Book excerpt: My book, Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis is intended to motivate principals, teachers, students, and all school stakeholders to achieve the highest level of success in safety in public schools in America. It is organized for principals, policer officers, parents, students, teachers, superintendents, school board members, and politicians to use as a tool to improve safety and eliminate the violent acts of the school shooter in public schools. The organization and framework of this book is based on a true story of a safe and secure schools director who supervised 74 campuses and 60,000 students for 11 years. I saw many facets of school safety and prevention methods prior to my assignment as safe and secure schools director. I speak from a knowledge base of 47 years of service in public schools. This book, Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis will recommend that we strictly enforce security and directions in every phase at the high school level and elementary level. Building a safe learning environment for our students is a top priority! Many challenges still exist and will continue to exist during this violent era in public education in America. We as parents, community leaders, educators, and first responders will face this dilemma together and develop a security system that will allow peace and harmony during time students are on campuses in our public schools. The purpose of this book is to share my views on keys to building an effective campus security system. As director of safe and secure schools for a large urban public school district for 11 years, I had the opportunity to research school security standards, attend safety staff development, seminars, observe "best practices" in surrounding school districts, develop, and implement a school district crisis management plan. We know as educators to put in place the best safety plan for our students and teachers. My book will summarize key components of building an effective campus security system. Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis is designed to raise the hope and dreams of all high school and elementary school students who need to believe that accepting a challenge to be the best is only possible when hard work is applied correctly and in a timely manner. This book will recommend that we strictly enforce security and directions in every phase of school safety. The average elementary and junior high reader will have the opportunity to read this book and understand the path of a safe and secure learning environment.

Book excerpt: Dr. Clarence Johnson, retired director of Safe and Secure Schools in Aldine Independent School District, has been a career educator for forty-seven years. In his book, Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis, he offers a plan to motivate principals, teachers, students, and all school stakeholders to achieve the highest level of success in safety in public schools in America. Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis is organized for principals, police officers, parents, students, teachers, superintendents, school board members, and politicians to use as a tool to improve safety and eliminate the violent acts of the potential school shooter in public schools. The foundation for developing and implementing safety practices is documented by Dr. Johnson, an educator with forty-seven years of experience in America's public schools who served the final eleven years as director of Safe and Secure Schools. Dr. Clarence Johnson utilized his experiences as an assistant principal for ten years and as a high school principal for fourteen years. He paints a picture of the guidelines that must be placed in a safe and secure school environment and addresses the specific safety features that must be in place for the 2019-2020 School Year. You can read and follow his guidelines in Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis. The organization and framework of Johnson's book, Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis, is based on a true story of a successful Safe and Secure Schools director who supervised seventy-four campuses and sixty thousand students for eleven years. Dr. Johnson witnessed many facets of school safety and prevention methods prior to his assignment as a Safe and Secure Schools director. He speaks from a knowledge based on thirty-six years of service: a teacher of junior high school mathematics for ten years, a high school counselor for two years, a secondary assistant principal for ten years, a junior college site supervisor for four years, and a high school principal for fourteen years. Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis will recommend that we strictly enforce security and directions in every phase at the high school level and elementary level. Building a safe learning environment for our students is a top priority! Many challenges still exist and will continue to exist during this violent era in public education in America. Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis will address how to meet these challenges! We, as parents, community leaders, educators, and first responders, will face this dilemma together and develop a security system that will allow peace and harmony during the time students are on campuses in our public schools. Listen to the voice of Dr. Clarence Johnson as his guidelines and specific targets speak loudly and succinctly to address school security in his book, Managing Critical Seconds Before a School Crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position and role of the business school and its educational programmes have become increasingly prominent, yet also questioned and contested. What management education entails, and how it is enacted, has become a matter of profound concern in the field of higher education and, more generally, for the development of the organized world. Drawing upon the humanities and social sciences, The Routledge Companion to Reinventing Management Education imagines a different and better education offered to students of management, entrepreneurship and organization studies. It is an intervention into the debates on what is taught and how learning takes place, demonstrating both the potential and the limits of what the humanities and social sciences can do for management education. Divided into six sections, the book traces the history and theory of management education, reimagining central educational principles and outlining an emerging practice-based approach. With an international cast of authors, The Routledge Companion to Reinventing Management Education has been written for contemporary and future educators and for students and scholars who seek to make a difference through their practice.

This is the only book written specifically to provide school librarians with emergency preparedness and recovery tools as well as curricular tie-ins. No school is immune to disaster, whether in the form of a natural event like a tornado or a tragedy like the violence that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The key to minimizing injury or death in an emergency is preparedness—something the school librarian is uniquely positioned to lead. This must-have book will show you how to be proactive in getting your school ready for the worst. It provides comprehensive preparedness and recovery plans, check lists, and curricular recommendations on preparedness that can be tailored to your individual library and community. Covering natural disasters, human-made disasters, and school violence, the book shows you how to conduct drills, assess vulnerabilities and risk, communicate preparedness plans, and use bibliotherapy for disaster recovery. It also describes how your library can be a safe haven for students who feel disconnected, bullied, or otherwise disenfranchised. Although the book is primarily intended for school librarians, classroom teachers will also find many ideas here for helping students be better prepared for disasters, whatever their cause or severity.

Foundations of Homeland Security and Emergency Management includes information on: WMD, now expanded to include Pandemic Laws Political extremism, domestic threats, Posse Comitatus Act, and Insurrection Act Space Law, comparative Drone Law with Japan, HSEM in Puerto Rico Homeland Security Legal Architecture before 9/11 Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues in Homeland Security Critical Infrastructure Protection, Resiliency, and Culture of Preparedness With its accessible format, plethora of primary source documentation, and comprehensive coverage of the subject, this book is an essential resource for professionals and advanced students in law enforcement, national and homeland security, emergency management, intelligence, and critical infrastructure protection.

Book excerpt: Psychological Crisis Intervention: The SAFER-R Model is designed to provide the reader with a simple set of guidelines for the provision of psychological first aid (PFA). The model of psychological first aid (PFA) for individuals presented in this volume is the SAFER-R model developed by the authors. Arguably it is the most widely used tactical model of crisis intervention in the world with roughly 1 million individuals trained in its operational and derivative guidelines. This model of PFA is not a therapy model nor a substitute for therapy. Rather it is designed to help crisis interventionists stabile and mitigate acute crisis reactions in individuals, as opposed to groups. Guidelines for triage and referrals are also provided. Before plunging into the step-by-step guidelines, a brief history and terminological framework is provided. Lastly, recommendations for addressing specific psychological challenges (suicidal ideation, resistance to seeking professional psychological support, and depression) are provided.
