Book excerpt: Why is the government deliberately destroying all trace of Man's past? Why are the laws of gravity and momentum strangely altered? Why has the world's population continually increased without the predicted eco-crisis taking place? Why is there an international conspiracy to conceal the future of the human race? These are just some of the reality-shattering questions that face Manalone, a brilliant computer scientist, when he tries to find out exactly what has happened to humanity. Manalone, outcast from society, must fight the entire machinery of a ruthless police state to discover the truth. And the truth is an awful, chilling one, that sounds only too real in today's world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man Alone with the Lake deftly explores the intriguing paradox of attaining one’s dreams. Often, we believe that achieving our goals, reaching our chosen destiny, and fulfilling our life’s purpose will paint our lives with an unmatched hue of perfection. We believe that everything will effortlessly align, providing a sense of profound contentment. But what happens when you crest the summit of your ambitions, only to discover that the victory tastes just as mundane as any other day? What happens when the satisfaction you envisaged is strikingly absent? Does this suggest that the goal was never truly yours? Our tale orbits around a 22-year-old football prodigy, who soars to remarkable heights in his nascent career. With each milestone he conquers, every facet of his life seems to fall into seamless harmony, echoing the vision he’d always dreamed of—everything, that is, except his mental well-being. It is only upon reckoning with a life-altering incident that he reevaluates his triumphant journey. The revelation strikes like a bolt of lightning: his long-chased dream was never truly his. He yearns not for the life he has meticulously constructed but for a solace found far from the madding crowd, in the serene solitude of being utterly alone.

This was the exact time that Danilo Perrotti Machado took to travel around the planet on a bicycle. Seeking to get to know the world and himself, Danilo left his hometown, Belo Horizonte, and went on a journey through 59 countries, covering 50,000 kilometers across Planet Earth. This exciting adventure is called “Free Man”. His goal was to get to know the peoples and cultures of the world, moved by his own physical effort, discovering at the same time the simple essence of being alive. The trip starts in Brazil followed by Europe, crossing the Middle East and a stretch of North Africa, traversing Asia and its appealing cultural diversity, then he goes to Oceania, descending the Americas and, finally, with a lot of pedaling, he arrives in the Amazon, with a surprising jump in the river that takes him back to Brazil. Free Man talks about what can happen when you realize that it is your own mind that dictates the circumstances you live in, with many accurate remarks about your existence, the way of life of rich and poor countries, the awakening of a man with the sun, moon and stars, most often alone, facing imminent death, danger and difficulty in communicating with foreign languages. A story that makes the reader find the pleasure of traveling very far on a bike, in an adventure that ends and starts after each page, taking him to travel within himself, with an intertwining that only great narratives possesses. It will certainly thrill anyone willing to embark on an immersive journey through Planet Earth and, at the same time, the human soul.

Book excerpt: “This is the book of the generation of heaven and earth ,” saith the Scripture, when all that is seen was finished, and each of the things that are betook itself to its own separate place, when the body of heaven compassed all things round, and those bodies which are heavy and of downward tendency, the earth and the water, holding each other in, took the middle place of the universe; while, as a sort of bond and stability for the things that were made, the Divine power and skill was implanted in the growth of things, guiding all things with the reins of a double operation (for it was by rest and motion that it devised the genesis of the things that were not, and the continuance of the things that are), driving around, about the heavy and changeless element contributed by the creation that does not move, as about some fixed path, the exceedingly rapid motion of the sphere, like a wheel, and preserving the indissolubility of both by their mutual action, as the circling substance by its rapid motion compresses the compact body of the earth round about, while that which is firm and unyielding, by reason of its unchanging fixedness, continually augments the whirling motion of those things which revolve round it, and intensity is produced in equal measure in each of the natures which thus differ in their operation, in the stationary nature, I mean, and in the mobile revolution; for neither is the earth shifted from its own base, nor does the heaven ever relax in its vehemence, or slacken its motion.

Book excerpt: Man Alone is one of the foundation stones of New Zealand literature. Almost all copies of the first edition, published in England in 1939, were destroyed in the Blitz. When it was republished in New Zealand in 1949, after the author's suicide in Cairo in 1945, the publisher Paul's Book Arcade made a number of changes for unknown reasons. This edition restores John Mulgan's original text for the first time.Johnson, an English WWI veteran, comes to New Zealand to find a new life. In Auckland he is caught up in the Great Depression riots, and heads south to the central North Island, where he work as a farm hand. An affair with his boss's wife and the accidental killing of his boss cause him to flee across rough hill country, and by the end of the novel he is contemplating leaving the country to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Man Alone is a portrait of an existential loner, and a testament to the necessity of comradeship in times of hardship.Cover: Selwyn & Blount dustjacket, 1939 (private collection)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare is a novel by G. K. Chesterton. The book is sometimes referred to as a metaphysical thriller. In Edwardian era London, Gabriel Syme is recruited at Scotland Yard to a secret anti-anarchist police corps. Lucian Gregory, an anarchistic poet, lives in the suburb of Saffron Park. Syme meets him at a party and they debate the meaning of poetry. Gregory argues revolt is the basis of poetry. Syme demurs, insisting the essence of poetry is not revolution, but rather law. He antagonizes Gregory by asserting the most poetical of human creations is the timetable for the London Underground. He suggests Gregory isn't really serious about his anarchism. This so irritates Gregory that he takes Syme to an underground anarchist meeting place, revealing his public endorsement of anarchy is a ruse to make him seem harmless, when in fact he is an influential member of the local chapter of the European anarchist council. The central council consists of seven men, each using the name of a day of the week as a code name, and the position of Thursday is about to be elected by Gregory's local chapter. Gregory expects to win the election, but just before the election Syme reveals to Gregory after an oath of secrecy that he is a secret policeman. Fearful Syme may use his speech in evidence of a prosecution, Gregory's weakened words fail to convince the local chapter he is sufficiently dangerous for the job. Syme makes a rousing anarchist speech and wins the vote. He is sent immediately as the chapter's delegate to the central council. In his efforts to thwart the council's intentions, however, Syme discovers five of the other six members are also undercover detectives; each was employed just as mysteriously and assigned to defeat the Council. They all soon find out they were fighting each other and not real anarchists; such was the mastermind plan of their president Sunday. In a surreal conclusion, Sunday himself is unmasked as only seeming to be terrible; in fact, he is a force of good like the detectives. However, he is unable to give an answer to the question of why he caused so much trouble and pain for the detectives. Gregory, the only real anarchist, seems to challenge the good council. His accusation is they, as rulers, have never suffered like Gregory and their other subjects, and so their power is illegitimate. However, Syme is able to refute this accusation immediately because of the terrors inflicted by Sunday on the rest of the council.
