Book Synopsis From Coffee to Tea Cultivation in Ceylon, 1880-1900 by : Roland Wenzlhuemer
Download or read book From Coffee to Tea Cultivation in Ceylon, 1880-1900 written by Roland Wenzlhuemer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1880s a disastrous plant disease diminished the yields of the hitherto flourishing coffee plantation of Ceylon. Coincidentally, world market conditions for coffee were becoming increasingly unfavourable. The combination of these factors brought a swift end to coffee cultivation in the British crown colony and pushed the island into a severe economic crisis. When Ceylon re-emerged from this crisis only a decade later, its economy had been thoroughly transformed and now rested on the large-scale cultivation of tea. This book uses the unprecedented intensity and swiftness of this process to highlight the socioeconomic interconnections and dependencies in tropical export economies in the late nineteenth century and it shows how dramatically Ceylonese society was affected by the economic transformation.

Download or read book Advances in Tea Agronomy written by M. K. V. Carr and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tea is big business. After water, tea is believed to be the most widely consumed beverage in the world. And yet, as productivity increases, the real price of tea declines while labour costs continue to rise. Tea remains a labour intensive industry. With a distinguished career spanning over 50 years and rich experience in diverse crops, Mike Carr is eminently qualified to indulge in an intelligent discourse on tea agronomy. In addition to a comprehensive review of the principal tea growing regions worldwide in terms of structure, productivity and principal constraints, he has attempted to question and seeks to find the associated experimental evidence needed to support current and future crop management practices. The book will assist all those involved in the tea industry to become creative thinkers and to question accepted practices. International in content, it will appeal to practitioners and students from tea growing countries worldwide.

Many developing countries enforce seed regulations and other policies that obstruct private companies from operating and delivering new technology. The papers and discussions identified reforms to speed the flow of private seed technology to these countries, with a particular focus on reforms and their impacts in Bangladesh, India, Peru, and Turkey.
