. In this context, applications have been conducted on both developed and emerging market stock exchanges. The stock market indexes of developed countries such as NYSE 100, NIKKEI 225, FTSE 100, CAC 40, DAX 30, FTSE MIB, TSX; and the stock market indexes of emerging countries such as SSE, BOVESPA, RTS, NIFTY 50, IDX, IPC, and BIST 100 were selected. The movement directions of these stock market indexes were predicted using decision trees, random forests, k-nearest neighbors, naive Bayes, logistic regression, support vector machines, and artificial neural networks methods. Daily dataset from 01.01.2012 to 31.12.2021, along with technical indicators, were used as input data for analysis. According to the results obtained, it was determined that artificial neural networks were the most effective method during the examined period. Alongside artificial neural networks, logistic regression and support vector machines methods were found to predict the movement direction of all indexes with an accuracy of over 70%. Additionally, it was noted that while artificial neural networks were identified as the best method, they did not necessarily achieve the highest accuracy for all indexes. In this context, it was established that the performance of the examined methods varied among countries and indexes but did not differ based on the development levels of the countries. As a conclusion, artificial neural networks, logistic regression, and support vector machines methods are recommended as the most advantageous approaches for predicting stock market index movements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progressive economics writer redefines the national conversation about American freedom “Mike Konczal [is] one of our most powerful advocates of financial reform‚ [a] heroic critic of austerity‚ and a huge resource for progressives.”—Paul Krugman Health insurance, student loan debt, retirement security, child care, work-life balance, access to home ownership—these are the issues driving America’s current political debates. And they are all linked, as this brilliant and timely book reveals, by a single question: should we allow the free market to determine our lives? In the tradition of Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine, noted economic commentator Mike Konczal answers this question with a resounding no. Freedom from the Market blends passionate political argument and a bold new take on American history to reveal that, from the earliest days of the republic, Americans have defined freedom as what we keep free from the control of the market. With chapters on the history of the Homestead Act and land ownership, the eight-hour work day and free time, social insurance and Social Security, World War II day cares, Medicare and desegregation, free public colleges, intellectual property, and the public corporation, Konczal shows how citizens have fought to ensure that everyone has access to the conditions that make us free. At a time when millions of Americans—and more and more politicians—are questioning the unregulated free market, Freedom from the Market offers a new narrative, and new intellectual ammunition, for the fight that lies ahead.
