One of these routes is by way of cortico-cortical links, beginning in the primary sensory areas of the cortex, and connecting via a series of synaptic relays to motor or premotor areas. There are also two massive subcortical routes. One of these involves the basal ganglia, the other the cerebellum. This book focuses on current research on the structure and functions of these three pathways and their role in the sensory guidance of movement. Motor psychophysicists have made progress in characterizing the nature of movements such as reaching and grasping, and how such movements are modified by incoming sensory information. Anatomical studies have revealed important new information about the ways in which sensory information is relayed to the basal ganglia and cerebellum. There is now a volume of scanning evidence about the activity of brain areas in humans and recordings from individual neurons in animals during sensory guided movement. This book summarizes much of this recent knowledge and provides a forum for suggesting new avenues for further study. The topics covered also have important implications for understanding the role of these pathways in human disease.

And yet, if we conceive of "seeing" as the ability to generate internal mental representations that may contain visual details, the idea of blind vision becomes a concept subject to investigation. In this book, Zaira Cattaneo and Tomaso Vecchi examine the effects of blindness and other types of visual deficit on the development and functioning of the human cognitive system. Drawing on behavioral and neurophysiological data, Cattaneo and Vecchi analyze research on mental imagery, spatial cognition, and compensatory mechanisms at the sensorial, cognitive, and cortical levels in individuals with complete or profound visual impairment. They find that our brain does not need our eyes to "see." In healthy adults, vision provides an accurate and precise reference by which auditory space can be adaptively adjusted to accomplish distinct goals. The goal of this dissertation was to quantify the behavioral processes that underlie audio-visual (AV) spatial perception. There are two ways vision modifies auditory spatial perception. The first resolves disparities between paired AV targets. When there is a mismatch in location between auditory and visual targets, vision tends to 'capture' auditory perception, biasing the auditory percept toward its visual counterpart. In an experimental environment the spatial limits of visual capture are tested by introducing disparities between auditory and visual targets and measuring the resultant percept. Visual capture was assessed by having subjects either make forced-choice judgments of whether auditory and visual targets emanate from the same location, or localize the auditory target. Results demonstrated that the spatial boundaries of visual capture are sensitive to task objective, and therefore, these methods of assessing visual capture are not equivalent. A second form of AV interaction maintains spatial congruence across the senses. Prolonged exposure to a fixed spatial AV disparity produces recalibration of auditory space to align it with visual perception. Recent results have implied that this effect also occurs after exposure to a single AV disparity, but the relationship between these results remains unclear. Here, experiments demonstrate two superimposed processes: 1) a rapid effect that acts immediately following visual capture but decays within seconds, 2) a slow recalibration that accumulates over thousands of repetitions of a fixed spatial AV disparity. Visual capture was further demonstrated to have distinct properties when localizing the auditory component of an AV disparity when compared to localizing auditory targets presented following an AV disparity. These results demonstrate that visual capture and recalibration act simultaneously but over different time scales to influence auditory spatial perception. Results from these experiments characterize the distinct behavioral processes that alter auditory spatial perception in response to spatial AV disparities. Understanding these behaviors guides investigation into their physiological roots, and the effects of sensory dysfunction on multisensory perception"--Pages vi-[vii].

A survey of the existing auditory-space perception literature suggests that three main types of factors may account for this variability: - physical factors, e.g., acoustical characteristics related to sound-localization cues, - perceptual factors, e.g., sensory/cognitive processing, perceptual learning, multisensory interactions, - and methodological factors, e.g., differences in stimulus presentation methods across studies. However, the extent to which these–and perhaps other, still unidentified—factors actually contribute to the observed variability in spatial hearing across individuals with normal hearing or within special populations (e.g., hearing-impaired listeners) remains largely unknown. Likewise, the role of perceptual learning and multisensory interactions in the emergence of a multimodal but unified representation of “auditory space,” is still an active topic of research. A better characterization and understanding of the determinants of inter-individual variability in spatial hearing, and of its relationship with perceptual learning and multisensory interactions, would have numerous benefits. In particular, it would enhance the design of rehabilitative devices and of human-machine interfaces involving auditory, or multimodal space perception, such as virtual auditory/multimodal displays in aeronautics, or navigational aids for the visually impaired. For this Research Topic, we have considered manuscripts that: - present new methods, or review existing methods, for the study of inter-individual differences; - present new data (or review existing) data, concerning acoustical features relevant for explaining inter-individual differences in sound-localization performance; - present new (or review existing) psychophysical or neurophysiological findings concerning spatial hearing and/or auditory perceptual learning, and/or multisensory interactions in humans (normal or impaired, young or older listeners) or other species; - discuss the influence of inter-individual differences on the design and use of assistive listening devices (rehabilitation) or human-machine interfaces involving spatial hearing or multimodal perception of space (ergonomy).
