Book excerpt: Quenched jets produced in heavy ion collisions at the LHC and reconstructed with the CMS detector are studied to understand the nature of interactions between hardscattered partons and the simultaneously produced hot and dense medium, the Quark- Gluon Plasma (QGP). Jets are objects with color charge evolving through many energy scales, so are an excellent tool for scattering experiment in QGP, with potential to resolve quasiparticle structure and induce medium response. Redistribution of jet energy is quantified in two methods: measurement of transverse PT of final state particles projected onto dijet azimuthal axis, and measurement of jet production cross sections in PbPb and pp as function of jet radius. Missing momentum shows recovery of lost energy when moving beyond the jet cone for a fixed collection of jets, approaching full recovery at ... A jet radius scan of jet production cross sections shows consistent observed suppression in PbPb when compared to appropriately scaled pp at all radii. However, less suppression is observed with increasing jet resolution parameter R. In combination the results imply that while jet energy lost to medium interactions can be found when looking beyond the jet cone, the substantial changes to the jet population in pp at each studied R lead to sustained spectral suppression with even the largest cone size.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurement of jet shapes, defined as the fractional transverse momentum radial distribution, for inclusive jets produced in heavy-ion collisions is presented. Data samples of PbPb and pp collisions, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 150 inverse microbarns and 5.3 inverse picobarns respectively, were collected at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with a distance parameter R=0.3, and the jet shapes are measured for charged particles with transverse momentum pt> 1 GeV. The jet shapes measured in PbPb collisions in different collision centralities are compared to reference distributions based on the pp data. A centrality-dependent modification of the jet shapes is observed in the more central PbPb collisions, indicating a redistribution of the energy inside the jet cone. This measurement provides information about the parton shower mechanism in the hot and dense medium produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Book excerpt: This thesis studies of two particle correlations in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (pPb), and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions, as well as jet fragmentation functions for jets paired with an isolated prompt photon in pp and PbPb collisions to better understand matter in a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) state. The correlation studies measure the precise hydrodynamic behavior of PbPb collisions through a Fourier analysis of charged particles emitted from the QGP and show unexpectedly strong collective behavior in high multiplicity pp and pPb collisions. The photon-tagged jet studies provide tight constraints for understanding the interactions between the jet and the Quark Gluon Plasma it traverses by both measuring the jet substructure properties via the fragmentation function, and having a sample of jets unbiased by the interactions we are trying to probe by selecting high energy photon events. These analyses are performed using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from PbPb, pPb, and pp collisions at a center of mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon-nucleon pair, as well as 2.76 TeV PbPb collisions and 7 TeV pp collisions in the correlation analyses.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the latest experimental results on jet physics from proton-proton collisons at the LHC. Jets allow to determine the strong coupling constant over a wide range of energies up the highest ones possible so far, and to constrain the gluon parton distribution of the proton, both of which are important uncertainties on theory predictions in general and for the Higgs boson in particular.A novel approach in this book is to categorize the examined quantities according to the types of absolute, ratio, or shape measurements and to explain in detail the advantages and differences. Including numerous illustrations and tables the physics message and impact of each observable is clearly elaborated.

Book excerpt: Using the CMS detector at the LHC, a quantitative study of jet energy loss and angular deflection inside the high energy-density medium formed in PbPb collisions is made. Photons are used to measure the initial state of a color-charged probe while jet reconstruction is used to measure the final state. Significant loss of energy to the medium as a function of initial parton momentum is observed, while no significant angular deflection is found.

Book excerpt: Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 inverse microbarns. Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse momentum is observed, consistent with jet quenching. The observed effect extends from the lower cut-off used in this study (jet transverse momentum = 120 GeV/c) up to the statistical limit of the available data sample (jet transverse momentum approximately 210 GeV/c). Correlations of charged particle tracks with jets indicate that the momentum imbalance is accompanied by a softening of the fragmentation pattern of the second most energetic, away-side jet. The dijet momentum balance is recovered when integrating low transverse momentum particles distributed over a wide angular range relative to the direction of the away-side jet.

Book excerpt: In this study, jets are one of the most prominent physics signatures of high energy proton–proton (p–p) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). They are key physics objects for precision measurements and searches for new phenomena. This review provides an overview of the reconstruction and calibration of jets at the LHC during its first Run. ATLAS and CMS developed different approaches for the reconstruction of jets, but use similar methods for the energy calibration. ATLAS reconstructs jets utilizing input signals from their calorimeters and use charged particle tracks to refine their energy measurement and suppress the effects of multiple p–p interactions (pileup). CMS, instead, combines calorimeter and tracking information to build jets from particle flow objects. Jets are calibrated using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and a residual in situ calibration derived from collision data is applied to correct for the differences in jet response between data and Monte Carlo.

Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

Book excerpt: Interactions between jets and the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions are studied via the angular distributions of summed charged-particle transverse momenta (pT) with respect to both the leading and subleading jet axes in high-pt dijet events. The contributions of charged particles in different momentum ranges to the overall event pt balance are decomposed into short-range jet peaks and a long-range azimuthal asymmetry in charged-particle pT. The results for PbPb collisions are compared to those in pp collisions using data collected in 2011 and 2013, at collision energy $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{N}\;\mathrm{N}}}=2.76 $ TeV with integrated luminosities of 166 [mu]b-1 and 5.3 pb-1, respectively, by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Furthermore, measurements are presented as functions of PbPb collision centrality, charged-particle pt, relative azimuth, and radial distance from the jet axis for balanced and unbalanced dijets.

Book excerpt: The collision of highly relativistic nuclei can produce a volume of high energy density which can be used to learn about the behavior of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at extreme conditions, such as those of the universe at times before and during the formation of hadrons out of quarks and gluons. This thesis presents experimental studies of jet-quenching phenomena in PbPb collisions at [square root of]sNN = 2.76 TeV, with a focus on the study of the energy-loss, namely the analysis of correlations of jet pairs as measured by the CMS detector at LHC. The implications of the results are discussed by comparison of simple models with data. It is observed that the geometrical configuration of the dijets and the nuclear collision region plays an important role in the correlations between the jets, and the set of CMS results reviewed can illustrate the dependence of the amount of lost energy on the length of the traversed medium.

Book excerpt: The unification of the Standard Model of physics with the theory of general relativity is one of the most salient problems facing theoretical physicists today. A search is presented for strongly-coupled string theory, a possible resolution to this problem. At an accelerator experiment, evidence for this theory could manifest as a shutting off of all Standard Model processes. This phenomenon is referred to as extinction, beyond some energy threshold related to an extinction scale M. The search presented here utilizes 5.0 inverse femtobarns of data taken in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. These data were taken by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, situated at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Standard Model predicts the formation of collinear streams of particles known as jets, with one of the highest production cross-sections of any process expected in proton-proton collisions. The transverse momentum distribution of all jets in data is constructed, and compared to that expected by the Standard Model, as well as that expected by extinction physics for various values of M. The standard model and extinction hypotheses are expressed in terms of an explicit calculation of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) at next-to-leading order. No significant evidence of an extinction signature is observed, and an upper limit of 3.2 TeV is set on the scale M at 95% C.L.

Book excerpt: Since the human organism is itself an open system, we are naturally curious about the behavior of other open systems with fluxes of matter, energy or information. Of the possible open systems, it is those endowed with many degrees of freedom and strongly deviating from equilibrium that are most challenging. A simple but very significant example of such a system is given by developed turbulence in a continuous medium, where we can discern astonishing features of universality. This two-volume monograph deals with the theory of turbulence viewed as a general physical phenomenon. In addition to vortex hydrodynamic turbulence, it considers various cases of wave turbulence in plasmas, magnets, atmosphere, ocean and space. A sound basis for discussion is provided by the concept of cascade turbulence with relay energy transfer over different scales and modes. We shall show how the initial cascade hypothesis turns into an elegant theory yielding the Kolmogorov spectra of turbulence as exact solutions. We shall describe the further development of the theory discussing stability prob lems and modes of Kolmogorov spectra formation, as well as their matching with sources and sinks. This volume is dedicated to developed wave turbulence in different media.

Book excerpt: The phase structure of particle physics shows up in matter at extremely high densities and/or temperatures as they were reached in the early universe, shortly after the big bang, or in heavy-ion collisions, as they are performed nowadays in laboratory experiments. In contrast to phase transitions of condensed matter physics, the underlying fundamental theories are better known than their macroscopic manifestations in phase transitions. These theories are quantum chromodynamics for the strong interaction part and the electroweak part of the Standard Model for the electroweak interaction. It is their non-Abelian gauge structure that makes it a big challenge to predict the type of phase conversion between phases of different symmetries and different particle contents. The book is about a variety of analytical and numerical tools that are needed to study the phase structure of particle physics. To these belong convergent and asymptotic expansions in strong and weak couplings, dimensional reduction, renormalization group studies, gap equations, Monte Carlo simulations with and without fermions, finite-size and finite-mass scaling analyses, and the approach of effective actions as supplement to first-principle calculations.
