Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual and Course of Study, Elementary Schools It is not a painted rag; it is a whole national history. - Beecher. The St. Nicholas flag will suggest many interesting exercises. If possible a large flag should be procured; at least place the outlines of one upon the blackboard, coloring while studying. With primary pupils give a few leading facts connected with the history of the colony represented by the first stripe and, when they can state them, color the stripe with crayon; then take the second, continuing until pupils can give the facts of all the colonies represented by the stripes. A flag might also be made upon heavy cardboard or pasteboard and the stripes cut out. Then have a flag-building exercise, letting each pupil take a stripe, tell what he can concerning the colony, and place it in its proper order. Whatever method is used, study the work in connection with a United States map. Use also pictures, history stories, patriotic poems and songs. Many incidents, catch-words, and associated facts will help pupils to remember the order of the "star-states." For example, Vermont, the first "star state;" Kentucky and Tennessee the "neighbor states." Take next the six "see-saw" states, first a northern, then a southern. Explain the jealousy of the North and South, how they were like selfish children, each afraid the other would get the advantage. Associate with Maine, the "Pine Tree State," the thought of lumber for the many buildings necessary in the growing country; with Missouri, the slavery question and Missouri Compromise; with Michigan, the "home state" idea; with California, the "Golden State," the discovery of gold and consequent excitement, contrasting with the Klondike of today; with Kansas, its central location, giving an idea of the vastness of our country. Finally, let every lesson teach that for which the flag stands. Emphasize the growth or rather the growing together, of the colonies and territories up to the present complete union. Then teach our "E pluribus unum" and its significance. 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Francis Scott Key. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota Course of Study: For Elementary Schools and Manual for Teachers For a long time, workers in the field of elementary education in Minnesota felt the need of a state course of study. About twelve years ago the superintendent of public instruction, Mr. J. W. Olsen, had prepared and published an elementary course of study. This proved most valuable, but, during 1913, a committee, authorized by the Minnesota Educational Association, prepared a report (Bulletin No. 51) which dealt largely with the elimination of subject-matter, and pointed out the need of a revised study course to serve alike city, village, and rural schools. This very general need of a revised and enlarged course of study for elementary schools was unanimously recognized by state and local school supervisors. In consideration of these facts, in the fall of 1915, Mr. C. G. Schulz, State Superintendent of Education, laid plans for the preparation of such a course. Although the mechanical work on the book occupied but a year, it was really "in the making" a much longer period, for it embodies not only the experience of the author, but that of the many teachers and students of education who generously helped to make the work what it is. To all of these the author acknowledges her debt and tenders her gratitude. With the increased responsibilities thrown upon the schools because of changing social conditions, teachers have, today, not only to be better prepared to begin their work, but they must, more than ever before, keep growing professionally. One means of such growth is a course of study, broad enough in outlook, to bear repeated readings with fresh interpretations at each forward step in the reader's professional progress. The hope that this course might prove such an one is in part realized, for, during the past few months, those who have most persistently studied the course speak of what they "continue to discover" in it. That the hope may be completely realized, and that the Minnesota Course of Study may be a definite factor in the growth of many teachers is the wish of its author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study and Manual of Methods for the Elementary Schools of Iowa The course of study as outlined provides for five divisions. Read ing serves as the most convenient and logical basis of classification. The first year pupils, or all pupils who read in the first reader, constitute the E division. All the pupils who read in the second reader should be classified in the. D division. Third and fourth year pupils are to be classed in th'e C division, provided they are correspondingly advanced in their other studies. The B division will include nearly all the pupils of the fifth and sixth years, or those who read in the fourth reader. But if for any reasons, pupils have not completed the work of the C division, they should not be promoted to the B division simply because they are in the fourth reader class. All pupils in the seventh and eighth years, who are in the fifth reader class and up in their other studies, make up the A division. In many rural schools, the organization and classification are exceedingly faulty. The reasons for this are apparent. Teachers and school directors are changed too frequently. Families move from one part of the country to another, and their children lose time, bring no grades or records from their former teachers, and always want to use their old books. Some pupils are slow; others fast. Some are strong; others are not able to carry full work. Some pupils are regular in attendance; while others are very irregular. Many rural Schools are taught by inexperienced teachers - high school graduates from town, who never attended a rural school. For all these reasons it may be that, not much dependence can be placed upon the classification of the preceding teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Elementary Course of Study for the Common Schools of Wisconsin: Fifteenth Edition On the other hand much time is wasted and the mental pow ers deadened because repetition is demanded in branches where reason should rule. This fault is illustrated in the teaching of History, Reading and Geography, especially in the Upper Form. Memoriter repetition of the text in history is of little value. The student should be held to a rational statement of the substance of the lesson and should be obliged to prove his understanding of it so far as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary School Standards: Instruction Course of Study; Supervision; Applied to New York City The problems dealt with by Professor McMurry in this book cover one of the most important fields included in the New York City School Inquiry. His task was to arrive at a just estimate of the quality of the teaching, the course of study, and the supervision by the principals in the elementary schools. This task naturally led him to formulate standards of value, whereby the work of the elementary schools could be appraised. Rejecting the usual examinations as inadequate and unsatisfactory for his purpose, Professor McMurry has judged the quality of the teaching, course of study, and supervision by the degree to which all three are controlled by purposes of recognized value in daily living. His formulation of the standards on which his judgments are based and his detailed descriptions of the application of those standards to the actual work of the schools will be useful, we believe, to earnest teachers everywhere. Professor McMurry did not attempt to make these standards all-embracing, but they are so fundamental to satisfactory plans and procedure in elementary school work that, whatever limitations as to scope and variety they may possess, all good elementary schools must conform to them. Further, they point the way to progressive improvement where improvement is desirable. This book is, accordingly, not merely a report made by one of my associates in the New York City School Inquiry; it is a contribution to the professional resources of teachers and supervising officers wherever their lot may be cast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study: Baltimore County, Maryland, Public Schools; Grade I to VIII This Outline of Study is published by order of the Board of School Commissioners of Baltimore County, and in accordance with the By-Laws of the State Board of Education. It shows more or less in detail the subject matter by topics to be covered in each of the eight elementary grades, as well as the text-books, supplementary books and teachers' desk and reference books to be used; it also indicates aims and to a certain extent suggests methods of teaching. The Course of Study published in 1908 has been carefully revised and reconstructed by committees of teachers representing the various grades. All the suburban schools and teachers were not only invited to send in suggestions and criticisms of the 1908 Course of Study to these committees, but they were repeatedly requested to do so, until a reply was received. These suggestions were worked over by the committees of teachers working with the grade supervisors. Great care was taken to secure unity from grade to grade; to futher secure this end, outside specialists in various subjects were asked to criticise the subject matter as a whole in their special fields. The present Course of Study may, therefore, be characterized as the crystallized present judgment of large groups of specialists in grade teaching and of specialists in grade supervision, together with the judgment and helpful criticism of subject specialists not connected directly with our schools, on the organization of subject matter in their special fields. As such, it affords a new point of departure in our elementary school work. It represents our best experience and our present ideals and practice. Growth is expected to go on again from the moment it is put into use, and consequent modifications will be made in group meetings, as heretofore. It is intended to be no more static than any previous course. The Course of Study will be especially helpful as a guide to new teachers entering the corps, and, I trust, will prove an inspiration for further achievement to teachers and supervisors now in the corps who have so generously contributed their time and thought to its organization. The new form, also, will no doubt make it more usable and more attractive in appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
