Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trustworthy information about career assessment instruments and their value for career counseling is difficult to obtain. This text contains information and reviews of a wide range of assessment instruments. The decisions as to what instruments to include for review were based on input from an advisory committee, a review of the literature and of publisher catalogues, and the results of a survey of users. The principles underlying the decisions to select instruments for review included selecting previously reviewed instrument that have undergone extensive revisions or update, new instruments that appear to have promise of extensive use, instruments that could be used by employers to make hiring or advancement decisions, and instruments with proven utility for persons with disabilities of disadvantages. Fifty-two instruments in forty-nine test reviews comprise the heart of this volume. These are divided into six categories: Comprehensive Aptitude/Achievement and Companion Measures; Interest; Values and Satisfaction; Career Development/Maturity; Personality; and Instruments for Disabled and Disadvantaged Populations. Reviews begin with publisher-provided information, followed by a brief critical review of the instrument's strengths and limitations. Also provided is practical information which potential users can refer to in order to gauge the usefulness of an instrument. (RJM)

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Career Studies brings together, for the first time in a single work, a comprehensive scholarly treatment of the major topics within the growing field of career studies. Drawing on the expertise of leading international scholars in each area of career studies, editors Hugh Gunz and Maury Peiperl have assembled a consummate set of writings, defining the field with a breadth of coverage and integration of topics not found elsewhere. From a view of the history of the field and a map of its elements to a set of essays about the future of careers and work, this volume provides the most complete reference available on the role of work careers in individual lives, institutions, and industries. Key Features • Offers a comprehensive history and structure of the field: Building on previous work done in the discipline, the editors and contributors take a fresh look at the origins and current structure of career studies. • Presents the most complete review of research available: An unparalleled set of prominent global contributors describes the state of work in their areas of expertise as well as offering a glimpse at future trends. • Extends subject area knowledge to other disciplines: By linking career studies to a wider set of disciplines through critical essays, this volume thoroughly explores future directions for career research, policy, and practice. • Includes an endorsement and critical comments on the state of the field: Edgar H. Schein, widely acknowledged as a seminal contributor to the modern field of career studies, provides a Foreword and a critical Afterword. Book excerpt: This text provides the beginning counseling student with a comprehensive overview and discussion of the practical application of career counseling skills. Based on the view that counselors must be prepared in a holisitic manner, it covers the historical and theoretical foundations of career counseling, the skills and techniques needed for career counseling, and contextual perspectives on career and lifestyle planning. Important material that is often overlooked in introductory texts is included, such as career and lifestyle planning with clients in mental health, rehabilitation, and couples and family counseling settings; gender issues; and working with LGBT and minority clients. Throughout the text, case studies, informational sidebars, and experiential activities make for a more engaging learning experience and encourage additional contemplation of chapter content. This new edition features new, updated, and expanded content throughout; the division of career counseling in schools into separate chapters for K-8th grade, high school, and college, including traditional, hybrid, and online campuses; and an online instructor's manual with student resources, offering material to enhance the pedagogical features of the text.

Progress in three well known interest inventories -- the Strong Campbell Interest Inventory, the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey, and the Self Directed Search -- is closely examined. A focus on innovations in interest measurement directs attention to how more recent instruments provide technical and conceptual advances over older, more reliable ones. Both research and counseling perspectives combine to provide a well-balanced guide to the study of vocational psychology. How interest inventories can be used beneficially in the career counseling of minority and majority populations is also explored.
