Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Causal Mapping: The CMAP3 Method, by Mauri Laukkanen and Mingde Wang, is an introduction to the conceptual backgrounds of causal (cognitive) mapping and to the typical methods in comparative and composite causal mapping, based on either interview or questionnaire primary data or on secondary documentary data. The discussed CCM research is supported by CMAP3, a freely downloadable (www.uef.fi/cmap3) Windows software platform for CCM studies. The book has three parts. The first discusses the theoretical underpinnings and methodological issues in causal mapping including the target phenomena and different interpretations of causal maps/mapping, the motives for using CCM methods and the criteria of method selection. The second part focuses on the technical aspects of using CMAP3 in typical CCM research. The third part presents three CCM study cases: a classical document-based study; a semi-structured interview-based (SIM) study; and a methodological study comparing SIM with an electronically administered structured hybrid CCM approach. In addition to demonstrating CCM practices, they suggest that different methods produce divergent results and are thus not substitutable. The research task should determine which CCM approach is appropriate. The book will appeal to both academic and professional audiences, in particular to doctoral students and experienced researchers looking for new topics and method approaches, but also to practitioners in fields such as management and organization studies, organizational development, public policy and education, and knowledge management.

Book excerpt: Now available in paperback for the first time, this classic work presents a cognitive-semiotic framework for understanding how maps work as powerful, abstract, and synthetic spatial representations. Explored are the ways in which the many representational choices inherent in mapping interact with information processing and knowledge construction, and how the resulting insights can be used to make informed symbolization and design decisions. A new preface to the paperback edition situates the book within the context of contemporary technologies. As the nature of maps continues to evolve, Alan MacEachren emphasizes the ongoing need to think systematically about the ways people interact with and use spatial information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book we have at hand is the fourth monograph I wrote for Springer Verlag. The previous one named "Self-Organization and Associative Mem ory" (Springer Series in Information Sciences, Volume 8) came out in 1984. Since then the self-organizing neural-network algorithms called SOM and LVQ have become very popular, as can be seen from the many works re viewed in Chap. 9. The new results obtained in the past ten years or so have warranted a new monograph. Over these years I have also answered lots of questions; they have influenced the contents of the present book. I hope it would be of some interest and help to the readers if I now first very briefly describe the various phases that led to my present SOM research, and the reasons underlying each new step. I became interested in neural networks around 1960, but could not in terrupt my graduate studies in physics. After I was appointed Professor of Electronics in 1965, it still took some years to organize teaching at the uni versity. In 1968 - 69 I was on leave at the University of Washington, and D. Gabor had just published his convolution-correlation model of autoasso ciative memory. I noticed immediately that there was something not quite right about it: the capacity was very poor and the inherent noise and crosstalk were intolerable. In 1970 I therefore sugge~ted the auto associative correlation matrix memory model, at the same time as J.A. Anderson and K. Nakano.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedagogic Frailty and Resilience in the University presents a theoretical model and a practical tool to support the professional development of reflective university teachers. It can be used to highlight links to key issues in higher education. Pedagogic frailty exists where the quality of interaction between elements in the evolving teaching environment succumbs to cumulative pressures that eventually inhibit the capacity to develop teaching practice. Indicators of frailty can be observed at different resolutions, from the individual, to the departmental or the institutional. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields who critique the frailty model from the perspectives of their own research. This will help readers to make practical links between established bodies of research literature and the concept of frailty, and to form a coherent and integrated view of higher education. This can then be explored and developed by individuals, departments or institutions to inform and evaluate their own enhancement programmes. This may support the development of greater resilience to the demands of the teaching environment. In comparison with other commonly used terms, we have found that the term ‘frailty’ has improved resonance with the experiences of colleagues across the disciplines in higher education, and elicits a personal (sometimes emotional) response to their professional situation that encourages positive dialogue, debate and reflection that may lead to the enhancement of university teaching. This book offers a particular route through the fractured discourses of higher education pedagogy, creating a coherent and cohesive perspective of the field that may illuminate the experiences and observations of colleagues within the profession. “If we are to realise the promise of higher education ... we will need the concepts, methods, and reflections contained in this book.” – Robert R. Hoffman
