Book excerpt: When my wife Carole and I joined the Old Trails Historical Society in 2010, I was approached by a member, asking me if I could take pictures of the old houses on Manchester Road. She wanted the pictures on a CD so that she could make a presentation at one of the local schools. I agreed, and before long my wife Carole and I were traipsing up and down Manchester Road taking pictures of the old historic homes. the CD was finished, and I thought that would be the end of that. Well, it wasn't. Being an amateur historian, I began to ask if there were other historic homes that we had missed. There were! Not only homes, but springs, creeks, caves, Indian mounds, and hidden cemeteries. At the same time, Carole and I were also tasked by the Historic Society to begin an inventory of all items in the historic 1835 Bacon Log Cabin, which is located a scant block away from our house. I was given the lofty title of "Property Master of the Bacon Log Cabin," and was given the keys to that most venerable place. In going through some of the artifacts in the log cabin I discovered more interesting information about the City of Manchester. I was bitten by the history bug. I needed to know more. I noted that there had been many histories written about Manchester City and its early beginnings. When it came time to decide to write this book, I felt that it was not necessary to repeat information already available. My wife and I decided to write a picture book instead, interspersed with snippets of the area history. Again we took more pictures of homes, churches, cemeteries, parks, etc. and organized them as you see them in this book. In some cases, the pictures and short stories of people who lived in these old homes have been included. In other cases, older residents of Manchester were interviewed and some of their memoirs have also been included separately, with their permission. During these processes, we made many new friends. Please note the lack of consistency in the spelling of some names. the names are spelled here the way they were spelled in the various sources referenced. Where addresses of homes have been changed, both the new and the old addresses are shown with the old address in square brackets. from its beginnings in the 1700's, as a small settlement called Hoards town, to the current modern city of Manchester, much history has occurred. Sadly many of the old homes, many of them log cabins and log houses, have been destroyed in the name of progress. Thanks to the Old Trails Historic Society and to the many historic minded people in Manchester, enough has been preserved for our use as a tie, back to its beginnings. Many people have contributed in making Manchester a great city. the stories of a few of them are enclosed in this book. Many thanks to all true historians who contributed to, and who supported this endeavor. Frank & Carole MasottoBallwin, Missouri 63011 October 13, 2013

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum Bodies provides an account of how museums have staged, prescribed and accommodated a repertoire of bodily practices, from their emergence in the eighteenth century to the present day. As long as museums have existed, their visitors have been scrutinised, both formally and informally, and their behaviour calibrated as a register of cognitive receptivity and cultural competence. Yet there has been little sustained theoretical or practical attention given to the visitors' embodied encounter with the museum. In Museum Bodies Helen Rees Leahy discusses the politics and practice of visitor studies, and the differentiation and exclusion of certain bodies on the basis of, for example, age, gender, educational attainment, ethnicity and disability. At a time when museums are more than ever concerned with size, demographic mix and the diversity of their audiences, as well as with the ways in which visitors engage with and respond to institutional space and content, this wide-ranging study of visitors' embodied experience of the museum is long overdue.

Book excerpt: Manchester in the mid-nineteenth century was a city of industry and commerce - wealthy, to be sure, but also polluted and over crowded, and certainly not a major cultural centre. A group of Mancunian businessmen was determined to change this. The result was the Art Treasures Exhibition of the United Kingdom of 1857, an exhibition of some 16,000 works borrowed mainly from private owners around the country and housed in a purpose-built 'art palace'. The show was a huge success, drawing 1.3 million visitors over a period of five months. To mark the 150th anniversary of the original exhibition, the story of this unprecedented expression of civic pride is told here. Illustrated with images of many of the original exhibits, as well as artists' impressions of the exhibition itself, it is the story of an event which exemplified the birth of modern attitudes towards art. This book is published in association with Manchester Art Gallery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating look at the creative power of institutions, Jonah Siegel explores the rise of the modern idea of the artist in the nineteenth century, a period that also witnessed the emergence of the museum and the professional critic. Treating these developments as interrelated, he analyzes both visual material and literary texts to portray a culture in which art came to be thought of in powerful new ways. Ultimately, Siegel shows that artistic controversies commonly associated with the self-consciously radical movements of modernism and postmodernism have their roots in a dynamic era unfairly characterized as staid, self-satisfied, and stable. The nineteenth century has been called the Age of the Museum, and yet critics, art theorists, and poets during this period grappled with the question of whether the proliferation of museums might lead to the death of Art itself. Did the assembly and display of works of art help the viewer to understand them or did it numb the senses? How was the contemporary artist to respond to the vast storehouses of art from disparate nations and periods that came to proliferate in this era? Siegel presents a lively discussion of the shock experienced by neoclassical artists troubled by remains of antiquity that were trivial or even obscene, as well as the anxious aesthetic reveries of nineteenth-century art lovers overwhelmed by the quantity of objects quickly crowding museums and exhibition halls. In so doing, he illuminates the fruitful crises provoked when the longing for admired art is suddenly satisfied. Drawing upon neoclassical art and theory, biographies of early nineteenth-century writers including Keats and Scott, and the writings of art critics such as Hazlitt, Ruskin, and Wilde, this book reproduces a cultural matrix that brings to life the artistic passions and anxieties of an entire era.

Book excerpt: The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.
