Book Synopsis Celiac Disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity by : Luis Rodrigo
Download or read book Celiac Disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity written by Luis Rodrigo and published by OmniaScience. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celiac disease is a systemic autoimmune process and appears in genetically predisposed individuals, with a well-known cause, consisting in a permanent intolerance to gluten, a protein contained in the flour of wheat, rye, barley and oats. Worldwide celiac disease affects to 1% of the Caucasian and there is recent evidence that the disease is increasing in USA and Finland among other regions in the world. It is considered to be the most prevalent disease with a genetic predisposition. The clinical forms of presentation are varied. The classical form consisting of diarrhea, anemia and failure to thrive is still common in children, but in the adult patients the symptoms resemble the irritable bowel syndrome. Mono-symptomatic forms with extra-intestinal manifestations are frequent. Hematological, cutaneous, articular, hepatic, bone and neurological manifestations are often described. This protean presentation and the lack of awareness explain the delay in diagnosis and suggest that screening in high-risk groups is indicated. The publication of this book written mainly by Spanish and Latin-American clinicians, researchers, and teachers, demonstrates the wide interest and the involvement of different disciplines that are necessary to understand celiac disease and gluten-related pathologies, such as non-celiac gluten-sensitivity. This has a great impact in the general public and in the industry. However, the knowledge of non-celiac gluten-related pathologies remains scarce but presently in the process of being properly defined. This book also highlights the importance of recognizing non-celiac gluten-sensitivity and briefly discusses a new definition. It also provides some perspectives to take into account when studying celiac disease in China and Central America. It describes new observations in Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica. The psychosocial impact as studied and reported by Argentinean investigators also adds to the value of this book. Written with a multidisciplinary team, we think that this book could be of interest to a great variety of medical specialists. Due to the systemic nature and variable presentation of celiac disease it certainly is of interest to pediatricians, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, specialists in internal medicine, general practitioners as well as hematologists, immunologists, geneticists, pathologists, rheumatologists, dermatologists, neurologists, gynecologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, orthopedic surgeons, specialists in rehabilitation medicine, endocrinologists. Being gluten the cause of these disorders, the food industry, dietitians and nutritionists will benefit from the valuable information presented in this book.

Book Synopsis Aneurysmal Disease of the Thoracic and Abdominal Aorta by : Ruth Bush
Download or read book Aneurysmal Disease of the Thoracic and Abdominal Aorta written by Ruth Bush and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first successful open surgical repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm was in 1951 by Dubost and represented a tremendous milestone in the care of this challenging disease. The introduction of endovascular repair in 1991 by Parodi furthered the care of these patients by allowing for lower morbidity and mortality rates and also, enabling surgeons to extend surgical treatment to patients traditionally deemed too high of a surgical risk. This new book on Aortic Disease covers many interesting and vital topics necessary for both the practicing surgeon as well as a student of vascular disease. The book starts with background information on the evolution of aortic management from traditional open surgical repair to modern endovascular therapies. There is also a chapter covering the data supporting current treatment modalities and how these data have supported modern management. Also, the use of endovascular means for care of the challenging situation of ruptured aneurysms is discussed. In addition to management of abdominal aneurysm, there is a chapter on treatment of aneurysms of the ascending aorta. Along with surgical treatment, one must also understand the molecular basis for how blood vessels remodel and thus, the role of cathepsins in aortic disease is elucidated. Lastly, chapters discussing the perioperative management of radiation exposure and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks as well as the need for high-quality postoperative nutrition will lend well to a full understanding of how to management patients from presentation to hospital discharge. We hope you enjoy this book, its variety of topics, and gain a fuller knowledge of Aneurysmal Disease of the Thoracic and Abdominal Aorta.

Over the next 10 years, deaths due to COPD are expected to increase by 30% and, by 2030, COPD is estimated to be the third leading cause of death worldwide. Research into the pathophysiology and management of COPD over the past decade has progressed immensely with greater understanding of the global burden of COPD, its pathophysiology, better understanding of the multisystemic manifestations of COPD, and, most importantly, novel and more effective therapeutic strategies. This volume brings together an international group of experts in COPD to provide in depth reviews of clinical perspectives into COPD. Topics range from the diagnosis of airflow limitation by spirometry; distinguishing COPD from another common obstructive lung disease, asthma; alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency and opportunities to diagnose this most common hereditary cause of COPD and as a paradigm for the development of novel therapeutics; the overlap syndrome - the concurrence of two epidemic disorders: COPD and obstructive sleep apnea; and pulmonary rehabilitation, one of the most effective treatments for COPD.
