Download or read book Imagining Sameness and Difference in Children's Literature written by Emer O'Sullivan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how cultural sameness and difference has been presented in a variety of forms and genres of children’s literature from Denmark, Germany, France, Russia, Britain, and the United States; ranging from English caricatures of the 1780s to dynamic representations of contemporary cosmopolitan childhood. The chapters address different models of presenting foreigners using examples from children’s educational prints, dramatic performances, travel narratives, comics, and picture books. Contributors illuminate the ways in which the texts negotiate the tensions between the Enlightenment ideal of internationalism and discrete national or ethnic identities cultivated since the Romantic era, providing examples of ethnocentric cultural perspectives and of cultural relativism, as well as instances where discussions of child reader agency indicate how they might participate eventually in a tolerant transnational community.

Book Synopsis Flower Poetics in Nineteenth-century France by : Philip Knight
Download or read book Flower Poetics in Nineteenth-century France written by Philip Knight and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of Baudelaire's famed collection of poetry, Les Fleurs du Mal, suggests the importance of flower figures for one of the major French poets of the l9th-century. Yet, until now, critics have largely overlooked the significance of flower imagery for the poetics of Baudelaire, his Romantic predecessors, contemporaries, and Symbolist successors. In this study, Philip Knight examines the general trends in poetic flower imagery, discussing the influence of popular paraliterature's idealization of flowers, and finally arguing that flower figures became the one indispensable emblem of both continuity and change for the poets of the time.

Book Synopsis The Renaissance in the Nineteenth Century by : Victoria University (Toronto, Ont.). Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies

Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies and published by Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies. This book was released on 2003 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century witnessed rapid economic and social developments, profound political and intellectual upheaval, and startling innovations in art and literature. As Europeans peered into an uncertain future, they drew upon the Renaissance for meaning, precedents, and identity. Many claimed to find inspiration or models in the Renaissance, but as we move across the continent's borders and through the century's decades, we find that the Renaissance was many different things to many different people. This collection brings together the work of sixteen authors who examine the many Renaissances conceived by European novelists and poets, artists and composers, architects and city planners, political theorists and politicians, businessmen and advertisers. The essays fall into three groups: "Aesthetic Recoveries of Strategic Pasts"; "The Renaissance in Nineteenth-Century Culture Wars"; and "Material Culture and Manufactured Memories."
