Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook in Woodwork and Carpentry, for Teachers and Normal Schools This series consists of five volumes, four of which are intended as textbooks for pupils in manual-training, industrial, trade, technical, or normal schools. The fifth book of the series, the "Handbook in Woodwork and Carpentry," is for the use of teachers and of normal students who expect to teach the subjects treated in the other four volumes. Of the pupils' volumes, the first two, "Elements of Woodwork" and "Elements of Construction," are adapted to the needs of students in manual-training schools, or in any institution in which elementary woodwork is taught, whether as purely educational handwork, or as preparatory to a high, or trade, school course in carpentry or vocational training. The volumes "Constructive Carpentry" and "Inside Finishing" are planned with special reference to the students of technical, industrial, or trade schools, who have passed through the work of the first two volumes, or their equivalent. The subjects treated are those which will be of greatest value to both the prospective and the finished workman. For the many teachers who are obliged to follow a required course, but who are allowed to introduce supplementary or optional models under certain conditions, and for others who have more liberty and are able to make such changes as they see fit, this series will be found perfectly adaptable, regardless of the grades taught. To accomplish this, the material has been arranged by topics, which may be used by the teacher irrespective of the sequence, as each topic has to the greatest extent possible been treated independently. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handcraft in Wood and Metal: A Handbook of Training in Their Practical Working for Teachers, Students,& Craftsmen In preparing this work the authors have endeavoured to show the possibilities of craftwork as an educational subject, and to briefly indicate its cultural aspects. One of the prejudices against handcraft or so-called "manual work" has been that it had more value from a physical than an educational or cultural standpoint, with the result that "handcraft" in schools has too frequently been classed as "carpentry", The authors think that lessons based upon the historical phases of craftwork, particularly in the development of types of construction in furniture and metalwork, and the growth of tools from prehistoric times, together with the study of simple applied art as displayed in historic work, will do much to increase the value of handcraft in schools. Whilst the work has been prepared primarily for the teacher, the aim has been to render treatment of the subject such as to make the work of value and interest to the craftsman, and a useful guide for the pupil or student. As an aid to class teachers in helping on a technical side in central schools, they hope it will find a place among the books pertaining to craft and general education. It is hoped further that the work will be regarded as a collection of suggestions and data, rather than an attempt to produce a series of models. The authors believe that at least one aspect of handcraft has been almost entirely neglected in the past, i.e. the artistic side; and, whilst not claiming any special merit for the design of the models dealt with, they have endeavoured to embody some artistic merit in the designs, and have tabooed the meaningless joints and collection of joints which have only a limited mechanical value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Teachers: A Course in Manual Training for Grammar Schools With Illustrations This hand-book is not intended as a manual for self-instruction, it is simply an arrangement of facts and suggestions relating to the tools and exercises involved in this series of models, to supplement notes taken by the pupil-teacher, which, it is hoped, may be of some assistance to the teacher in her efforts to encourage habits of industry and observation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Woodwork His manual is designed as a guide to manual training teachers who believe that the object of education is the development of the child morally and mentally rather than the acquisition 1 of skill, which so often is made the dominant feature ln manual training. Not that the train 5 ing to acquire skill should be neglected, but it should not be fostered at the expense of the child's broad understanding of nature and nature's laws. N 0 set of models can express the manual training idea, nor can any definite course of work be applicable to all the diverse conditions to be met with in one city, or even in one school; consequently, the exercises are arranged merely as a basis from which to work. The fact that a variety of materials is used aids in bringing the work into closer relation with that of the grade teacher. This relationship tends to instill life into the work of the shop, which should be considered as a school laboratory where the work of the classroom is to be more fully developed. The emphasis placed on the combination of materials gives a broader view of the subject of man ual training. It broadens the child's horizon so that he is capable of appreciating the unusual rather than the more commonplace problems so often imposed on pupils of manual training. The problems suggested are presented in such a way that the trained teacher will have no difficulty to understand their construction. The fact that so much detail is omitted gives the teacher an opportunity to present the detailed operations in his own way, thus making the work more individual. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training for Common Schools: An Organized Course in Wood-Working In preparing this book on "Manual Training" the author has attempted to be thorough rather than complete. No attempt has been made to add anything new to the subject-matter, but only to arrange well-known facts so that they will offer as systematic and complete a course of study as is offered in any of the older organized courses. The arrangement of the text as herein presented is the direct result of five years' teaching the subject of wood-working to beginning classes. This class work was preceded by a number of years of shop work as a journeyman machinist and a factory foreman, as well as by a four years' college course in science and engineering. Help in preparing the text has been gleaned from so many fields that it would be impossible to make direct mention of all who have given valuable assistance. The author wishes, however, to acknowledge the aid given by Mr. Charles E. Emmerich, principal of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, and Mr. Paul W. Covert, head of the manual training department, who have allowed such freedom in the conduct of classes that it has been possible to make all parts of the work measure up to a class-room test. Acknowledgment is due Mr. Otto Stark, head of the art department of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, for his earnest and careful criticism of the models, drawings, and photographs. This criticism has added much to the value of the text. The final drawings from which the cuts were executed were made by Mr. Edward Stark, of Indianapolis.
