Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than a thousand new entries and more than 2,300 word-frequency ratios, the magisterial fourth edition of this book-now renamed Garner's Modern English Usage (GMEU)-reflects usage lexicography at its finest. Garner explains the nuances of grammar and vocabulary with thoroughness, finesse, and wit. He discourages whatever is slovenly, pretentious, or pedantic. GMEU is the liveliest and most compulsively readable reference work for writers of our time. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid writing. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound "purists" who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The judgments here are backed up not just by a lifetime of study but also by an empirical grounding in the largest linguistic corpus ever available. In this fourth edition, Garner has made extensive use of corpus linguistics to include ratios of standard terms as compared against variants in modern print sources. No other resource provides as comprehensive, reliable, and empirical a guide to current English usage. For all concerned with writing and editing, GMEU will prove invaluable as a desk reference. Garner illustrates with actual examples, cited with chapter and verse, all the linguistic blunders that modern writers and speakers are prone to, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. No matter how knowledgeable you may already be, you're sure to learn from every single page of this book.

Book Synopsis Walking the Forest with Chico Mendes by : Gomercindo Rodrigues
Download or read book Walking the Forest with Chico Mendes written by Gomercindo Rodrigues and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-03-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close associate of Chico Mendes, Gomercindo Rodrigues witnessed the struggle between Brazil's rubber tappers and local ranchers—a struggle that led to the murder of Mendes. Rodrigues's memoir of his years with Mendes has never before been translated into English from the Portuguese. Now, Walking the Forest with Chico Mendes makes this important work available to new audiences, capturing the events and trends that shaped the lives of both men and the fragile system of public security and justice within which they lived and worked. In a rare primary account of the celebrated labor organizer, Rodrigues chronicles Mendes's innovative proposals as the Amazon faced wholesale deforestation. As a labor unionist and an environmentalist, Mendes believed that rain forests could be preserved without ruining the lives of workers, and that destroying forests to make way for cattle pastures threatened humanity in the long run. Walking the Forest with Chico Mendes also brings to light the unexplained and uninvestigated events surrounding Mendes's murder. Although many historians have written about the plantation systems of nineteenth-century Brazil, few eyewitnesses have captured the rich rural history of the twentieth century with such an intricate knowledge of history and folklore as Rodrigues.
Book Synopsis Minding the Earth, Mending the World by : Susan Murphy
Download or read book Minding the Earth, Mending the World written by Susan Murphy and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shunryu Suzuki Roshi founded the San Francisco Zen Center in 1962, and after fifty years we have seen a fine group of Zen masters trained in the west take up the mantle and extend the practice of Zen in ways that might have been hard to imagine in those first early years. Susan Murphy, one of Robert Aitken's students and dharma heirs, is one of the finest in this group of young Zen teachers. She is also a fine writer, and following on the teaching of her Roshi she has engaged her spiritual work in the ordinary world, dealing with the practice of daily life and with the struggles of all beings. We know that our earth is in crisis, but is the situation beyond repair? Are we on a path of planetary disaster where the only proper response is to prepare for our melancholic dystopian future? Is there a way out of our suspicious cynicism? In the tradition of Thomas Berry, using this spiritual opportunity to change the very nature of our crisis, Susan Murphy offers a profound message, subtly presented with clarity and assurance, showing that engaged Buddhism provides a possible path to the necessary repair and healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to invite God to step in and break the cycle of dysfunction Elizabeth Oates is no stranger to a dysfunctional family. She may look like the quintessential soccer mom now, but her childhood was full of uncertainty, abandonment, and many very dark days. Without a positive role model, an emotionally stable family member, or a consistent community, she had to forge her way ahead just to survive day to day. It wasn't until she was preparing for a family of her own that she began to learn the lessons that would lead to a more hopeful future for herself, her husband, and her children. Now she shares those lessons with other women struggling to create healthy families despite their own unhealthy family foundations. Through introspective and probing questions, Mending Broken Branches guides the reader to accept her past, understand her present, and find a vision for her future. The interactive design includes space to work through the journaling prompts provided, as well as extra-wide margins for notes of reflection while reading. With the gentle voice of a trusted mentor, Elizabeth encourages and equips women to cultivate strong, flourishing, God-honoring lives, and to break the cycle of dysfunction.
Book Synopsis Living With A Lighter Load by : Susan Whisnand
Download or read book Living With A Lighter Load written by Susan Whisnand and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-01-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Living with a Lighter Load is the same as reading my diary. The kind of diary that has a lock and key and no one is allowed to see what is inside. But there isn’t a lock and key on this book. I have removed them, and I am inviting you to peek inside and have a look at my personal story. The story of my life isn’t profound, tragic, or extraordinary. It is not something to make a big deal over. But, it’s underneath the events of my story that reveal the diary-like emotions and thoughts that are very private to me. It’s where my frustration from struggles are experienced, heart piercing pain of loss is felt, defeat of mistakes overwhelms, shame from sin takes over, fear from a bad experience is absorbed, and sadness from disappointment sinks in. It’s these emotions and thoughts of mine that I reveal and share with you. Why do I reveal what is underneath the experiences of my life? Because I have learned a life lesson that is worth getting out of my diary and into an open book. I have learned that I don’t have to lug the heavy weight that the struggles of life put upon my emotions and thoughts. I have learned to live with a lighter load and how to keep it light. Since I am no longer straining to pull the weight, I have wider eyes to see more of life’s abundance and richness. And what I see makes me too happy to keep stored in my diary and all to myself. - Sue Marvin -------- ---------
Download or read book The Mending written by R. R. Emmett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Bob and Peggy are both devastated by the loss of their loved one, through the strength of her faith and trust in God Peggy is able to accept the loss by stating her belief that the Lord will someday let her know the reason. In contrast Bob decries that reasoning, and openly begins to express his denial that a supreme being would allow a child so deeply loved by all the members of his family to suffer and die. Peggy is offended by Bobs outrage and demands he stop talking about his anger with God in front of her and the children, or it will be the end of their marriage. Bob agrees to her demands, continues to provide for the family but his arrogance leads to his leaving the security of one job for the self satisfaction he derives from solving others problems and his own desires. It is only through Peggys refusal to move to Bobs newest location that Bob promises to accept a counseling program. The program they select brings Bob to the awareness that he is not the person he really wishes to be.
