Book excerpt: First published in 1993, the purpose of this book is to identify and describe the most important factors that must be considered in making decisions about the optimal ways to provide access to information – in short, the best way to use the humans, the machines, and the intangible resources known as information, particularly at the organizational level. In recent years executives have begun to outsource computing and telecommunications functions, primarily to control costs. Traditional libraries and information centres have been disbanded in favour of service contracts or outright leasing of staff. Both the public and private sectors are examining their information service operations from the point of view of cost effectiveness. Decisions about owning versus leasing of information are being made daily. Decision-makers are finding that they must deal differently with funding and budgeting of information systems and libraries from their earlier practice. New paradigms for these service functions already exist. Not only have corporations and governments begun to contract out entire information service operations, but libraries themselves have begun to consider the costs, effectiveness, and implications of outsourcing some of their operations and services. This book provides a framework for decision-makers to view and review information services within their organizations. Entire units, components of libraries and information centres are defined and untangled so that the widest variety of organizations can analyse their own environments. Each chapter is accompanied by comments from a broad range of experts in the information field.

Book excerpt: This fourth edition of Jo Bryson's highly regarded Managing Information Services has been thoroughly revised with an emphasis on innovation. Operating in a digital era, libraries must innovate to survive and grow. This means librarians having radical ideas which challenge the status quo, shifting strategic directions to change the way services are managed, and developing new skills and knowledge. Challenges include developing new uses for floorspace, where shelving is being replaced by mobile networking, and new practices and procedures for managing new products such as e-books and self-service. Libraries can achieve long term sustainability by information managers having more creative responses and developing innovative thinking. Essential reading for information students, this text also serves as a comprehensive and detailed reference on the key management topics for information service managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic globalization is transforming practically every service sector. The legal industry that has long remained insulated too has not remained untouched by the effects of globalization. The outsourcing of legal services in the past one decade has transformed the legal landscape. Legal outsourcing to India is becoming increasingly popular among U.S. and European law firms and corporations. This book broadly seeks to discuss three main topics surrounding legal process outsourcing (LPO): its emerging trends, the legal challenges it raises and the hitherto unrecognized potential it holds. Firstly, this book clarifies concepts of LPO and its operating models practiced by U.S. and U.K. law firms and corporations. Secondly, the outsourcing of legal services creates significant challenges for ethics rules including conflict of interests, attorney-client privilege, supervision and fee sharing. Thirdly, this research explores the hidden potential of LPO to improve access to justice. This book develops an altogether new proposal where Indian LPO professionals could help alleviate the access to justice problem among indigent and low-income populations of the United States.

Book excerpt: "Outsourcing Library Technical Services Operations: Practices in Academic, Public, and Special Libraries gives librarians the chance to "sample" the outsourcing practices of other libraries before making a commitment or a costly mistake." "Outsourcing initially seems attractive to library decision makers, but at the same time they must be wary of its impact on in-house staff, productivity, and quality. Librarians need to be able to answer a number of questions about outsourcing before signing a contract: Is outsourcing the most cost-effective alternative?; What are the in-house implications of outsourcing?; Will outsourcing actually free up staff to provide better services to patron?" "Experts from academic, public, and special libraries with a wealth of experience in outsourcing different technical services activities provide their views in this book. Each experience is examined from the perspective of its original objectives, effectiveness, operational success, problems, and outcomes. An extensive bibliography provides additional resources on outsourcing." --Book Jacket.
