Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sculpture and the Museum is the first in-depth examination of the varying roles and meanings assigned to sculpture in museums and galleries during the modern period, from neo-classical to contemporary art practice. It considers a rich array of curatorial strategies and settings in order to examine the many reasons why sculpture has enjoyed a position of such considerable importance - and complexity - within the institutional framework of the museum and how changes to the museum have altered, in turn, the ways that we perceive the sculpture within it. In particular, the contributors consider the complex issue of how best to display sculpture across different periods and according to varying curatorial philosophies. Sculptors discussed include Canova, Rodin, Henry Moore, Flaxman and contemporary artists such as Rebecca Horn, Rachel Whiteread, Mark Dion and Olafur Eliasson, with a variety of museums in America, Canada and Europe presented as case studies. Underlying all of these discussions is a concern to chart the critical importance of the acquisition, placement and display of sculpture in museums and to explore the importance of sculptures as a forum for the expression of programmatic statements of power, prestige and the museum's own sense of itself in relation to its audiences and its broader institutional aspirations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum of Fine Arts Boston: Manual of Italian Renaissance Sculpture One of the wider problems of the history of fine art is that of its intermittent development. Why has no sculptor of the foremost rank appeared in Italy since Michel Angelo, and why, when Michel Angelo lived, was Raphael also living? May genius be a matter of the heredity of a whole people, or is it occasion only that is lacking in times of artistic depression? Why should not art flourish with a measurable continuity? Why should it always blossom and decay? Be the cause what it may the works of sculpture of which the casts here described are reproductions belong exclusively to a short period in the history of Italy; nor is it an arbitrary choice that has confined them to this period, but the fact that sculptures of equal merit were not produced there before and have not been produced there since. The ruder art of the eleventh and twelfth centuries in both northern and southern Italy was suddenly succeeded during the thirteenth by work far higher in quality both of skill and fancy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are taught to believe in originals. In art and architecture in particular, original objects vouch for authenticity, value, and truth, and require our protection and preservation. The nineteenth century, however, saw this issue differently. In a culture of reproduction, plaster casts of building fragments and architectural features were sold throughout Europe and America and proudly displayed in leading museums. The first comprehensive history of these full-scale replicas, Plaster Monuments examines how they were produced, marketed, sold, and displayed, and how their significance can be understood today. Plaster Monuments unsettles conventional thinking about copies and originals. As Mari Lending shows, the casts were used to restore wholeness to buildings that in reality lay in ruin, or to isolate specific features of monuments to illustrate what was typical of a particular building, style, or era. Arranged in galleries and published in exhibition catalogues, these often enormous objects were staged to suggest the sweep of history, synthesizing structures from vastly different regions and time periods into coherent narratives. While architectural plaster casts fell out of fashion after World War I, Lending brings the story into the twentieth century, showing how Paul Rudolph incorporated historical casts into the design for the Yale Art and Architecture building, completed in 1963. Drawing from a broad archive of models, exhibitions, catalogues, and writings from architects, explorers, archaeologists, curators, novelists, and artists, Plaster Monuments tells the fascinating story of a premodernist aesthetic and presents a new way of thinking about history’s artifacts.

Book excerpt: Pushing the Boundaries of Historia collects together 20 chapters, whose coverage extends from the prehistory of Greece through early Christianity in the Roman Empire to the reception of classical texts by contemporary playwrights and poets. The essays range beyond Greece and Rome to the ancient realms of Persia and China and explore a vast array of ancient authors – Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, Euripides, Vergil, Ovid, Livy, and Tacitus. Written by philologists, historians, epigraphers, palaeographers, archaeologists, and art historians, it brings together the best of old and new traditions of classical study, from senior emeritus faculty with established records of scholarly productivity, to the newest generation of classics and archaeology professors. What draws together the disparate strands of academic inquiry found in these pages is a passion for understanding how the lessons of the world of the ancient Greeks, Romans, and their still lamentably understudied neighbors, can offer commentary on the contemporary world.
