Este libro explora aspectos que nunca antes habían sido tocados en una misma obra. En sus investigaciones, el autor se lanza más allá del campo del diseño en visitas a la psicología, la oftalmología, la optometría, la paleografía y otras materias. Comienza con un análisis del texto como medio de comunicación; luego nos cuenta cómo fueron los comienzos de la imprenta, para entrar enseguida a analizar los diversos sistemas de medidas tipográficas. Sigue con una exposición sobre lo que se sabe y lo que se ignora del proceso de la lectura y la legibilidad. La tercera parte está dedicada a la tipología: el estudio de las letras como moldes de imprenta, sus formas y variaciones, sus transformaciones a lo largo de historia. Lo que sigue se dedica al papel, los formatos, la diagramación y las ilustraciones; también introduce una manera novedosa y útil de abordar los proyectos editoriales. La quinta parte cubre los principales aspectos de la ortografía y la ortotipografía, y cierra con una sección sobre barbarismos tipográficos. El penúltimo capítulo es un diccionario de signos tipográficos, y el último, una descripción de las partes de los libros. Toda la obra está salpicada de referencias históricas, ilustraciones, citas de autores fundamentales, anécdotas y comentarios, críticas y toques de humor. Es un libro hecho con pasión, cocinado lentamente.
