La imperiosa necesidad del agua para el desarrollo de la actividad humana hizo que las civilizaciones antiguas se asentaran en los márgenes de los grandes ríos. La Agricultura desarrollada en estas zonas comenzó a utilizar la experiencia adquirida con las crecidas periódicas de los ríos que suministraban agua a sus cultivos para realizar una Agricultura de regadío cada vez más perfeccionada. El método de riego originario consistía en aplicar el agua sobre la superficie y dejar que discurriera por gravedad, método que con el tiempo se fue perfeccionando con la incorporación de una red de distribución de agua más apropiada y un manejo del riego más racional. Este método, más perfeccionado por supuesto, aún se sigue utilizando masivamente en todo el mundo.
