Book excerpt: "Marguerite de Valois" is a biographical novel on the French Queen of the same name, written by historian and author Alexander Dumas. Margaret of Valois was a French princess of the Valois dynasty who became Queen of Navarre by marriage to Henry III of Navarre and then also Queen of France at her husband's 1589 accession to the French throne as Henry IV. Her marriage to Henry III had astonished every one, given the raging religious feud among the French nobility. They found it difficult to understand the union of two parties who hated each other so thoroughly as did, at this moment, the Protestant party and the Catholic party, though the reigning King of France, Charles IX, was strongly in favor.

It is the third and last of The d'Artagnan Romances, following 'The Three Musketeers' and 'Twenty Years After'. Set in the 1660s and concerned with the early reign of Louis XIV, the novel has been called an "origins" story of the King, "a tale about the education of a young man who went on to rule for over 70 years and become one of France's most beloved monarchs." Naturally, in a novel about Dumas' musketeers, the characters play an important role in Louis' education.

Book Synopsis Ashes of the Beacon by : Ambrose Bierce
Download or read book Ashes of the Beacon written by Ambrose Bierce and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-25 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ashes of the Beacon" purports to be "An Historical Monograph Written in 4930" and gives a few indications concerning the lamentable failure of "self-government" in America. It is less amusing and more analytical; and while practically everyone will find much in it to disagree with, there is also plenty to think about. Though generally conservative and frequently pigheaded, Bierce is neither a fool nor a hypocrite, and he makes his points with thoroughgoing clarity. His work as a whole is a lifelong battle against woolly thinking, murky logic and bad writing. Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842 – 1914?) was an American satirist, critic, poet, editor and journalist. Bierce became a prolific author of short stories often humorous and sometimes bitter or macabre. He spoke out against oppression and supported civil and religious freedoms. He also wrote numerous Civil War stories from first-hand experience. Many of his works are ranked among other esteemed American authors' like Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen Crane, and Mark Twain.
