Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Unitarian Belief As Unitarians have no creed, and as their union Is one of sympathy and co-operation, and not of formulas, no one among them has any right to define the views of others. A Manual such as this is meant simply to express what, in the opinion of the writer, is the general belief of the majority of Unitarians. Every proposition contained in it is liable to discussion, correction, and revision. No one is bound by it; and it does not attempt to limit thought, but rather to stimulate and rouse inquiry. It is intended to be made the theme of discussion, and to help the teacher of the class in the Sunday-school, by furnishing, for himself and his pupils, topics for examination. To this end questions are added at the close of each Lesson, and references are given to passages of Scripture. The Questions on each Lesson have been prepared by Mrs. Kate Gannett Wells. They follow the text, and also contain suggestions for conversation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ... (b) Because the doctrine of the Trinity is nowhere plainly taught in the New Testament. This is admitted by many candid Trinitarians. Thus, Neander, a Trinitarian, says of this doctrine: "It is expressly held forth in no one particular passage of the New Testament." (Church History, Torrey's translation, vol. i. p. 572.) Many such testimonies might be adduced. (c) Because the texts quoted in support of the Trinity are inadequate or irrelevant. The famous text of the Three Witnesses has been shown so convincingly to be an interpolation, that it has been rejected by most Trinitarians and omitted in the Revised Version. The Baptismal Formula (Matt, xxviii. 19) and the Benediction (2 Cor. xiii. 14) are passages often brought forward as proofs of the Trinity. But in neither of them is it stated that the Son is God, or that the Holy Spirit is a person, or that these three are the one supreme God. That these passages should be constantly quoted as proofs of the doctrine of the Trinity shows that no real proof-texts of the doctrine can be found in the New Testament. They may seem to imply it to one who already believes that doctrine; but to those who do not already believe it they appear as a summary of the truth which proceeds from the Father, the only true God, --through Jesus Christ, his holy child and the mediator of his love, --and made part of the soul and life by the inward influence of the Divine Spirit. (d) Because there are many texts in the New Testament plainly opposed to the Church doctrine of the Trinity. Such are the texts in which the Father is called the one or only God; which could not be said if the Son is also God, and the Holy Spirit God. 1 Cor. viii. 5, 6: "For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New Unitarian Belief The chapters of this book, with the exception of the first and last, were written for my Brooklyn congregation as a series of monthly lecture sermons during the season extending from November, 1893, to May, 1894. The interest which they awakened and the satisfaction which they gave have seemed to justify their publication, and I have thought that a book containing them might mark appropriately the conclusion of my thirtieth year with a people whose generous loyalty to me has been more beau tiful than words can say. While none of the chap ters is as good as I could wish, some of them, I know, are not so good as others, because of slacker health and spirits and more serious interruptions than the common run. But I have gone over them all with care, and tried to better what I could not radically change. In matters of pure fact I have sought to follow the most excellent authorities, verifying every particular of which I had any doubt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the Unitarian Belief: With a Letter to an Unitarian Friend on the Lord's Supper The Pilgrim's Progress has probably done more than any other uninspired book to guide Christians to heaven. One great cause of its usefulness is its allegorical manner, which ren ders it most attractive to children so that the nature, dangers, and all the peculiarities of a religious life are treasured in their memories, long before they have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the Pilgrim's hope. We remember that when we were young, he was the envy of the rest of the children, who had been before hand with them in secreting Pilgrim's Progress on Saturday afternoon, that he might have it for his Sunday's reading. - The Rise and Prog ress, the Guide to Christ, the Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ, and other books of the like nature, are of immense importance to the church, in forming the religious character of young Christians, and bringing many sons and daughters to her privileges in this world, and hereafter to glory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of Unitarians The second difficulty to which I referred meets us when we attempt to make our definition of Unitarian theology a distinctive one. There is, I suppose, no body of Christians that does not contain many advanced thinkers. If, by some irresistible call, all those in the various Christian denominations, and outside of them, who hold views similar to those which Unitarians cher ish as their own, should come forth, and range themselves under a common banner, great would be the multitude. These beliefs are found masquerading under strange names. Some of the treatises, for instance, on the doc trine of the Trinity put forth by one theologian and another of orthodox sects, are read by Unitarians with some surprise. When they have brushed away the obscurities that result from the use of technical phrases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Studies in Religion an Introduction to Unitarianism Young people should also know their own church and faith well: this is described in the last part. For this some history of the Unitarian Church is given, in order that one may get his bearings and appreciate the sources and the cost. Some plain and positive statements of belief are given; and then there are a few chapters devoted to the working forces of the church. It is hoped that in this way the young people will be prepared for appreciative understanding and for efficient work in their church. Because we have no formula of faith; no system of doo trines; no list of articles prescribed by pope, bishops, General Assembly, or other human authority, which every one must profess to believe before he can be admitted to member ship in our church, there are those who allege that we Unitarians have no faith; that we believe nothing, or that each one believes what he pleases.
