Book Synopsis Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of Clonal Plants by : Josef F. Stuefer
Download or read book Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of Clonal Plants written by Josef F. Stuefer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spontaneous self-cloning or clonality is a widespread phenomenon in the plant kingdom, and has a wide array of ecological and evolutionary implications. This volume is the outcome of an international workshop on clonal plant biology aimed at illustrating current progress and recent developments in the scientific study of clonality in plants. The first section of this book includes a collection of original research articles which demonstrate the wide variety of approaches and scientific challenges linked to clonality in plants. The topics covered in this section include ecological and evolutionary implications of sexual versus asexual propagation, including life-history evolution and sex-ratio dynamics, the importance of internal resource transport and remobilization of storage products for the invasiveness and competitiveness of clonal plants, a survey of clonal growth forms in grassland communities, and studies on the interactions between clonal plants and animals and fungi. The approaches used range from experimental studies on a broad variety of systems to mathematical modeling of clonal growth and its consequences. The second part features discussion and review papers on a diverse array of subjects, ranging from developmental considerations of clonality, principles of selection and evolution in clonal plants, a survey of clonality in algae, to potential implications of clonality for plant mating, and beyond. This part of the volume aims at presenting novel ideas and hypotheses, and at summarizing existing knowledge in previously under-researched areas, thereby providing directions for future research initiatives. This book captures ongoing cutting-edge research in the field of clonal plant ecology and evolution. It is directed to anyone from the undergraduate to specialist level who is interested in the biology of the intriguing phenomenon of asexual propagation in plants.

Book Synopsis Biological invaders in inland waters: Profiles, distribution, and threats by : Francesca Gherardi
Download or read book Biological invaders in inland waters: Profiles, distribution, and threats written by Francesca Gherardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive species have come to dominate 3% of the Earth’s ice-free surface, constituting one of the most serious ecological and economic threats of the new millennium, and freshwater systems are particularly vulnerable. This book examines the identity, distribution, and impact of freshwater non-indigenous species and the dynamics of their invasion. It focuses on old and new invaders and provides a starting point for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the third international workshop on the subject (U. of Florence, 1997), come 18 papers reviewing the issue of alien crayfish decimating the relatively few native species in European freshwater environments. In a historical and taxonomic context, the initial paper explains why such homogenizatio
Book Synopsis Principles and Practices in Plant Ecology by : Inderjit
Download or read book Principles and Practices in Plant Ecology written by Inderjit and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-03-12 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles and Practices in Plant Ecology: Allelochemical Interactions provides insights and details recent progress about allelochemical research from the ecosystem standpoint. Research on chemical ecology of allelochemicals in the last three decades has established this field as a mature science that interrelates the research of biologists, weed and crop scientists, agronomists, natural product chemists, microbiologists, ecologists, soil scientists, and plant physiologists and pathologists. This book demonstrates how the influence of allelochemicals on the various components of an ecosystem-including soil microbial ecology, soil nutrients, and physical, chemical, and biological soil factors-may affect growth, distribution, and survival of plant species. Internationally renowned exper†s discuss how a better understanding of allelochemical phenomena can lead to true sustainable agriculture.

Book Synopsis The economics of biological invasions by : Charles Perrings, Silvana Dalmazzone, Mark Herbert Williamson
Download or read book The economics of biological invasions written by Charles Perrings, Silvana Dalmazzone, Mark Herbert Williamson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000-08-25 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An interesting book catering perhaps for a more specific audience. It does however provide a somewhat new view of the problems of the field of biological invasions and is worth the effort.' - Ann Sundqvist, M2 Best Books 'Once again, Charles Perrings and colleagues have broken new ground by applying economic and ecological analysis to the very real problem of biological invasions. This is path-breaking work in what promises to be a new sub-discipline within environmental economics.' - David Pearce, University College London, UK Biological invasions - the introduction of living organisms beyond their original range - are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss. They are a major threat to human health and a source of pests and pathogens in the world's farms, forests and fisheries. The growth of international trade and travel means that more species are being introduced to more places than ever before. This book represents the first concerted effort to understand the economic causes and consequences of biological invasions. The volume discusses the theoretical and methodological issues raised by invasion, including control strategies, modelling options, and a study of the economic, institutional and policy conditions that predispose countries to biological invasions. Also included are case studies of fisheries, agricultural systems, tropical forests and protected areas affected by invasive species in locations such as the Black Sea, Australia and Africa, and an evaluation of control programmes.
