Book excerpt: Manon Gropius had three parents. She was the daughter of Alma Mahler (the widow of Gustav Mahler) and her second husband, Walter Gropius (the architect and founder of the Bauhaus school), and also was the stepdaughter of Alma's third husband, Franz Werfel. Manon's World explores the life and death of a child at the center of a broken love triangle. Not just a narrative biography, Manon's World is a medical history of the polio that killed Manon and an intimate cultural history of the aspirations projected on her, as seen by the Nobel Prize-winner Elias Canette who devoted two chapter of his memoirs to his encounters with Manon. In the same spirit, the composer Alban Berg dedicated his Violin Concerto to her. Reidel reveals a complex image of a young woman who desired to be an actress and artist in her own right despite being her mother’s intended protégé, an inspiration to her father who rarely saw her, and her stepfather Franz Werfel. -- Adapted from dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical exploration of female submission, using insights from feminist thinkers—especially Simone de Beauvoir—to reveal the complexities of women’s reality and lived experience What role do women play in the perpetuation of patriarchy? On the one hand, popular media urges women to be independent, outspoken, and career-minded. Yet, this same media glorifies a specific, sometimes voluntary, female submissiveness as a source of satisfaction. In philosophy, even less has been said on why women submit to men and the discussion has been equally contradictory—submission has traditionally been considered a vice or pathology, but female submission has been valorized as innate to women’s nature. Is there a way to explore female submission in all of its complexity—not denying its appeal in certain instances, and not buying into an antifeminist, sexist, or misogynistic perspective? We Are Not Born Submissive offers the first in-depth philosophical exploration of female submission, focusing on the thinking of Simone de Beauvoir, and more recent work in feminist philosophy, epistemology, and political theory. Manon Garcia argues that to comprehend female submission, we must invert how we examine power and see it from the woman’s point of view. Historically, philosophers, psychoanalysts, and even some radical feminists have conflated femininity and submission. Garcia demonstrates that only through the lens of women’s lived experiences—their economic, social, and political situations—and how women adapt their preferences to maintain their own well-being, can we understand the ways in which gender hierarchies in society shape women’s experiences. Ultimately, she asserts that women do not actively choose submission. Rather, they consent to—and sometimes take pleasure in—what is prescribed to them through social norms within a patriarchy. Moving beyond the simplistic binary of natural destiny or moral vice, We Are Not Born Submissive takes a sophisticated look at how female submissiveness can be explained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giacomo Puccini, composer of some of the world's most popular operas, including La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, was also a highly literary person who based his librettos on existing works of literature. This work explores that literary inheritance in an effort to enhance the listener's appreciation of the operatic experience. The author argues that the majority of Puccini's operas compose a grand cycle that finds its roots in the romance genre of 12th century France, serving to celebrate the strong, independent heroine. Via a close examination of the source works, the librettos, and the scores, this book offers fresh perspective on Puccini's legacy.

Book excerpt: Literature reveals that the hidden strings of the human `passional soul' are the creative source of the specifically human existence. Continuing the inquiry into the `elemental passions of the soul' and the Human Creative Soul pursued in several previous volumes of this series, the present volume focuses on the `passions of the earth', bringing to light some of the primogenital existential threads of the innermost bonds of the Human Condition and mother earth. In Tymieniecka's words, the studies purpose to unravel the essential bond between the living human being and the earth - a bond that lies at the heart of our existence. A heightened awareness of this bond should enlighten our situation and help us find our existential bearings.

Book excerpt: Poems tall or short or wide— All are infinite inside. In Gilles Tibo’s wonder-filled tribute to poetry, poems bloom in fields, fly on the wings of birds, and float on the foam of the sea. They are written in the dark of night, in the light of happiness, and in the warmth of the writer’s heart. Each poem is illustrated with Manon Gauthier’s whimsical paper collage art, which is both child-like and sophisticated. Rhymed or unrhymed, regular or irregular, the verses bring not just poems but the very concept of poetry to the level of a child, making them accessible to all. If all the world is a poem, then anyone can be a poet!

Book excerpt: Unmasked: pro hockey's first female goalie tells her own storyShe didn't get to this level because she's a girl. She got here because she's good. -- Paolo Racicot, Captain of the Trois-Rivieres DraveursShe is one of those rare athletes -- and there aren't many of them -- who appeal to the general population, not just those in her sport. -- Mary Ormsby, The Toronto StarWhat's it like being the first woman ever to play professional hockey? It's being 20 years old, with every move you make scrutinized by the coach, the players, the hockey scouts and the Hollywood scouts who want to make a movie and tell the world all about you. It's having to borrow an outfit from one of your teammates when your luggage gets lost somewhere between Quebec City and Tampa Bay -- only your teammate is seven inches taller and 60 pounds heavier than you.More than anything, it's making a dream come true -- the dream of any young person with talent, fierce determination and that special quality that sets you apart in the brutally competitive world of professional sports. From the time she was four years old, commanded by her big brothers to play goal, Manon Rheaume minded the net. Her ability took her all the way to the position of starting goalie for the Canadian Women's World Champions 1990 hockey team and on to the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs, an men's Major Junior A league team. Her play for the Draveurs, just one notch down from the pros, coupled with her appearance for the Tampa Bay Lightning in an NHL exhibition game, has created huge media and fan interest. This behind-the-scenes look at the first woman in professional hockey -- both on and off the ice -- offers Manon Rheaume'sunique and candid perspective. Just in time for the hockey season, Manon: Alone in Front of the Net will be a much talked about sports title and a book that young people especially will enjoy.

Book excerpt: 'The sweetness of her glance - or rather, my evil star already in its ascendant and drawing me to my ruin - did not allow me to hesitate for a moment' So begins the story of Manon Lescaut, a tale of passion and betrayal, of delinquency and misalliance, which moves from early eighteenth-century Paris - with its theatres, assemblies, and gaming-houses - via prison and deportation to a tragic denouement in the treeless waste of Louisiana. It is one of the great love stories, and also one of the most enigmatic: how reliable a witness is Des Grieux, Manon's lover, whose tale he narrates? Is Manon a thief and a whore, the image of love itself, or a thoroughly modern woman? Prévost is careful to leave the ambiguities unresolved, and to lay bare the disorders of passion. This new translation includes the vignette and eight illustrations that were approved by Prévost and first published in the edition of 1753. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
