Book Synopsis The bioeconomy and non-timber forest products by : Carsten Smith-Hall
Download or read book The bioeconomy and non-timber forest products written by Carsten Smith-Hall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first in-depth investigation of how non-timber forest products are an integral part of local, national, and global bioeconomies. While the plants and fungi that produce non-timber forest products are essential to the sustainability of forest ecosystems, peoples' food and livelihood security and sovereignty, and thus the bioeconomy, are often absent from bioeconomic strategies. Presenting a selection of empirical cases from around the world that engage with the bioeconomy and non-timber forest products, this volume reveals how essential these products are to creating a greener and more sustainable future, how to to better integrate them into efforts to transition to and expand the bioeconomy, and how such efforts can be supported and developed. Chapters analyse how and to what degree non-timber forest products promote sustainable resource use, generate employment, and contribute to food and livelihood security and poverty alleviation. The volume develops approaches and identifies interventions and policies to support the integration of non-timber forest products into bioeconomy strategies, including in national reporting schemes to provide recommendations for future research and practical implementation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of forest and natural resource management, bioeconomics, circular economy and ecological economics more widely. It will also be of interest to professionals working in sustainable development and the forestry sector.

Book Synopsis Marketing Recommendations for Wood Products from Alaska Birch, Red Alder, and Alaska Yellow-cedar by : Geoffrey H. Donovan
Download or read book Marketing Recommendations for Wood Products from Alaska Birch, Red Alder, and Alaska Yellow-cedar written by Geoffrey H. Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several factors have contributed to a recent decline in Alaska's wood products industry, including reduced exports to Japan and the closure of two pulp mills in southeast Alaska. However, higher value niche markets are a potential growth area for the industry. In this paper, we consider niche markets for three species that have historically been harvested in low volumes--Alaska birch (Betula papyrifera var. humilis (Reg.) Fern. & Raup), red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), and Alaska yellowcedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach). The extent of the resource, current utilization, and an overview of recent research efforts are examined. Specific marketing recommendations are then provided for each species, based on these evaluations. Wide-ranging opportunities for a variety of primary and secondary wood products exist that utilize character-marked lumber, lower grades of lumber, and material from standing-dead sources. This report concludes with a framework for future research, identifying key opportunities to differentiate Alaska wood products in the marketplace.

Download or read book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade written by Edward B Barbier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade provides a detailed analysis of the economic linkages between the trade and forest degradation. Based on a report prepared for the ITTO, it looks current and future market conditions at the time of publication, and assesses the impacts on current and future market conditions, and assesses the impacts on tropical forests of both the international timber trade and domestic demand. The authors examine the causes of deforestation and compare the environmental impacts of the timber trade with other factors, such as the conversion of the forests to agriculture. Finally, they assess the national and international trade policy options, and discuss the potential role of interventions in the international timber trade in promoting efficient and sustainable use of forest resources. The book will be of interest to those concerned with forest management and policy, trade and environment, and with the economics of conversation and resource use.
