Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Readers interested in bulk purchases are invited to contact us directly to enquire about our tailored bulk rates.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory and Field Manual of Botany The authors fully recognize the fact that no set Of directions of only moderate fullness can tell the student all that he needs to know about choice Of material, apparatus, and manipulation. It is assumed that much is left to be explained by the instructor, and constant mention is made Of general and special laboratory guides which may be consulted for needed details. The student in the laboratory is not to consider himself as merely the corroborator Of facts already ascertained; he is to interrogate mainly not the instructor, not the manual, but the plant itself. The directions here given are, therefore, for the most part suggestions on methods Of procedure and indications as to the plants or parts Of plants in which to look for desired information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Experimental Botany There is something in an experiment which appeals to the mind of the young. The innate desire to find out what is in a toy, how it works, and why various things happen, is largely responsible for this. Chemistry and physics owe their great popularity to the fact that they have been taught by experiment. Zoology and botany have always been less popular because they have often been taught without experimentation. In the days when morphology was the summum bonum of botanical study, there could be small room for experiment But in these later years, when the science has been taught more along physiological lines, the use of experiment has come into more general vogue. It is the purpose of this little book to teach botany by experiment. Plants yield themselves very readily to experiment. Being alive, they respond to all external influences most admirably, and there is no reason why such work with plants should not prove as interesting and as useful as similar exercises with levers, lenses, vibrating pendulums, and cords. It is hoped that something may be found in this book which will remedy the inadequacy which exists in the laboratory instruction of many schools. The work is not entirely physiological in character, but it has been thought wise to present the morphological part also in the form of experiments. Here, in contrast with the Thallo phytes and Bryophytes, the ordinary form of the plant is the sporophyte. The alternation of generations is sharp. The spore develops into a at aggregate of cells called the prothallium, which resembles in function the protonema of the Bryophytes. The prothallium is the gametophyte. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of High School Botany The present work is intended solely as a laboratory guide in connection with lectures or a text-book. The matter has, in consequence, been presented in the briefest and most compact form consistent with this purpose. The aim is to put the student to work quickly and to keep him at work intelligently. Ex planation has been added only when it seemed essen tial to the proper handling of the laboratory work. The material and the teacher have been regarded as the two important facts in the work. The laboratory directions, it is hoped, will bring the student into direct contact with the material, and will relieve the teacher of a large amount of drudgery, thus giving him time for real teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Botany, Vol. 1 The various bodies which are situated on the surface of the earth, or combined so as to form its substance, are naturally arranged, both by the common observer and scientific investi gator, in three great divisions, called, respectively, the Animal, Vegetable, and Mineral Kingdoms and as those comprised in the two former are possessed of life, they form the Organic crea tion; while those of the latter, not being endowed with life, constitute the Inorganic creation. It is our province in this work to treat of the lower members of the organic world, called Plants or Vegetables. The science which has this for its object is termed Botany, from the Greek word Bordun, signifying herb or grass. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Plant Physiology The appreciation shown toward the translation of Oels' Pflanzenphysiologische Versuche prepared by the present writer, together with the comments and suggestions from laboratories in which it has been used, has led to the preparation of this manual, which it is hoped will conform somewhat more nearly to the needs of American students. The general form of Oels' manual has been retained, and many cuts from the translation and a few paragraphs of the text have been repeated here without indication of their origin. Only the more important and better established portions of the subject are treated, and these in the manner already in general use. With the rapid advance of investigation it is next to impossible that an elementary' laboratory manual should include the latest results, especially when the essential points of many of them may yet be in controversy and need the critical treatment which is certainly not within the province of a work of this character. In the hands of an instructor in touch with current botanical thought, such deficiencies are easily supplied. In the interests of precision, the term "assimilation" is here used exclusively to denote a general function of protoplasm, while the term "photosynthesis," which was introduced into the translation of Oels' manual (Preface and page 30), is adopted to signify the special process of forming carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. The author is indebted to Mr. R. N. Day and Miss J. E. Tilden for the demonstration and drawing for Figure 32. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany In order to make the study of botany more effective under the first head, it seems best to bring the student into imme diate contact with the object itself, in the laboratory; and not only that, but to avoid interposing apparatus, as far as possible, between the student and the object to be studied. For this purpose, the writer has practically confined his attention to the larger plants. Desiring also to cultivate, as far as possible, the ability to draw correct inferences from exact observations, the writer has deemed it best to consider the subject from a somewhat different point of view from that usually adopted, and has attempted to make the morphological study bear fruit in this direction. The great difficulty in most laboratory work is to make the students realize the significance of the morphological details. They may observe accurately and record their observations carefully, but what of that? The physiological significance is overlooked - even in many cases where experiments are used to illustrate physiological phenomena. That the plant is a living thing, is a fact that must be borne actively in mind, both by teacher and by student. The plant must obtain the materials for its support, and to do this it must compete with other plants; it must protect itself against or seek the aid of animals it must obtain the energy and materials to reproduce its kind, and endeavor to place its offspring where they may have a proper chance for development; and, destitute of a mind as it is, it exercises an ingenuity, so to speak, that is of no mean order. We must, then, think of the plant as a living, working, struggling being with a single object in life, viz. To reproduce its kind and every variation in structure, be it great or little, is to be examined to determine, if possible, its use or history. The student must actually see as much as possible of what is here brought to his notice. The book simply marshals in logical order the objects to be studied. No doubt some thing may be learned by a simple consecutive reading of the paragraphs of the book, but the young botanist should not be content to obtain all his facts at second hand; he must see with his own eyes all that may be seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physics: A Manual of Experimental Study for High Schools The teacher may grant the comparatively small result which is obtained from the study of physics by the method of lectures and recitations; but he will immediately ask, How can we obtain the time for laboratory work in physics - crowded as we are with so many studies? Moreover, the subject of physics is unlike that of chemistry of botany. In these subjects the cost of the apparatus and mate rial is comparatively small. Each student can have his own tubes, his own reagents, and his own mi croscope. In physics it is very different. The'ap paratus is expensive. A spectroscope, for instance, would cost nearly as much as the entire apparatus in a chemical laboratory. These are strong objec tions, and need careful consideration. The time, however, which is now given to recitation from text-books could at least be devoted to laboratory work; and the lectures could be reduced in num ber and only given to direct the students in their laboratory work. More can be done with cheap apparatus than is generally supposed. It is one of the objects of my treatise to show this.
