Book excerpt: Marcus Liu is a teenager living in Atlanta, Georgia, who spends his time going to school, reading books, and hanging out at the arcade with his friend Rick. One day Marcus realizes he’s being followed by a mysterious girl. When he finally confronts her, the girl—whose name is Tory—reveals that she was sent to tell Marcus of his true identity. Marcus, like his mother, is from the world of the fae and is only half-human. At first Marcus thinks Tory is crazy—but then he realizes that Tory has tiny horns; she is a satyr. He then reluctantly asks what his non-human half is. Tory tells him that he’s half bird, that soon he will start to develop wings, and that when he does, his fae powers will emerge. To prove her story to Marcus and to show him where he’s really from, Tory takes him to the world of the fae, where they soon discover that an ancient artifact, a staff used long ago to close the portals between the many worlds, has been stolen. Marcus and Tory, along with their friends, must find the Staff of Cyntheyrin before it can be used to reopen the portals. It seems like a straightforward task, but things may not be as they seem in this other world.
