Marco did not succeed so well, and at last he said, " I wonder why I don't get any bites." "You had better put your line close in to the wharf," said one of the boys. Marco could not help feeling a little chagrined to find that his pole was not only of no advantage to him, but an actual disadvantage. He was very unwilling to lay it aside and fish like the other boys, directly from the edge of the wharf. He contrived, however, by standing back a little and holding his pole in an oblique position, to draw his line nearer to the wharf, where, the boys said, the fish were most likely to bite. In this way he succeeded. He caught several fishes, which he laid down, as fast as he caught them, at the foot of an enormous round post that was standing near him. He spent more than an hour here, highly enjoying the fishing, and yet there was mingled with his delight a feeling of inquietude and self-reproach, which made his situation, on the whole, rather a painful one.
