Book excerpt: Jamaica has a rich musical heritage spanning a diversity of styles and forms. Throughout the island's modern history, music has played a significant role in the social, political and economic life of its people. Mango Time: Folk Songs of Jamaica draws from the wealth of Jamaica's folk music - the music of the Jamaican people which, with its colourful range of forms, reflects the way of life of individuals or entire communities. There are religious songs and secular songs; songs for marriage, birth, death and all rites of passage. There are songs for work and songs for play; songs of upliftment and hope, and songs of derision and despair; songs which tell of small happenings in remote villages and songs which give epic accounts of significant happenings in the island's history. In all these, the Jamaican folk song gives voice to the heart, soul and experience of the Jamaican people.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of A Breath of Fresh Air, this beautiful novel takes us to modern India during the height of the summer’s mango season. Heat, passion, and controversy explode as a woman is forced to decide between romance and tradition. Every young Indian leaving the homeland for the United States is given the following orders by their parents: Don’t eat any cow (It’s still sacred!), don’t go out too much, save (and save, and save) your money, and most important, do not marry a foreigner. Priya Rao left India when she was twenty to study in the U.S., and she’s never been back. Now, seven years later, she’s out of excuses. She has to return and give her family the news: She’s engaged to Nick Collins, a kind, loving American man. It’s going to break their hearts. Returning to India is an overwhelming experience for Priya. When she was growing up, summer was all about mangoes—ripe, sweet mangoes, bursting with juices that dripped down your chin, hands, and neck. But after years away, she sweats as if she’s never been through an Indian summer before. Everything looks dirtier than she remembered. And things that used to seem natural (a buffalo strolling down a newly laid asphalt road, for example) now feel totally chaotic. But Priya’s relatives remain the same. Her mother and father insist that it’s time they arranged her marriage to a “nice Indian boy.” Her extended family talks of nothing but marriage—particularly the marriage of her uncle Anand, which still has them reeling. Not only did Anand marry a woman from another Indian state, but he also married for love. Happiness and love are not the point of her grandparents’ or her parents’ union. In her family’s rule book, duty is at the top of the list. Just as Priya begins to feel she can’t possibly tell her family that she’s engaged to an American, a secret is revealed that leaves her stunned and off-balance. Now she is forced to choose between the love of her family and Nick, the love of her life. As sharp and intoxicating as sugarcane juice bought fresh from a market cart, The Mango Season is a delightful trip into the heart and soul of both contemporary India and a woman on the edge of a profound life change. From the Hardcover edition.

Book excerpt: The Mango is one of the oldest cultivated fruit crops, having been grown in India for at least 4000 years. Mango is the most important fruit crop of Asia and its annual production is exceeded worldwide only by Musa, citrus, grapes and apples. The last decade has seen a rapid growth of mango production, mainly due to expansion into new growing regions but also to the adoption of modern field practices and cultivars. A wide range of fresh, mango cultivars are now consumed worldwide and are available year round. The Mango: Botany, Production and Uses, published in 1997, represented the first comprehensive examination of all aspects of modern mango production and research. Developing upon the successful first edition, this book incorporates a discussion of significant advances in mango research that have contributed to improved production and will be highly relevant for researchers and growers alike.

Most importantly, these sources enrich the colonial corpus with modern data – significantly expanding on our knowledge on language continuity and change.

Book excerpt: From smoothies to folklore, a global history of the many incarnations of the mango. This beautifully illustrated book takes us on a tour through the rich world of mangoes, which inspire fervent devotion across the world. In South Asia, mangoes boast a history steeped in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, even earning a mention in the Kama Sutra. Beyond myth, the authors show us that mangoes hold literary significance as a potent metaphor. While mango-flavored smoothies grace Western grocery shelves, the true essence of sweet, juicy mangoes or tangy, unripe varieties is a rarity: supermarket offerings often prioritize shelf-life over taste. This book offers an accessible introduction to the world of true mango aficionados and the thousand varieties they cherish.

Book excerpt: Flower initiation in mango (var: “Mallika”) commenced at 21.83 ± 1.58 days after bud development and staminate : hermaphrodite flower ratio was 1:0.29. In each flower, one fertile and four staminoids were present. Staminate and hermaphrodite flowers opened during 0730-1000 hrs. and 0800-1100 hrs. and in them anther dehiscence occurred at 27.1 ± 3.1 and 29.3 ± 4.8 min. after anthesis, respectively. Fruit set (no./panicle) was 2.90 ±1.27 in unbagged and zero in bagged inflorescence. Total longevity of each flower was 81.96 ± 2.14 hrs. Forty five insect species found foraging on the inflorescence belonged to Hymenoptera (60%), Diptera (24.44%), Hemiptera (6.67%), Coleoptera (4.44%) and Lepidoptera (4.44%). Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index (H) values ranged from 1.201-1.586 during different hours of the day, with peak ‘H’ values during 0900-1100 hrs. (1.597-1.619). Highest ‘H’ value (1.551) was recorded at >90 per cent flowering stage. Berger-Parker index (d) for dominance during 25, 50, 75 and >90 percent flowering was highest for E. obliquus (d=0.40, 0.40, 0.36 and 0.34). E. obliquus, Chrysomya sp., A. florea and A. cerana indica spent 11.83, 8.33, 5.29 and 3.76 sec. on each flower, respectively. All four species spent maximum foraging time during 1000-1100 hrs. E. obliquus, Chrysomya sp., A. florea and A. cerana indica visited 36.38, 42.93, 57.33 and 69.40 flowers /5 min., respectively. Maximum bee visitation was recorded at 0600-0700 hrs. and 1700-1800 hrs. Further, E. obliquus, Chrysomya sp., A. florea and A. cerana indica visited 13.03, 18.18, 27.84 and 31.78 flowers per inflorescence. Significant negative correlation (p=0.001) was observed between the number of flowers visited per inflorescence and time spent w.r.t. all the four species.
