Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Margaret and her friend the Pope continues with Book 3 in The Pope’s Cat series. This adventure has Margaret experiencing the prayers, penitence, liturgy, and excitement of Holy Week in the Vatican and Rome—from the joy of Palm Sunday in St. Peter's Square, to foot-washing in a Roman prison, the solemnity of Good Friday, and the expectation of Easter. She learns about Jesus and the meaning of his Passion, visits important new places such as The Sistine Chapel, where she seems to pray beside the Pope, and the Roman Colosseum, where she learns that many early Christians were martyrs for their faith. Margaret's friends, the Swiss Guards, are watching over her, and she manages to eat (she still loves to eat!) some interesting foods, even though it's Holy Week. Oh yes, and she sleeps a lot.

No one has a closer view of what’s happening in the world’s tiniest nation, Vatican City, than Margaret, the Pope’s new cat. But she wasn’t always Margaret, and she wasn’t always the Pope’s cat. She started out as a stray on the streets of Rome, and there are those in the Vatican who wish she’d never been allowed inside. This fun, adorable new character will appeal to all kids! Here is a cat who does what she likes regardless of what others, even someone like the Pope, expects of her!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Before Margaret met the Pope, she lived on the streets of Rome. She was a small cat in one of the busiest, most crowded, cities in all Europe. Rome is the capital of Italy. Rome surrounds Vatican City, the world’s tiniest country, and home to the Pope, the Curia, and the Swiss Guard." So begins this fifth adventure in the lives of Margaret and the Pope. A prequel, this episode tells of the conclave that elected the Pope who would one day meet Margaret on the Via della Conciliazone. It turns out, Margaret was somehow there, watching, in the Sistine Chapel as the votes were cast. Children and adults alike will delight in this behind-the-scenes story about love and the Church, learning not only about what popes do, but this time, how popes are chosen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Works of Margaret Fuller emerges as a seminal anthology, encapsulating the breadth of Transcendentalist thought and the variegated fabric of 19th-century American literature. Through essays, letters, and critical writings, the collection not only foregrounds Fullers intellectual dexterity and pioneering feminist thought but also serves as a vibrant tapestry of literary styles ranging from transcendental exploration to impassioned social critique. The inclusion of works by Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Freeman Clarke, Julia Ward Howe, and W. H. Channing enriches this compilation, presenting readers with a rounded perspective on the eras ideological and cultural currents. The contributors, luminaries in their own right, bring together a confluence of philosophical, social, and literary ideas that shaped the contours of American thought. Fuller, with her compatriots, stood at the heart of the Transcendentalist movement, advocating for self-reliance, freedom, and a deeper connection with the natural world. Together, they encapsulated the spirit of an age grappling with issues of gender, identity, and reform. The anthology traces these dialogues, offering a panoramic view of a transformative period in American intellectual history. This collection is an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and enthusiasts of American literature and history. It transcends mere academic interest, inviting readers into a richly woven dialogue of ideas that continue to resonate. The Complete Works of Margaret Fuller offers a unique entry point into the complexities of Transcendentalist thought, capturing the movements essence through its most influential voices. These pages promise an enriching exploration of a pivotal chapter in the American literary canon, inviting a deeper appreciation for the interplay of individual and collective contributions to societal progress and cultural definition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize–winning author’s stirring biography of the thirteenth-century Italian penitent who become the patron saint of the homeless. Born in 1247 to a farming family in a small village outside Perugia, Margaret of Cortona was willful and reckless in her youth. At age seventeen, she became a wealthy man’s mistress—even bearing his son out of wedlock. But her life of sin ended when she found her lover murdered. Devoting herself to prayer and penance, Margaret eventually joined the Third Order of St. Francis and took a vow of poverty. She established a hospital for the poor and homeless at Cortona. On divine command, she challenged her own bishop for his lavish and warlike lifestyle. Canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1728, she became a patron saint of the downtrodden, including the falsely accused, homeless, orphaned, and mentally ill, as well as midwives, penitents, single mothers, reformed prostitutes, and third children. For François Mauriac, Saint Margaret of Cortona became a source of fascination and solace during the Nazi occupation of France. During that time, feeling himself and all his countrymen to be among the downtrodden, he wrote this biography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli (1810-1850) received a broad education and early felt a deep interest in social questions. She learned French, German and the classics, and her associates in Cambridge were persons of culture, experience and advanced ideas. In 1833 the family removed to Groton, Mass., where she gave lessons to private classes in languages and other studies. In 1836 she went to Boston, where she taught Latin and French in A. Bronson Alcott's school, and taught private classes of girls in French, German and Italian. In 1837 she became a teacher in a private school in Providence, R. I., which was organized on Mr. Alcott's plan. She translated many works from the German and other languages. In 1839 she instituted in Boston her conversational class, which was continued for several years. She did much writing on subjects connected with her educational work. In 1840 she became the editor of "The Dial." which she managed for two years. Her contributions to the journal were numerous. Several volumes of translations from the German were brought out by her. In 1843 she went on a western tour with James Freeman Clarke and his artist-sister, and her first original work, "Summer on the Lakes," was the result of that trip. In 1844 she removed to New York City, where for two years she furnished literary criticisms for the "Tribune." In 1846 she published her volume. "Papers on Literature and Art." After twenty months of life in New York she went to Europe, she met in Italy, in 1847, Giovani Angelo, Marquis Ossoli, a man younger than she and of less intellectual culture, but a simple and noble man, who had given up his rank and station in the cause of the Roman Republic. They were married in 1847. After the fall of the republic it was necessary for them to leave Rome, and Madame Ossoli, desiring to print in America her history of the Italian struggle, suggested their return to the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fourth installment of “The Pope's Cat” series, Margaret and the Pope travel for the first time together away from the Vatican and out of Rome. They go by train to the Umbrian hill town of Assisi, a place of pilgrimage for Christians all over the world who want to remember the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Together they visit the great Basilica named for St. Francis, greet Franciscan friars at the monastery, attend a World Day of Prayer for Peace, meet religious leaders (each, it seems, with a very different hat!) from around the world, and see evidence of the spirit of St. Francis all over town. Most of all, the Pope shows his love and care for his vulnerable creature friend, as at the beginning of the book when someone from the Curia has frightened Margaret and she's hiding in a closet in the Pope's apartment. “Don’t worry, il mio amore.” (Il mio amore means “My love.”) “People can be so fussy, can’t they?” the Pope says, picking her up in his arms.
