Book excerpt: Beautiful, headstrong Afton is taken from her parents at an early age and raised in the castle, a companion to the earl's daughter. Schooled in the ways of kings and surrounded by splendor, Afton falls in love with the earl's son, brave, Calhoun, her childhood protector. But Calhoun's mother, the Lady Endeline, has much different plans for him than marriage to a villein's daughter. Suddenly Afton's world is torn viciously apart. She is cast out of the castle, given to a man she fears and despises as a reward for his loyalty-an all too clear reminder that, for all her dreams, she is nothing but a villein. Now all she has left is a burning desire for vengeance . . . What people have said about Afton of Margate Castle: "Forgiveness and reconciliation are strong words-as is the word reality. All three are here in Angie Hunt's Afton of Margate Castle. I recommend it to you." -Eugenia Price"A great story demonstrating the universality of human nature, which is the foundation for the relevance of all history. Afton's search for her own identity within a traditional cultural context is as contemporary as tomorrow's newspaper." -Thomas O. Kay, Chairman of the History Department, Wheaton College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, in a series of mysterious, incandescent writings, David Seabrook told of the places he knew best: the declining resort towns of the Kent coast. The pieces were no advert for the local tourist board. Here, the ghosts of murderers and mad artists crawl the streets. Septuagenarian rent boys recall the good old days and Carry On stars go to seed. Clandestine fascist networks emerge. And all the time, there is Seabrook himself - desperate perhaps, and in danger. Dark, strange and immediate, this is a classic work of sui generis British literature. There are devils here, and the reader will remember them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seaside holiday and the seaside resort are two of England's greatest exports to the world. Since the early 18th century, when some of the wealthiest people first sought improved health by bathing in saltwater, the lure of the sea has been a fundamental part of the British way of life, and millions of people still head to the coast each year. Margate has an important place in the story of seaside holidays. It vies with Scarborough, Whitby and Brighton for the title of England's first seaside resort, and it was the first to offer sea-water baths to visitors. Margate can also claim other firsts, including the first Georgian square built at a seaside resort (Cecil Square), the first substantial seaside development outside the footprint of an historic coastal town, the site of the world's first sea-bathing hospital, and, as a result of its location along the Thames from London, the first popular resort frequented by middle- and lower-middle-class holidaymakers. It is unlikely that Margate will ever attract the vast numbers of visitors that flocked there in the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, with growing concerns about the environmental effects of air travel and a continuing awareness of the threat of excessive exposure to the sun, the English seaside holiday may enjoy some form of revival. If Margate finds ways to renew itself while retaining its historic identity, it may once again become a vibrant destination for holidays, as well as being an attractive place for people to live and work.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1820 edition. Excerpt: ... margate. We shall now, according to the accompanying plate, take a general view of Margate, a markettown and borough, in the jurisdiction of the liberties of Dover, and in the county of Kent, situated on the sea-coast, at the northern extremity of the Isle of Thanet, sixteen miles distant from Canterbury, forty-four miles E. N. E. from Maidstone, and seventy-two and a half miles E. from London. It was formerly called St. John's, it being in the parish of St. John the Baptist: its present name (properly MeregateJ is derived from an opening, or gate, through which there was a small stream, or mere, running into the sea. Though now a watering place of much fashionable resort, it was formerly a mean fishing town, irregularly built, and the houses generally old and low. Its antiquity, however, is much more considerable: it has been a member of the port and town of Dover from a remote period; and, even in Leland's time, there was a pier " here for shyppes;" but " sore decayed;" the time of building which is unknown. When the survey of maritime places in Kent was made in the eighth year of Queen Elizabeth's reign, the number of houses in Margate was 108; " persons lacking proper habitations, eight; boats, and other vessels, fifteen, viz. eight of one ton, one of two, One of five, four of eighteen, and one of sixteen; the persons belonging to these boats, occupied in the carrying of grain, were sixty." It was, however, in such repute in the coasting trade, and for its fishery, as to hold a market in the reign of Charles I., of which a monthly return was made to Dover; but this was soon discontinued. On the scite of the present pier there was anciently a small creek, which probably gave origin to the town, from the shelter it afforded to fishing...

Book excerpt: This “interesting, insightful book” by the author of Deep South reveals “a side of Britain few visitors see” (The New York Times Book Review). After eleven years as an American living in London, the renowned travel writer Paul Theroux set out to travel clockwise around the coast of Great Britain to find out what the British were really like. The result is this perceptive, hilarious record of the journey. Whether in Cornwall or Wales, Ulster or Scotland, the people he encountered along the way revealed far more of themselves than they perhaps intended to display to a stranger. Theroux captured their rich and varied conversational commentary with caustic wit and penetrating insight. “A sharp and funny descriptive writer . . . Theroux is a good companion.” —The Times (London)

Book excerpt: The intimate memoirs of one of the most acclaimed and controversial artists of her generation. Here I am, a fucked, crazy, anorexic-alcoholic-childless, beautiful woman. I never dreamt it would be like this. 'Frequently affecting...intriguing, almost incantatory' Telegraph Tracey Emin's Strangeland is her own space, lying between the Margate of her childhood, the Turkey of her forefathers and her own, private-public life in present-day London. Her writings, a combination of memoirs and confessions, are deeply intimate, yet powerfully engaging. Tracey retains a profoundly romantic world view, paired with an uncompromising honesty. Her capacity both to create controversies and to strike chords is unequalled in British life. A remarkable book - and an original, beautiful mind. 'As spare and poignant as one of Emin's line drawings' Marie Claire
