Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bilingual anthology brings together a collection of Spanish entremeses, the comic interludes that were performed between the acts of a comedia. Penned by authors such as Lope de Rueda, Cervantes, Calderón, Quevedo, and Quiñones de Benavente, many of these plays appear here for the first time in English. Translated for performability, these plays create a panoramic view of one-act plays from Spain’s classical theater period. Presented with discussions of dramaturgical and performance possibilities and difficulties, including relevant historical, cultural, and social information for the plays, the collection opens with two precursors to the entremés, moves through the breadth of the entremés form, and concludes with works from the 18th century, including a sainete. There are also examples of trans-adaptation that show how these works can be interpreted through strong directorial concepts that relocate the plays in historical time and location. The selected titles raise challenges to social mores and expectations, surprise with their humor, and delight with their stagecraft. Whether aimed at the classroom or the stage, the collection is valuable for research, pedagogy, and performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SPEAK SOME SPANISH is ideal for an informal class or for self-study. It provides a solid grammatical foundation within a useful context, extensive vocabulary, much presented in a unique way, and avenues for developing communication skills. While grammar is explained throughout, the book is designed around communication needs, language usage, useful topics, such as greetings, coping in a conversation, weather, telling time, directions, descriptions, and ways to speak of past, present, and future actions. Verbs, often a source of dismay for language learners, are presented in a unique way. Their mastery is made much simpler; no longer is there the challenge or tedium of memorizing conjugations. Following the regular chapters are nine EXTRA sections covering verb charts for and additional uses of the present subjunctive as well as other important verb forms, tenses, and their uses that are not covered in the chapters: commands; the two simple past tenses - the imperfect (indicative) and the preterite - their forms, their uses, and their use together; and the future (indicative.) These sections are for reference for anyone wishing to expand the SOME of the book title, SPEAK SOME SPANISH. The book concludes with present indicative verb charts and vocabularies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alurista. Gary Soto. Bernice Zamora. José Montoya. These names, luminous to some, remain unknown to those who have not yet discovered the rich variety of late twentieth century Chicano poetry. With the flowering of the Chicano Movement in the mid-1960s came not only increased political awareness for many Mexican Americans but also a body of fine creative writing. Now the major voices of Chicano literature have begun to reach the wider audience they deserve. Bruce-Novoa's Chicano Poetry: A Response to Chaos—the first booklength critical study of Chicano poetry—examines the most significant works of a body of literature that has grown dramatically in size and importance in less than two decades. Here are insightful new readings of the major writings of Abelardo Delgado, Sergio Elizondo, Rodolfo Gonzales, Miguel Méndez, J. L. Navarro, Raúl Salinas, Ricardo Sánchez, and Tino Villanueva, as well as Alurista, Soto, Zamora, and Montoya. Close textual analyses of such important works as I Am Joaquín, Restless Serpents, and Floricanto en Aztlán enrich and deepen our understanding of their imagery, themes, structure, and meaning. Bruce-Novoa argues that Chicano poetry responds to the threat of loss, whether of hero, barrio, family, or tradition. Thus José Montoya elegizes a dead Pachuco in "El Louie," and Raúl Salinas laments the disappearance of a barrio in "A Trip through the Mind Jail." But this elegy at the heart of Chicano poetry is both lament and celebration, for it expresses the group's continuing vitality and strength. Common to twentieth-century poetry is the preoccupation with time, death, and alienation, and the work of Chicano poets—sometimes seen as outside the traditions of world literature—shares these concerns. Bruce-Novoa brilliantly defines both the unique and the universal in Chicano poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Looking for Mexico, a leading historian of visual culture, John Mraz, provides a panoramic view of Mexico’s modern visual culture from the U.S. invasion of 1847 to the present. Along the way, he illuminates the powerful role of photographs, films, illustrated magazines, and image-filled history books in the construction of national identity, showing how Mexicans have both made themselves and been made with the webs of significance spun by modern media. Central to Mraz’s book is photography, which was distributed widely throughout Mexico in the form of cartes-de-visite, postcards, and illustrated magazines. Mraz analyzes the work of a broad range of photographers, including Guillermo Kahlo, Winfield Scott, Hugo Brehme, Agustín Víctor Casasola, Tina Modotti, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Héctor García, Pedro Meyer, and the New Photojournalists. He also examines representations of Mexico’s past in the country’s influential picture histories: popular, large-format, multivolume series replete with thousands of photographs and an assortment of texts. Turning to film, Mraz compares portrayals of the Mexican Revolution by Fernando de Fuentes to the later movies of Emilio Fernández and Gabriel Figueroa. He considers major stars of Golden Age cinema as gender archetypes for mexicanidad, juxtaposing the charros (hacienda cowboys) embodied by Pedro Infante, Pedro Armendáriz, and Jorge Negrete with the effacing women: the mother, Indian, and shrew as played by Sara García, Dolores del Río, and María Félix. Mraz also analyzes the leading comedians of the Mexican screen, representations of the 1968 student revolt, and depictions of Frida Kahlo in films made by Paul Leduc and Julie Taymor. Filled with more than fifty illustrations, Looking for Mexico is an exuberant plunge into Mexico’s national identity, its visual culture, and the connections between the two.

Book excerpt: When times are hard, motivation plays an important role. Through encouraging words, motivation can reveal its effects. Realism contains twenty spoken words that are based on real life theories. These spoken words paint the picture of life at a different angle. Nowadays, human beings are losing hope in this subject we call life. Instead of valuing its meanings we value its complications which then cause us to be complicated. Life is hard is what you hear from most people. Life is beautiful is what you hear from a few that actually take the time to value lifes meanings. Yes, life is hard and complicated, however, we need to try and understand it by observing the things in it especially us human beings. Realism is for those that want to be encouraged and view life at a different angle. As a bonus, four more spoken words are added: two in Creole and two in Spanish. Thats a total of twenty-four spoken words. Whether youre at home, work, school, or church, be entertained while gaining knowledge of the world that we are living in. Enjoy.
