Book excerpt: A bold rallying cry for conservative environmental leadership from Newt Gingrich, New York Times bestselling author of Trump and the American Future and March to the Majority. Appealing to America's core conservative readership and defying conventional thinking, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and eminent conservationist Terry L. Maple posit that the values of conservative America are aligned with the principles of conservation and "entrepreneurial environmentalism." Saving the earth is not—and cannot be—a partisan issue. The authors outline a ten-point Contract with the Earth that promotes ingenuity over rhetoric, maintaining that the expansion of "green business," new technologies, and environmental economic incentives will be the defining opportunities for the leaders of the next generation. An inspiring call to action, A Contract with the Earth offers a vision of the future that is both hopeful and achievable.

Book excerpt: Almost 50% of the total area of Austria is forested, and the forests are dominated by commercially valuable stands of Norway spruce ( (Picea abies). The few remaining forests that resemble the natural vegetation composition are located in forest reserves with restricted management. These natural forests are used as reference systems for evaluating silvicultural research on sustainable forest management. Natural forests are expected to have high biodiversity, where the structural richness of the habitat enables complex relationships between fauna, flora, and microflora. They also provide refugia for rare plants and animals found only in natural forest types. Austria had 180 of these forest reserves up to the year 2003. Most of these forests are privately owned, and owners are compensated by the government for loss of income associated with conservation status. The Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forest Ecosystems (MCPFE) has launched a world-wide network of protected forest areas which should cover all major forest types (MCPFE and UNECE/FAO, 2003). The sites selected for our investigation of soil conditions and communities were chosen by vegetation ecologists and soil scientists. The stands have developed under natural competition conditions with no management interventions. All sites were well documented with known forest history. Our set of sites spans gradients of environmental conditions as well as species composition, providing a realistic evaluation of the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors.

Book excerpt: Phenology refers to recurring plant and animal life cycle stages, such as leafing and flowering, maturation of agricultural plants, emergence of insects, and migration of birds. It is also the study of these recurring events, especially their timing and relationships with weather and climate. Phenological phenomena all give a ready measure of the environment as viewed by the associated organism, and are thus ideal indicators of the impact of local and global changes in weather and climate on the earth’s biosphere. Assessing our changing world is a complex task that requires close cooperation from experts in biology, climatology, ecology, geography, oceanography, remote sensing, and other areas. Like its predecessor, this second edition of Phenology is a synthesis of current phenological knowledge, designed as a primer on the field for global change and general scientists, students, and interested members of the public. With updated and new contributions from over fifty phenological experts, covering data collection, current research, methods, and applications, it demonstrates the accomplishments, progress over the last decade, and future potential of phenology as an integrative environmental science.

Traveling with the reader through a maple season, the author describes traditional and modern operations, and the chemistry and physics involved in converting sap to syrup. From "Puttin' up Wood" to "Managing Forests for Sap," author Mike Rechlin blends science with an obvious enjoyment of the pure fun of working in the woods and boiling sap. Whether you're an experienced syrup maker, a backyard hobbyist, a teacher, an inquisitive naturalist, or simply somebody who likes maple syrup, you'll learn something new and intriguing from reading this book.

Book excerpt: Ecocriticism can be described in very general terms as the investigation of the many ways in which culture and the environment are interrelated and conceptualized. Ecocriticism aspires to understand and often to celebrate the natural world, yet it does so indirectly by focusing primarily on written texts. Hailed as one of the most timely and provocative developments in literary and cultural studies of recent decades, it has also been greeted with bewilderment or scepticism by those for whom its aims and methods are unclear. This book seeks to bring into view the development of ecocriticism in the context of Canadian literary studies. Selections include work by Margaret Atwood, Northrop Frye, Sherrill Grace, and Rosemary Sullivan.
