Book Synopsis Byzantium After Byzantium by : Nicolae Iorga
Download or read book Byzantium After Byzantium written by Nicolae Iorga and published by Center For Romanian Studies. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in French in 1935, the author's formula Byzantium after Byzantium defines several centuries of world history. Iorga points out the great contributions of Byzantine civilization to the Western world, especially during the Renaissance. He demonstrates that Byzantium survived through its people and local autonomies, as well as through its exiles--clerics, scholars, merchants, and political officials. One of the most important expressions of this was found in the Romanian principalities where Greeks from the Phanar district of Istanbul played a major role in Romanian political life, defining an entire period of Romanian history--the Phanariot Period. They continued the Byzantine ideas, aspirations, education, and way of life. All of this allows us to speak of a Byzantium after Byzantium.

Book excerpt: Expelled from Spain in 1492 by the Alhambra Decree, the Sephardic Jews of the Iberic peninsula had to seek other havens. The discovery of the New World was a golden opportunity that led them to settle in Hispaniola. Although they contributed to the prosperity of Saint-Domingue, the French crown edited discriminative laws against the Jews of de Pearl of the Antilles. The French Revolution of 1789 was a major turning point for the status of the Jewish Nation of Saint-Domingue, but the slaves' revolt of 1791 forced it once again to move abroad for the sake of their lives. After 1804, other Jewish families from the surrounding Islands (Curacao, Jamaica, St Thomas) settled in the New Republic on Haiti, led by the vast trading network of the Jewish Nation in America. The Arab migration of the end of the 19th century revived the Jewish community of Haiti that was menaced of extinction by deculturation. During the Shoah, the Haitian government saved the lives of hundreds of Jews from Europe by granting them visas and even the Haitian nationality. So many historical ties between the Jewish people and Haiti, a country with no synagogue or Jewish town.

Download or read book Tectonic Shifts written by Mark Schuller and published by Kumarian Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti’s capital on January 12, 2010 will be remembered as one of the world’s deadliest disasters. The earthquake was a tragedy that gripped the nation-and the world. But as a disaster it also magnified the social ills that have beset this island nation that sits squarely in the United States’ diplomatic and geopolitical shadow. The quake exposed centuries of underdevelopment, misguided economic policies, and foreign aid interventions that have contributed to rampant inequality and social exclusion in Haiti. Tectonic Shiftsoffers a diverse on-the-ground set of perspectives about Haiti’s cataclysmic earthquake and the aftermath that left more than 1.5 million individuals homeless. Following a critical analysis of Haiti’s heightened vulnerability as a result of centuries of foreign policy and most recently neoliberal economic policies, this book addresses a range of contemporary realities, foreign impositions, and political changes that occurred during the relief and reconstruction periods. Analysis of these realities offers tools for engaged, principled reflection and action. Essays by scholars, journalists, activists, and Haitians still on the island and those in the Diaspora highlight the many struggles that the Haitian people face today, providing lessons not only for those impacted and involved in relief, but for people engaged in struggles for justice and transformation in other parts of the world.
