Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a range of topics in design, such as universal design; design for all; digital inclusion; universal usability; and accessibility of technologies regardless of users’ age, financial situation, education, geographic location, culture and language. It especially focuses on accessibility for people with auditory, cognitive, neurological, and visual impairments, ageing populations, and mobility for those with special physical needs. The book explores some of the overlaps between inclusive design and web accessibility to help managers, designers, developers, policy makers, and researchers optimize their efforts in these areas. Based on the AHFE 2019 International Conference on Design for Inclusion, held on July 24-28, held in Washington D.C., USA, it discusses new design technologies and highlights the disparate needs of the individuals within a community. Thanks to its multidisciplinary approach, it provides readers with various backgrounds with a timely, practice-oriented guide to design for inclusion.

This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most early social research into planned events had the effect of broadcasting narratives of dominant cultures and privileged groups. More recently, however, convergences of gender, sexualities, ethnicities, age, class, religion, and intersectional analyses and events studies have started to drive new critical understanding of the impacts of events on non-mainstream, non-majority communities around the globe. This timely book addresses current gaps in the literature surrounding issues of accessibility, inclusion, and diversity in various event landscapes. Structured into four parts covering the main types of events, the chapters present original topics using innovative methodological approaches. Each chapter employs a case study to illustrate the key intertwining issues in these various experiential realms. Further, the chapters are all cross- or interdisciplinary, drawing on gender, sexualities, cultural, race/ethnicity studies as well as multiple literatures that feed into critical events studies and exploring a variety of global examples. This significant book opens the path to further research on the role and importance of accessibility, inclusion, and diversity in events environments worldwide. It will be of interest to academics and researchers of critical event studies as well as a number of related social science disciplines.

Book excerpt: The book focuses on low carbon construction materials such as stabilised compressed earth blocks (CEB’s) and rammed earth (RE). The content has been divided into four broad themes which includes an introduction to earth construction & stabilised earth, stabilised compressed earth blocks and masonry, stabilised rammed earth, and energy, carbon emissions, sustainability and case studies. It provides basic introduction to earthen materials and earthen structures, particularly with reference to the contemporary work on stabilised earth products for structural applications in buildings. The illustrations in the form of graphs, tables and photographs help the reader to get a grip over the CEB and RE construction. The book illustrates many case studies and examples of CEB and RE buildings. The knowledge on structural characteristics of CEB and RE especially with reference to the durability of such earthen products, and the structural design aspects is uniquely dealt. The embodied energy, embodied carbon, and the impact on construction sector touching upon sustainability of buildings is another unique feature of the book. This volume will be a useful guide for the research community, teachers, engineers, architects, building professionals, practicing engineers, students and individuals aspiring to build low carbon and sustainable buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the text genre of medical brochures in the United Kingdom and Spain for two main reasons: firstly, to determine the features that these texts present in each country, and, secondly, to check if medical brochures published in Spain and translated from Spanish into English include all relevant features typical of original English texts. It begins by defining the terms ‘genre’, ‘class’ and ‘type’ and relating them to ‘medical brochures’. After referring to ‘text type’, a related term is explained: ‘text typology’. This leads to the discussion of several specialised typologies and the presentation of a new proposal of typology, in which the position of the genre of medical brochures is determined. In order to perform a contrastive study of medical brochures in English and in Spanish, the book defines what constitutes a ‘linguistic corpus’, comments on different types of corpora, and presents its own version of classification in which the corpus used for the study is located. Finally, the results obtained from the contrastive analysis are presented and analysed: the features observed in the original brochures (English and Spanish) are shown, and the results are contrasted with those found in the translated brochures.
