Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Walking underground” for the first time in his life, Juan Marcos Villalobos, a freshly arrived migrant to New York City, offers his seat to a woman standing on the subway. Though his English isn’t up to her rude reply, he quickly realizes that good manners in Nueva York are quite different than in Puerto Rico! Juan Marcos is eager to continue his studies in the United States and rents a room from family friends living in El Barrio, or Spanish Harlem. Soon, he has a job wrapping packages at a department store that pays as much as he made teaching high school at home. As he interacts with the Puerto Rican community in New York, he witnesses the problems his compatriots encounter, including discrimination, inadequate housing, jobs and wages. Despite these problems, friendships and romances bloom and rivalries surface, leading to betrayal and even attempted murder! Originally published in 1951 as Trópico en Manhattan, it was the first novel to focus on the postwar influx of Puerto Ricans to New York. Cotto-Thorner’s use of code-switching, or “Spanglish,” reflects the characters’ bicultural reality and makes the novel a forerunner of Nuyorican writing and contemporary Latino literature. This new bilingual edition contains a first-ever English translation by J. Bret Maney that artfully captures the style and spirit of the original Spanish. The novel’s exploration of class, race and gender—while demonstrating the community’s resilience and cultural pride—ensures its relevance today.

Young "All a we a one: a Caribbean scrapbook" is the great love for the Caribbean shines through these pages, as author and photographer David Young tries to depict the real Caribbean. The people are wonderful. The variety is endless. And in that variety I have encountered more expressions of human dignity and worth than I ever imagined were possible, he writes. Identity and unity, thoughts and dreams, people, words and music, religious plurality, economic realities, historical roots and future choices. These he depicts in scraps of folktales and speeches, poetry and song, statistics and impressions. His collection of words and photographs portrays many facets of life in the islands as well as the mainland countries of the Caribbean. With Dave Young's eyes, we see and know our neighbors better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the tumultuous 1950s in America, sex was as threatening to the nation’s moral order as communism. New York was the capital of the post–World War II world and the epicenter of a fierce culture war over music, theatre, movies, fashion, and literature, as well as birth control, homosexuality, adolescent sex, pornography, and prostitution. Over the last half-century, America’s social life—especially notions of culture, sexuality, and politics—has fundamentally changed, and what were once sinful or subversive sexual practices have been integrated into the marketplace, irreversibly changing American moral values; the once illicit has become an industry of more than $50 billion. Drawing on first-person interviews, unpublished memoirs, newspaper accounts, contemporary studies, government documents, and recent scholarship, Sin, Sex & Subversion argues that “deviant” sexuality was subversive, and that unique New York “outsiders” of the 1950s set the stage for the following decades and the world we know today. In each chapter, author David Rosen examines a critical moral issue through an in-depth profile of figures such as Liberace, Samuel Roth, Bettie Page, the Rosenbergs, and others. Through these individuals, Rosen shows how those who operated outside the law or who challenged popular values, even if they were silenced in their time, ended up paving the way for a new normal. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history—books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manhattan HE sun with sabre of illuming ame Has rent the storm, and out of darkness rise, In the belated are that strikes the skies, Colossal roofs like summits lost to fame, Or mountains heaped by Titans to reclaim The throne of Gods whose thunder still replies; A mighty bastion, lit for dream's surmise, Defying heaven with abortive aim. O shadowed marvel! Are thy peaks that fade A vision or a verity sublime? Thy promontories, where the storm delayed, Illusion's dream or the long boast of time? The ultimate shaft of sunset disappears, And leaves the night no answer from the years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
