Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the first full-length treatment of the child in Spanish cinema, Sarah Wright explores the ways that the cinematic child comes to represent 'prosthetic memory'. The central theme of the child and the monster is used to examine the relationship of the self to the past, and to cinema. Focusing on the films from the 1950s to the present day, the book explores religious films, musicals, 'art-house horror', science fiction, social realism and fantasy in Spanish film and includes reference to Erice's The Spirit of The Beehive, del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Mañas's El Bola and the Marisol films. The book draws on a century of filmmaking in Spain and also intersects with recent revelations concerning the horrors of the Spanish past. The child is a potent motif for the loss of historical memory and for its recuperation through cinema. This book is suitable for scholars and undergraduates working in the area of Spanish cinema, Spanish cultural studies, and cinema studies.

She takes a semester of study abroad in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2003 Senior Book Prize from the American Ethnological Society. Cholas and Pishtacos are two provocative characters from South American popular culture—a sensual mixed-race woman and a horrifying white killerwho show up in everything from horror stories and dirty jokes to romantic novels and travel posters. In this elegantly written book, these two figures become vehicles for an exploration of race, sex, and violence that pulls the reader into the vivid landscapes and lively cities of the Andes. Weismantel's theory of race and sex begins not with individual identity but with three forms of social and economic interaction: estrangement, exchange, and accumulation. She maps the barriers that separate white and Indian, male and female-barriers that exist not in order to prevent exchange, but rather to exacerbate its inequality. Weismantel weaves together sources ranging from her own fieldwork and the words of potato sellers, hotel maids, and tourists to classic works by photographer Martin Chambi and novelist José María Arguedas. Cholas and Pishtacos is also an enjoyable and informative introduction to a relatively unknown region of the Americas.

Book excerpt: Diversity, Oppression, and Change, Third Edition provides a culturally grounded approach to practice, policy, and research in social work and allied fields. The book's intersectionality perspective provides a lens through which students can identify connections between identities based on race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, religion, and ability status. Through theoretical and empirical content as well as "Notes from the Field," students become familiar with the culturally grounded perspective and culturally appropriate ways of engaging with diverse communities. Marsiglia, Kulis, and Lechuga-Pe?a have crafted a book about hope and resiliency, the miraculous ability of individuals and communities to bounce back from oppressive experiences and historical trauma, and the role of social workers as allies in that journey.

Book excerpt: In 2016 the Super Bowl came to San Francisco. The unhoused were moved to Division Street where, officials hoped, they would be 'invisible'. Amid the unlimited wealth of that 'super' week, the unhoused were crowded together in tents or sleeping rough on the ground. No facilities and no promises of permanent housing were given. The voices of the unhoused on Division Street are integral to this project. Through photographs, first-person storytelling, messages left on the street, media headlines and politicians' characterizations we see the invisible.
