Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 185 the Indiana Historical Society has added cartographic gems to its collection. The scope of the maps maintained by the Society ranges from several Old World views of the North America to more contemporary views of Indiana counties and towns. While the focus of the map collection is broad geographically, its core subject is Indiana and the documentation of the states evolving history. Two introductory essays by noted cartographers relate the history of mapmaking from the early days of maps in America to the present as well as the history of maps in the state. Approximately one hundred maps from the Society's collection are highlighted with brief essays on each.

This book was released on 1909 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection consists of an index to the holdings of the Maine Historical Societys collection of maps and photographs that were part of the Survey of State and Local Historical Records, 1936, of the Historical Records Survey conducted by the Works Progress Adminstration. The bulk of the collection consists of Maps and Photographs Forms that contain information about an object at the item level. In addition to the Maps and Photographs Forms, there are seven bound volumes (manuscript) that serve as an inventory to maps, compiled prior to the HRS survey in 1909, and are not part of the WPA work. These inventories contain, in most cases, a unique map number, a map title, and the area the map covers. In some cases, original dimensions are noted as well as additional information about the creation of the map, and an indication of whether maps were placed in the Willis Papers collection. The bulk of the volumes were compiled by Wilhelmina M. Mantine in April, 1909. The inventories cover Maps of Portland Maine and Vicinity; Maps of New England, excepting Maine; Maps in the Basement; Maps of the United States, Maps of the Middle States, Maps of the World; List of Maps of America and the World; Maps of the Southern and Western States; Maps of Canada, British Possessions, and Early Maps of America and the World.

Book excerpt: First published in 1958, The Southeast in Early Maps is William Cumming's classic study of the mapping of the Southeast before the American Revolution. By analyzing printed and manuscript maps of the area in the light of other contemporary primary documents, the book traces the expansion of geographical knowledge about the Southeast over the course of its discovery and colonization. With 124 illustrations--including a new gallery of 24 color reproductions of maps selected from the Cumming Collection in the E. H. Little Library at Davidson College--this stunning edition will be a valuable reference for scholars, collectors, cartographers, geographers, historians, archaeologists, archivists, librarians, genealogists, and surveyors. It features an introductory essay on the early historical cartography of the region, an extensive annotated checklist of printed and manuscript local maps from the colonial period, an updated bibliography, and a new section on the role of Native Americans in the mapping of the Southeast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the little known history of one of history’s most famous maps – and its maker Tucked away in a near-forgotten collection, Virginia and Maryland as it is Planted and Inhabited is one of the most extraordinary maps of colonial British America. Created by a colonial merchant, planter, and diplomat named Augustine Herrman, the map pictures the Mid-Atlantic in breathtaking detail, capturing its waterways, coastlines, and communities. Herrman spent three decades travelling between Dutch New Amsterdam and the English Chesapeake before eventually settling in Maryland and making this map. Although the map has been reproduced widely, the history of how it became one of the most famous images of the Chesapeake has never been told. A Biography of a Map in Motion uncovers the intertwined stories of the map and its maker, offering new insights into the creation of empire in North America. The book follows the map from the waterways of the Chesapeake to the workshops of London, where it was turned into a print and sold. Transported into coffee houses, private rooms, and government offices, Virginia and Maryland became an apparatus of empire that allowed English elites to imaginatively possess and accurately manage their Atlantic colonies. Investigating this map offers the rare opportunity to recapture the complementary and occasionally conflicting forces that created the British Empire. From the colonial and the metropolitan to the economic and the political to the local and the Atlantic, this is a fascinating exploration of the many meanings of a map, and how what some saw as establishing a sense of local place could translate to forging an empire.
