Book excerpt: A groundbreaking guide for women of all ages that shows their natural moodiness is a strength, not a weakness As women, we learn from an early age that our moods are a problem, an annoyance to be stuffed away. But our bodies are wiser than we imagine. Moods are a finely tuned feedback system that allows us to be more empathic, intuitive, and aware of our own capabilities. If we deny our emotionality, we deny the breadth of our talents. Yet millions of American women are medicating away their emotions with psychiatric drugs whose effects are more far-reaching than most of us realize. And even if we don’t pop a pill, women everywhere are numbing their emotions with food, alcohol, and a host of addictive behaviors that deny the wisdom of our bodies and keep us from addressing the real issues we face. Psychiatrist Julie Holland knows there is a better way. In Moody Bitches, she shares insider information about the drugs we’re being offered and the direct link between food and mood, and she offers practical advice on sex, exercise, and sleep strategies, as well as some surprisingly effective natural therapies. In the tradition of Our Bodies, Our Selves, this groundbreaking guide will forge a much needed new path in women’s health—and offer women invaluable information on how to live better, and be more balanced, at every stage of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Montserrat Ordóñez Prize 2018 This book provides an original and exciting analysis of Colombian women’s writing and its relationship to feminist history from the 1970s to the present. In a period in which questions surrounding women and gender are often sidelined in the academic arena, it argues that feminism has been an important and intrinsic part of contemporary Colombian history. Focusing on understudied literary and non-literary texts written by Colombian women, it traces the particularities of Colombian feminism, showing how it has been closely entwined with left-wing politics and the country’s history of violence. This book therefore rethinks the place of feminism in Latin American history and its relationship to feminisms elsewhere, challenging many of the predominant critical paradigms used to understand Latin American literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twilight of the Avant-Garde addresses the central problem of contemporary Spanish poetry: the attempt to preserve the scope and ambition of modernist poetry at the end of the twentieth century. Offering a critical analysis of Luis Garcìa Montero’s “poetry of experience,” and the work of José Angel Valente and Antonio Gamoneda, among others, Mayhew challenges received notions about the value of poetic language in relation to the society and culture at large. Ultimately championing the survival of more challenging and ambitious modes of poetic writing in the postmodern age, this volume argues that the cultural ambition of modernist poetics remains alive and well in our age of cynicism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infamous rise in characterizations of white women as Becky(s) is a modern phenomenon, different from past characterizations like the Miss Anne types. But just who embodies the Becky? Why is it important to understand, especially with regards to anti-racism and racial justice? Understanding that learning, moreover even discussing, dynamics of race and gender are oftentimes met with discomfort and emotional resistance, this creative, yet theoretical book merges social science analyses with literary short stories as a way to more effectively teach about the impact of whiteness and gender. Additionally, the book includes guiding questions so that readers can critically reflect on the behaviors of Becky(s) and how they impact the hope for racial harmony. Designed specifically for both educational spaces and the larger society, the author, an educational researcher and former classroom teacher, approaches the topic of race and gender, specifically whiteness and white women, in a nuanced manner. By borrowing from traditions found in critical race theory and teacher education, this book offers both counterstories and anecdotes that can help people better understand the dynamics behind race and gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice explores the theoretical advantages and clinical implications for utilizing Venous Embolization techniques, including portal vein and hepatic vein embolization. The practice of venous embolization of the liver was originally developed in Japan by Dr. Makuuchi (one of the co-editors of this book) in 1990 and since then, the techniques reviewed in this book are practiced throughout the world and are now considered the “standard of care” at many hepatobiliary centres worldwide. Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice covers a multitude of topics, including: pertinent vascular (microscopic and macroscopic) and surgical anatomy, liver regeneration (including the atrophy-hypertrophy complex), historical perspectives of major hepatic resection, various hepatobiliary surgical procedures , factors affecting hypertrophy, pathophysiology of embolization and resection, embolization techniques (including approaches and embolic agents), the indications for embolization and resection (including pre-operative volumetric and functional assessment and post-embolization followup), potential complications, outcomes data for different diseases, recently advocated strategies (including “definitive” treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma using portal vein embolization after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization) and future perspectives. This book is a valuable resource for interventional radiologists and hepatobiliary surgeons who perform the embolization procedures and liver resections. Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice can also be used secondarily by diagnostic radiologists, medical oncologists specializing in gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, liver transplant surgeons and basic scientists interested in liver regeneration physiology research.

Book excerpt: This study examines the concepts and role of women in selected Spanish discourses and literary texts from the late fifteenth to seventeenth centuries from the perspective of feminist disability theories, concluding that paradoxically, femininity, bodily afflictions, and mental instability characterized the new literary heroes at the very time Spain was at the apex of its imperial power.
